Robert Kruse memories..I first met Bob at one of our swap meets (probably in 1981), we were the young guys at the time and had newer Oldsmobiles, like ones from the late 60s and early 70s. Bob helped me and countless other members getting Olds parts from the GM dealerships where he worked as a parts manager. In the early 80s, there were not many options to get parts as Year One, OPGI, The Parts Place, Thornton’s, and even Fusick hadn’t started making reproduction parts for 64-72 GM A body cars yet. Bob did dealer to dealer searches. I got parts from all over the US and Canada but even so there were still some voids, like interior parts at the time. Fortu-nately, the repro parts finally came around and started making stuff for “newer” Oldsmobiles. I can’t thank Bob enough for all he did to help me restore my ‘69 HO.Jeff

Bob published the first club roster in 1982 and took the option to put his car on the cover.Jeff Stanish has a copy of this and what is interesting it list all cars owned by each member. e.g. John Doe: 1957 Plymouth. 1962 Chevro-let, 1964 Oldsmobile 98

Ask Your Zone Director By Jon Manji

At our Nor-Cal January Membership Meeting, ways to verify OCA membership start dates and terms were discussed. Coincidentally, more information regarding ways to verify one’s OCA membership term can be found in the March issue of Journey With Olds. The Chair of OCA’s Long-Term Membership Program, Cindy Klemm, wrote a two-page article outlining the Pro-gram and ways to verify your OCA membership start date.

Also, a reminder that, due to the earlier (June 25-30) National Meet dates this year, the Meet registration deadlines occur earlier, too. Mailed registration forms must be postmarked by May 18th, and May 25th is the last day for online registration.

Founding mem-ber BOB KRUSE passed away Febru-ary 25th, of massive heart attack.

Oldsmobiles at Recent Southern California Car EventsBy Jon Manji

In November of last year, I made a long weekend of three car events in Southern California over the Veterans’ Day weekend. The Fall weather is usually a bit warmer and less foggy than in the Sacramento Valley where I live, so a trip to the Southland is a pretty easy sell for me when the weather gets cool.

The first car event that I attended was the Orphans Car Show at the Automobile Driving Museum (ADM) in El Segundo (next to Los Angeles International Airport.) The ADM is a medium-sized museum that offers rides on Sundays to museum attendees in a variety of its

130+ cars. ADM also hosts several themed shows each year. One of those shows is the Or-phans Car Show, which is open to all makes that are now out of production. The Olds Club of Southern California has had a club display at the show for the past few years. While the show is relatively small, with about 50 cars, there are dozens of additional Museum cars on display inside. All told, there’s a great general mix here in the Museum’s collection, full classics and newer vintages, import and domestic makes. While the Museum doesn’t have any Oldsmo-biles, the Olds Club of Southern California made up for that with a prominent display that included several of its members’ cars.

On the second day of my visit, I went to the Long Beach High-Performance Swap Meet at Veterans’ Stadium in Long Beach. Don’t let the name fool you, this swap meet has a wide variety of parts, services, and cars for sale. Parking is free, and the admission isn’t too bad at $10. The parking lot has a pretty good impromptu car show, along with many cars (including a few Oldsmobiles) with For Sale signs. The Olds Club of Southern California regularly has a booth display at this meet, which is held about monthly around the year. I have attended this meet several times over the last twenty years, and what I like about this one is the relatively high number of sellers that are simply there to get rid of garage clutter and don’t want to take things back home with them. So a lot of stuff is priced to sell, and bargains can be had.

Now at the Long Beach Swap.An in progress ~’72 Toro and a row of air cooled VWsbelow.

I planned a visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles for the last day of my trip. Although I had visited the Museum several times in the past, I had not been there since it underwent a major remodel in 2015. There is now a full restaurant (somewhat pricey, but very good service) and bar within the Museum, plus more static displays on automo-tive history. The rotating exhibit areas seem about the same size as before. I had pre-registered online for a tour of The Vault, a vehicle storage area under the Museum with about 250 cars that is normally closed to the public. The tours are led by a Museum docent, and are either 90 or 120 minutes long. Unfortunately, no cameras are allowed on the tours, so I don’t have any pic-tures. There are a few pictures of The Vault on the Museum’s website. Our group had a great docent, and the tour was the best two-hour history of the automobile that I have ever experienced. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone interested in automotive history, newcomer or old-timer alike.

