INTRODUCTION
Who we are
NHS Supply Chain provides customer-focused healthcare products and supply chain services to the UK's
National Health Service (NHS), enabling trusts, hospitals and other healthcare organisations to focus on
patient care.
Our aim is to provide more than £1 billion savings to the NHS over a ten year period so that resources
are released for NHS trusts and healthcare organisations to focus on quality frontline patient care,
manage costs and achieve sustainable value. We provide end-to-end supply chain services incorporating
procurement, logistics, e-commerce, and customer and supplier support. We manage the procurement
and delivery of 620,000 products for more than 600 healthcare organisations.
NHS Supply Chain is committed to supporting innovation in everything we do. We strive to do this by
working alongside clinicians to understand their demand for innovation, and matching demand with
availability from suppliers.
How do we Innovate?
Innovation is at the forefront of NHS Supply Chain’s procurement process. Through our innovation
programme we can ensure that ready for market innovations can be assessed as to their suitability and if
appropriate, we can offer a quicker route to supply via our route. This process also helps us to identify
new ways of anticipating product, procurement and logistics needs within the marketplace.
Our definition of innovation is the same as the one outlined in the Innovation Health and Wealth:
Accelerating Adoption and Diffusion in the NHS report published by the Department of Health on 5th
December 2011:
An idea, service or product, new to the NHS or applied in a way that is new to the NHS, which significantly
improves the quality of health and care wherever it is applied.”
How we can assist you to bring innovation to the market place?
We encourage you to tell us about new or innovative products once they are ready for market so that we
can evaluate them and if deemed innovative, make them available through our route. We now have a
formalised process to manage supplier innovation. Our Innovation Scorecard, which has been developed
with support from the NHS National Innovation Centre, offers the chance for a product's innovation level
to be assessed and considered for a contract. If you have applied via Innovation Scorecard and it is
deemed that you have an innovative product but it is not yet ready for market, we may forward your
details to one of a number of different external companies. The contacts we have may be able to aid
you in developing further, getting you to the marketable stage. At which point, you may reapply to us.

SCORECARD OVERVIEW
Summary
NHS Supply Chain Innovation Scorecard (http://scorecard.nic.nhs.uk/SSCLogin.aspx) has recently
undergone a refresh with a view to making it more user-friendly.
The Scorecard aims to provide a central point for suppliers wishing to progress their innovative products
into the NHS. It is designed for products beyond prototype stage and must have CE Marking in order to
be considered for further assessment, along with evidence of clinical trials and health economics. Once a
product has been submitted, NHS Supply Chain aims to have carried out an initial assessment within 30
working days, although it can be longer if not all information is submitted.
Once a decision has been reached, the innovator will be informed by email. Those suppliers that are
successful will then have their product put on a contract with NHS Supply Chain. Alternatively for existing
suppliers, if their product fits into a framework they are already named on, the innovation can be added
as a framework extension.
All successful submissions will then be passed to Marketing, who will advertise the innovation in the New
Product Showcase and the product will be flagged as innovative in the NHS Supply Chain catalogue.
Introduction
The new Innovation Scorecard consists of 16 Questions, which identify the Concept, Value and Capability
of a product.
A weighted percentage score is generated from these answers in each area, as well as an average for
your submission. The final Score does not guarantee further progression or submission into the NHS
Supply Chain Catalogue.
Product Submission Suitability
NHS Supply Chain can not progress with any product which has not gained CE Marking.
If a product is still in the realisation or prototype stage we recommend submitting via the National
Innovation Centre (NIC) Scorecard.
It is recommended that a supplier has carried out Clinical Trials (where applicable) and can provide
evidence of this on submission. NHS Supply Chain do not provide funding for Clinical Trials or carry out
trials on behalf of the supplier.
Deeper Due Diligence
Where a product is deemed innovative and suitable for NHS Supply Chain consideration, a submission
will be entered for Deeper Due Diligence, where we may refer the innovation for feedback from
clinicians or other experts.
Outcomes
If a product is successful through all stages of the innovation process, a Buyer from NHS Supply Chain will
begin discussions of developing a contract. The contract will adhere to the Terms & Conditions of NHS
Supply Chain. The uptake of an innovative product will be measured during this time. Suppliers will be
given support from the Marketing and Sales team through our New Product Showcase.

Top Tips
Make a note of your user name and password for future reference. We will not be able to
retrieve them and you will have to re-register.
Keep your answers brief and to the point, but please make sure you answer each question in its
entirety, (thus preventing delays while we seek further information). Include the key points which you
want to portray about your product.
You will be required to upload attachments as supporting evidence such as an image of your
innovation. This enables the Innovation Team to visualise the product and relate your answers to the
product.
Have any additional documents to hand which you would want to upload to support your
answers. The most common ones we require are:
• Pricing Structure
• CE Certification
• Health Economic benefits
• Evidence of clinical trials
If you want to prepare your answers, a copy of the questions can be obtained from the
Innovation Team. Email: [email protected]
Please note, if your innovation is not yet CE Marked, your innovation cannot be assessed via this
route. Please re-submit when CE marketing has been obtained.
Confidentiality Agreements – if you require a confidentiality agreement to be signed by NHS
Supply Chain, it would be reviewed by our Legal Team. If they have any concerns regarding the
document, it will not be signed, and we would have no alternative but to close your application. Please
note this will add delays to the timescales already outlined.
