life we all have many desires and at Kappes Simmentals we concentrate on the “Holistic Approach”when focusing on personal and business goals. Our breeding program has concentrated very heavily on

convenience traits for our commercial and seedstock customers. Our focus has been to produce cattlethat excel in the following areas: solid color pattern, polled gene, calving ease, low birth weights, performance,maternal, carcass quality, structurally correct and phenotype. Our breeding program ranks in the top of thebreed when talking about calving ease and low birth weights. Our genetics have been designed to provideprofit for all segments of the industry, not just one.

This year’s offering provides several genetic packages to help you meet your breeding goals. We have increasedour bull offering from our previous sales to provide you with a broader selection of future herd sires. This year’sbull offering will include the following: red and black Simmental bulls, SimmAngus bulls and Angus bulls.

Each year we sort through thousands of pedigrees to select our future herd sires. This is done with muchpatience and is directed by our customers breeding goals. Our selection process is designed to continue tocompliment our base genetics in our cowherd. Our banker doesn’t always agree with us on how much we payfor herd sires, but we feel that in order to move forward genetically it only can be accomplished with superiorgenes. Our commitment to buy the best is evident in the success of our herd bulls; very little semen is used fromoutside sources. The majority of semen used in our A.I. and embryotransplant comes from the sires that walk our pastures or we haveraised. Our most recent acquisition includes the pick of theGrand Champion Pen of 3 at the 2002 National WesternStock Show, Daume Lucky Deal L101. If he breeds theway he looks, his calves will be awesome. The highselling bull at Gateway Simmentals, GW Twenty-Four Seven, he was a standout in his class in termsof calving ease, birth weight, performance,phenotype and carcass quality. 24-7 is a son ofthe leading carcass sire Lucky Strike. He is solidblack and does not have a white hair on him.Home-raised future stars include Duramax,Collateral and Direct Force.

Once again, Flittie Simmentals will join us for this event.Their cattle philosophy is very similar to ours. Theirconsignments included bred and open donor femaleprospects.

Complete ultrasound carcass and scrotalcircumference data will be available the end ofJanuary. Plan to attend February 15th, 2003 and moveyour cowherd towards value based marketing by using our “Holistic Approach” genetics.

Tom, Jay and Delbert Gunther of Fredrick, SD run a 400 head cow calf operation. As anysuccessful commercial producer knows, a live calf, vigor and performance is the name of thegame. Gunther’s bull battery currently consists of 95% Kappes’ Black Simmental bulls.

Jay Gunther stated, “Our first crop from Kappes’ Black Simmental truly impressed us. Thecalves were born unassisted and had excellent vigor. The first year we had black Simmentalcalves born we also had Charolais calves. The black calves were the first to get up and nurse andif we have to get a calf in the barn, it was always a white calf. With bulls from Kappes’ BlackSimmental, our work load at calving has been greatly reduced and yet we have maintained ourweaning weights.”

Zantow’s bull battery consists of 100% Kappes Simmental genetics...

The Zantows’ run a cow calf operation in excess of 400 brood cows. Their program includes an Amerifaxfoundation that has concentrated on raising low input commercial cattle. They have purchased their herdbulls from Kappes’ since 1998. Their bull battery currently consists of 100% Kappes genetics.

Trevor stated, “Our 2002 born calves were the best and most uniform set of calves we’ve ever raised. Wedon’t start calving until the first of April and when we sold our calves in October, 92 head of steersweighed 611 pounds. Our cattle don’t get pampered, no special treatment, they are expected to do it ontheir own. We don’t creep feed any of our calves.”

“Each year the yearling bulls we purchase breed our heifers. Our heifers have calved virtually unassistedwith Kappes’ genetics. The vigor of the Simmental calves is superior.”
