In this session, we will learn how to live in the moment and to appreciate the smaller wonders life has to offer us. We’ll have a relaxing morning, learning new techniques we can personally use in our daily lives such as Deep Breathing for relaxation, Basic Yoga, Visualization and adult colouring/collaging. If weather permits, we will go for a nature walk to test our senses. Come prepared in comfy clothes and an open mind. Canadian Improv Games – Improv Theme Event Focus (am session) Instructor: Megan Turnley Location: TBA In Improv, stories and characters are created collaboratively and spontaneously on the spot. Improv is a great way to engage with new people, increase confidence, and test your own limits. There are no mistakes – only happy accidents. Information will also be provided about Improv shows in Winnipeg and how to get involved with the Improv community.

Reading with Grade 5 Students (fullday session) Instructor: Mark Reimer Location: Stonybrook Middle School A reading partnership has been struck with Stonybrook’s grade five ELA classes. We will spend the day at Stonybrook collaborating with young kids and supporting their reading practices. There will (most likely) be a common reading time where a story is read to the class, and then we will pair up with the students to read with them – model reading, listen to them read, sort out some comprehension activities with them and some response to the stories activities with them. What is Comedy? (half day morning only session) Instructor: Andrew Unger Location: J5 What makes us laugh and why? We'll explore different styles of comedy using examples from a variety of films and television shows. You'll be texting LOL to all your friends and after this session, you'll know why. Manitoba in Popular Culture (halfday afternoon only session) Instructor: Andrew Unger Location: J5 Manitoba only has about a million people, but we've sure created a lot of great rock bands, artists, authors and film makers. Homer Simpson even visited Winnipeg. In this half day session we'll look at how our province has been depicted in movies, music and other popular culture. From Neil Young and The Guess Who, to The Office and the

Simpsons we'll look at what other people are saying about us, and what we're saying about ourselves. Lasers and Cool Spaceships: what is the purpose of (good) science fiction? (fullday session) Instructor: Darren Grunerud Location: Room 194 Spoiler alert: the lasers and cool spaceships are not the point… but they are certainly a nice addon. In this fullday seminar, we will consider some of the questions posed by some of the best science fiction of the last 100 years. We will look at some of the predictions that science fiction (in novels as well as films) has made for the future, even when the future that they predicted is now our past. Readings and video clips from many classics works of the genre will be viewed and discussed. Comic and Graphic Novel Appreciation and Workshop (halfday am session) Instructor: Neal Rohne Location: 210 The first part of this session will examine the art of comics and graphic novels. Including an examination of the basic elements of graphic novels and how to read them, we will address the concepts of closure and the passage of time. Following this, students will have the opportunity to engage in a comic workshop that will encourage students to create their own comics while practicing skills like penciling, inking, lettering, and story writing. Students should bring markers, pencils, pencil crayons and any other supplies they think they will need in order to produce their own comics. Art in Context at the WAG (fullday session) Instructor: Brydon Caldwell Do you ever wonder about who you are or how you fit into the world? What’s the context in which you exist? To answer these questions, students will travel to the Winnipeg Art Gallery for a tour and workshop activity. After a guided tour of the facility, students will participate in the ‘Art in Context’ workshop. Taking inspiration from artists in the gallery, students will arrive in the studio to consider what their own context is.

Using a variety of art materials students will reflect on the time and place in which they live and how this makes them who they are. Students will meet in Room 190 to begin discussing their personal contexts before heading to the WAG for the day, returning around 3pm. Students will be required to bring a bag lunch and contribute about $12 (depending on enrollment) for the day. (Sign up for this activity will close on April 7th.) Teen Talk: Mental Health and Body Image (am only session) Instructor: Guest Speaker Location: TBA Mental Health: This workshop helps you to understand that mental health is a continuum that ranges from mental wellness to mental illness. An emphasis on recognizing symptoms of various mental illnesses and issues through stories is given. We address stigma associated with mental health as well as suicide; explore our feelings during a hard time, where to get support and resources, treatment options, as well as coping strategies in an interactive manner. Body Image: This workshop helps youth look at ways to prevent/deal with negative body image by examining harmful messages presented in the media and common attitudes and myths in society at large. We also explore the link between negative body image, unhealthy behaviors (such as disordered eating and overexercising, sexual risktaking, and low selfesteem) and depression. Teen Talk – Communication Skills and Appreciating Diversity (pm only session) Instructor: Guest Speaker Location: TBA Communication Skills: This workshop looks at effective communication skills with a focus on passive, aggressive, and assertive styles of communication in relationships. The harmful effects of rumors are also discussed as well as a look at how media and gender roles can influence the ways that we communicate. Emphasis is placed on issues of consent, sexual decisionmaking and negotiating safer sex. Appreciating Diversity: The purpose of this workshop is to discuss what diversity means in our society and how some differences are more accepted and approved of than others. By identifying the linkages existing between different forms of discrimination (sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.), we aim to facilitate discussion on how this negatively impacts the health of individuals and our society as a whole. Our aim is to provide ideas and strategies to build critical awareness and encourage positive change towards a more just society. Period 2: Writing Your Own Novel (Full day Session) Instructor: Brydon Caldwell Room 190 Writing Your Own Novel will give students the opportunity to develop their own thoughts and ideas and begin writing their own novel. While the thought of writing something so long can be daunting, we will break novel writing down into manageable chunks, looking at chapter structure and characters. Time will be given to plan, write, collaborate with other students, and revise work. Students should look forward to pushing themselves and their ideas to new limits. Prompts are always available but students can come in with their own ideas as well. Anyone participating in this session may use their writing towards Camp NaNoWriMo. Not Your Grandma’s Cross Stitch (am only session) Instructor: Jolene Fiarchuk Location: 211 Are you looking for a handson and creative way to express yourself? Have a book or film quote that speaks to you (or just a clever Instagram bio)? Cross stitch has been making a comeback lately with satirical images and quotes embroidered on everything from wall art to tshirts. In this halfday session you will design your pattern, learn the basics of crossstitch (beginners and haters of sewing are totally welcome), and leave with your unique piece of embroidered art. A $5 fee will take care of your supplies so all you need to do is show up. making a comeback lately with satirical images and quotes embroidered on everything from wall art to tshirts. In this halfday session you will design your pattern, learn the basics of crossstitch (beginners and haters of sewing are totally welcome), and leave with your unique piece of embroidered art. A $5 fee will take care of your supplies so all you need to do is show up. (half day morning session) Instructor: Andrew Unger Location: J5 What makes us laugh and why? We'll explore different styles of comedy using examples from a variety of films and television shows. You'll be texting LOL to all your friends and after this session, you'll know why. Manitoba in Popular Culture (halfday afternoon session) Instructor: Andrew Unger Location: J5 Manitoba only has about a million people, but we've sure created a lot of great rock bands, artists, authors and film makers. Homer Simpson even visited Winnipeg. In this half day session we'll look at how our province has been depicted in movies, music and other popular culture. From Neil Young and The Guess Who, to The Office and the Simpsons we'll look at what other people are saying about us, and what we're saying about ourselves. Lasers and Cool Spaceships: what is the purpose of (good) science fiction? (fullday session) Instructor: Darren Grunerud Location: 194 Spoiler alert: the lasers and cool spaceships are not the point… but they are certainly a nice addon. In this fullday seminar, we will consider some of the questions posed by some of the best science fiction of the last 100 years. We will look at some of the predictions that science fiction (in novels as well as films) has made for the future, even

when the future that they predicted is now our past. Readings and video clips from many classics works of the genre will be viewed and discussed.