If your travels take you to the Southland, I’d recommend any of the events that I visited. Or you may find a time when there may be enough auto-related shows and swap meets gathered together date-wise to make a long weekend out of it, like there was for me. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about our favorite hobby.

Dominic Spinetta set up a garage tour for our Olds Club with his friend Al Engel in Richmond.Members John Smith, Dave Lipsky, Bob Griffith, Jeff Stanish, Larry Ewing with brother Tom and of course, Dominic all showed up at 10AM and Al had coffee and donuts ready for us. One of the best collections I have ever seen. Where else will you see 5 early Olds Rocket Engine powered cars, 3 in early Fords and 2 in 50s Oldsmobiles. He had 4 garages to see, one with mostly cars of the 30’s and 40’s, an all boat building, a garage with mostly foreign cars and a motorcycle garage along with small cars and even a bumper car from Playland at the beach. Way too much to list but really a sight to see. Thanks to Dominic for setting the tour up!Below is a summary from brother Tom, enjoy. LEE

I went with Larry March 23rd to view a private car collection along with others in the Olds Club. What a collection! The owner is Al Engel, a 76 year old guy that loves cars, boats, motorcycles and other memorabilia and has the means to indulge. A very nice guy that has a story for each item in the collection and is happy to share. He made his money in the ship repair business- his Dad was the contractor that ran Hunter’s Point Shipyard for a time and he essentially took over for his Dad when the contract was way more complex than old school Dad could deal with. They also ran the same business at other locations and are now engaged in real estate.

He has wide ranging tastes as you will see in his collection of over 100 cars. The engine col-lection is mind boggling. A sohc Ford, a built GMC 6, two offys- one carbureted, the other fuel injected. The other oddity to me is the Ardun V8-60- never knew about those. Lots of flathead intake manifolds- at least 100. Al is standing behind the V8-60 which is just in front of a double ohc V8 tank engine also made by Ford- Ford’s largest and smallest V8s. The Bantams shown are two of six in the collection. Three Studebaker Coupe Express trucks, lots of midget race cars, a replica of a 1961 Indy winner driven by AJ Foyt, a whole line of 32 Fords- the green one shown is powered by 371 inches of Olds, the red roadster built by Brizio has Chrysler touches- grill, engine tail lights, hub caps, steering wheel. The 54 Olds and 55 Chevrolet are both factory sticks. The black 40 Ford Standard is a magazine feature car of years past- 331 Cadillac powered. Also 50 Olds 88 coupe with a 394. Now on to

another building- with boats! The crackerbox is early Corvette powered- direct drive. The long boat with surrey was built in 1913. 3rd bldg, A Porsche 2-cylinder diesel tractor and a 1940 (?) Triumph roadster and a bunch of motorcycles. Last bldg has 57 Ranchero front and center. The 40 LaSalle coupe has 18,000 original miles! last car is a mild custom 36 Ford 5-window coupe- flathead power, of course.

Amazing collection! Enjoy, Tom

I have loved Oldsmobiles since I learned to drive. As a teenager I had four Oldsmo-biles. There were two 1950 Holiday hardtops, a 1950 convertible and a 1956 two door hardtop. I built the 1956 that I currently own because I had the same car as a teenager. At the age of twenty-one I attended the General Motors training center in San Leandro for six weeks specifically for the Oldsmobile division. I started work as a mechanic for Foulks Motors in Sacramento after I completed training. A few years after that I was offered a position with Mobil Oil Corporation in marketing. I stayed with Mobil for fifteen years. I then started my own business in 1982. I have had it ever since. I do towing for AAA in the Stockton area and I also do restoration, mostly on my own cars. I have several complete restorations as well as several in progress. I also own a 1973 Oldsmobile which I bought new in 1973. It has over 500,000 miles on it. It was my company car when I worked for Mobil.

My 1956 Olds is a rotisserie build. It is highly modified with 600 horse-power and 635 ft lbs of torque. I started building the car in 2005 and I worked on it off and on for about 10 years. All the work was done in my shop. The machine work on the engine was done by Dick Miller Racing. It falls into the restomod category. It was a labor of love and I enjoy the car very much. The car did well at the 2019 Sacra-mento Autorama. It received best in class and one of the best displays. It is the most competitive class at the show. They gave five awards and the Olds placed first over all the Fords

and Chevys.

Information Wanted: I used to own a two-tone 1961 Dynamic 88 2-doorhardtop. The last two digits of the VIN are 91. I sold it in the Bay Area in the 1980s. I would like to find out if this car still exists and what happened to it after I sold it.
