“Open Source Software for Business” (OSS4B) is an international conference that promotes the usage and

the adoption of open source software in both business and mission critical environments.

The event features two days of talks and workshops by international speakers focused on open source

technologies and everything that ensures their successful adoption: hardware solutions, project management

and organisation methodologies and techniques, best practices, business models, research and development,

training, marketing, social media, licensing, etc.

OSS4B targets chief officers in areas such as finance, technology, information, data, marketing, risk/security, law,

network, web, mobile, etc. as well as developers, system, database and network administrators, project

managers.

OSS4B provides a platform for the supply of and demand for innovative ICT services of the highest quality based

on open source software.

The first edition of the “Open Source Software for Business” Conference, OSS4B 2013, will be held in Italy

(Prato, Tuscany) on 19-20 September 2013.

The 2013 edition will be focused on DevOps and Kanban. Confirmed keynote speakers are:

● Gene Kim, author of the best-seller “The Phoenix Project” and expert in IT operations, security and

compliance;

● Dragos Dumitriu, General Manager of David J. Anderson and Associates Inc, a global management

consulting firm providing Lean and Kanban solutions that improve performance, communication, and

collaboration for knowledge workers.

DRAGOS DUMITRIU

David J Anderson & Associates

General Manager of David J. Anderson and Associates, Inc, a global

management consulting firm providing Lean and Kanban solutions that

improve performance, communication, and collaboration for knowledge

workers.

Recipient of several awards for innovation, delivery, and leadership, Dragos

built a reputation for designing solutions that streamline IT operations,

enhance performance, and transform underachieving teams into top talent.

In 2004, while at Microsoft, he was recognized as the first IT manager who

successfully applied Kanban and the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to

software engineering creating immediate gains in profitability, performance,

and stakeholder value.

Dragos holds several training and consulting certifications including Lean-

Kanban University Accredited Kanban Trainer (AKT) and Kanban Coaching

Professional (KCP). He leads consulting engagements and conducts training

workshops on Kanban for IT/Operations and DevOps.

STEFANO ZACCHIROLI

Debian Developer, former 3 times Debian Project Leader

Debian Project Leader, between April 2010 and April 2013. Zacchiroli

became a Debian Developer in 2001. After attending LinuxTag in 2004, he

became more involved in the Debian community and the project itself.

Zacchiroli earned a PhD in computer science in 2007 at University of

Bologna and moved to Paris Diderot University for his Postdoctoral research.

He is involved in the MANCOOSI project working on the application of formal

methods to the solution of complexity issues in the management of

GNU/Linux distributions.

From the technical point of view, Zacchiroli has been involved in Debian

mainly in the OCaml packaging and in the quality assurance team.

In April 2011 he was re-elected as project leader unopposed. In April 2012

he was re-elected again, becoming the first-ever DPL to be elected three

times.

Vaj, located in the heart of Prato’s centro storico (historical centre).

OSS4B is organised by the same team behind the

very first PostgreSQL community events ever held in

Europe (now www.pgconf.eu and www.pgday.it).

Over 200 attendees from all over the world came to

Prato for the first edition of the PostgreSQL Day in

Europe, which took place in July 2007.

OSS4B brings this kind of conference to a higher

level, by embracing all open source technologies and

services (not just Postgres) at the core ICT

enterprises.

Competitions and outside the box ideas are welcome

OSS4B 2013, the first “Open Source Software for

Business” international conference is to be held in

Italy (Prato, Tuscany) on 19-20 September 2013.

The call for papers is now open.

Presenting in Italy for the first time, confirmed

keynote speakers are internationally renowned Gene

Kim (author of the best-seller “The Phoenix Project”)

and Dragos Dumitriu (pioneer in Lean and Kanban

solutions).

Speakers are being sought to share their knowledge

and experience on open source technologies and

everything that ensures their successful adoption.

The conference will not be limited to technical

aspects, rather abstracts which include broader

themes such as business, organisation,

management and education will be considered.

Here follows a non exhaustive list of suggested

topics:

● World class open source software technologies

such as operating systems, data management

systems, programming languages and

embedded systems;

● Open source tools for revision control,

continuous integration, ticketing and bug

tracking, testing and QA, build, automated

deployment, provisioning, configuration

management, monitoring, benchmarking;

● Case studies/caveats/success stories on adoption

Ownership (TCO).

If you have an interesting and relevant topic or

experience regarding open source software that has

not been mentioned above, but you believe it deserves

our attention, feel free to contact us or directly submit

a proposal.

Each session will be in English and last 1 hour,

including question time (prepare for a 45/50 minute

talk).

How to submit a paper

Submissions must be sent via e-mail to [email protected] and should specify:

● Full name

● E-mail address

● Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook URLs/accounts

● Title and abstract of the talk (~400/700 characters)

● Topic(s) covered

● Target audience, such as developers, system administrators, database administrators, network

administrators, project managers, chief officers in finance (CFO), technology (CTO), information (CIO),

data (CDO), marketing (CMO), risk/security (CRO), legal (CLO), network (CNO), web/mobile (CWO), ...

● Previous experience presenting at international conferences (preferably with links to slides and/or videos)

The submission deadline has been extended to August 5th (initially it was July 22nd) . Selected

speakers will be notified before August 12th, 2013.

Submissions in Italian will also be considered for a parallel track.

Selected speakers will be given full access to the conference. Travel and accommodation expenses will be

partially covered (alternatively, speakers will be offered sponsorship exchange opportunities). Speakers

requiring special assistance with funding must provide detailed information when submitting their requests.
