Scenic views enroute to St. Paddy’s Day bash at Joe’s!

In This Issue:

As March arrives in the northwest, we

can never be sure what the weather

will be, the economy will bring, or

what the latest fads will be… but we

can count on St. Patrick‟s Day and the

Faherty‟s.

Once again, Joe and Lynn Faherty put on a great

party at they home on Fox Island. The crowd ap-

peared to be around 20+ people, all appearing to

have Irish-Italian heritage as the party went along.

The food options were great including a wonderful

corned beef and cabbage soup. People sure didn‟t

seem to be going hungry or thirsty during the eve-

ning.

One fun part of the evening was the Irish band that

entertained us. Among the five musicians, and sing-

ers were our club members Steve Harrold and our

host, Joe Faherty. They played and sang numerous

Irish folk songs, including a few verses that were

sure to get them in trouble with their spouses.

Joe also provided a great driving route to the party

for anyone who wanted a nice wandering scenic

course. It started by taking the Bainbridge Island

ferry out of Seattle then following the east side of

the island on some tight roads, past some very nice

homes and views back across to the city. Next we crossed the Agate Pass bridge to the Kitsap Peninsula for a

stop in the town of Poulsbo. This town has numerous fun shops and restaurants well worth spending the day and

a little money.

From there, the path skirted the shoreline of Liberty Bay, wandering the twisty roads through Keyport, then

President’s Column By Harry Reed

Winter Will Just Not Let Go!

Every time I think it is time to take Aldo out for a top down drive, it snows, enough already.

We had a great meeting at APEX Automotive on Tuesday the 10th. There was a good turn-out with a lot of socializing. Jon Voss and Alan Peterson

took us through their LaCarrera Panamericana Race. They finished 26th overall with the fifth smallest budget. Their Volvo was not the best-looking

racer, but they did all the right things. They put their time, effort and money into safety and reliability. That is what racing is all about. It‟s not

which car looks the best, but which car performs the best over the entire race. There was a continuous audio of the race, quite exciting stuff. We all

thank APEX Automotive.

Our first Track event of the year, The Bremerton Novice School, was a huge success. We had a good mix of male, female, adults and teenagers. It

went excellently due to the really fine work of the Competition Committee and their helpers. There are not many places in the country where you

can attend a Novice Driving School and walk away knowing your skill level, and how you and your car will react to adverse conditions. Our Novice

School is a real Community Service event.

April 23 is our first lapping day at Pacific Raceways. We are expecting a full complement of cars, so it will be a very busy day. Come on out and be a

corner worker. If you‟re a novice corner worker, we will instruct you and pair you up with a veteran corner worker. Its fun, exciting and a free lunch

is involved. It may be the last free lunch in the country! Contact Joe Faherty (253) 549 2082 or e-mail Joe at: [email protected] .

It is time to make your reservations for the AROC National Convention in Portland. I have attended two conventions, they were both great. You will

never be exposed to more Alfas in one place. There are lots of great events; the Portland Alfa club does it right. Oh yes, of course everyone speaks

Alfa at the Convention.

Yes, spring will arrive, and we can take some nice drives. It would be a good time to check your spare fuse box and replenish it as necessary. Fuses

don‟t weigh much, as spare parts go, but a burnt out fuse will shut your Alfa down in a hurry. Keep your eye out for some happy curves; let us

know where you found them!

Ciao, Harry

Tulip Rallye is getting close: By now Gordy, Fred, Dave K. and others

are getting prepared for this year‟s event by reading trivia books and trying

to think of twisted jokes. Why, because they know that is part of what will

help on April 25th. The great cars, fun roads mixed with goofy questions

makes for fun, laughs, and scenery on Whidbey Island and Skagit Valley.

Seattle Times wants you… yes, the Autobiography feature from the

Wheels section from the former P-I newspaper. It would be good publicity

for you, the club, and the marque. One entry is published every Sunday.

To submit: E-mail a photo of you and your car (172-dpi, about 5 by 7

inches) plus your name; phone number; occupation; car's year, make and

model; and complete the sentence "I love my car because...". Send to:

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Miniatures…

Yes… I have a sick passion for these

things. The 1:18 scale Alfetta GTV

made by AutoArt, that I mentioned a

couple months back has arrived and

looks great. The model is of the last of

the 4 cylinder cars made in 1980 that

was still for sale in Europe. It has the

dash and trim similar to the first GTV6

brought here in 1981. The detail to the

trim, engine, interior is outstanding. It sits a little high off the ground, just like the real ones did coming from the fac-

tory. The only surprise is that there is no suspension travel. Oh well, I can

deal with that and it looks great sitting on the shelf.

One early warning is that Minichamps is in the early stages of making a

1:18 scale of the 1938 Alfa 8C2900 B Lungo (Very similar to Jon‟s car) that

is in the Museo Alfa Romeo. To match the museum car, it will be light blue,

with a fabric sunroof. It probably won‟t be on store shelves until late in

2009. It will sell for around $200.00.

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Vote Gordy Hyde for AROC Board of Directors

Gordy is running for a position on the national board. Most of us know him very well and should be able to make up our votes rather easily on this. Just in case you aren’t sure how to vote, here is a statement about the position and our candidate.

The AROC Board of Directors is made up of twelve volunteers who direct the business of the national organization. Six Directors are elected each year to serve two-year terms. They are required to attend the annual meetings which take place at the national convention. The Directors also

participate in a number of conference calls and/or internet-based group discussions each year. Every April, “The Owner” contains a ballot and short biographies of members who would like to be selected for this voluntary role. The existing Board has diligently and cooperatively worked to lead the club through these times of declining membership and increasing costs. New challenges brought about by the downturn in the international economy await the future board. The election slate this year includes some of

the existing Directors have been nominated for re-election. Two other long-time members who have served AROC in the past were nominated as well. Dave Hammond served on the board previously and most recently chaired the Detroit convention. Nancy Mackey, from New Mexico was for-merly the Competition Director for AROC.

Your NWARC board nominated Gordy Hyde for this year‟s election. Gordy has been a member of NWARC since the mid-90s and his participation in the chapter activities pre-dates his Alfa ownership. He has served our chapter in a number of capacities, including President and Chair of the Potlatch organizing committee in 2005. His zeal for the marque and encouraging spirit should benefit the national club as it has our own chapter

through the years. You can support your chapter and Gordy by taking a moment to complete the ballot, placing a stamp on it and dropping it in the mail. Please do your part to ensure quality leadership in our organization.

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Letters to the editor...

Our High Performance Driving School on

March 29th appeared to be a huge suc-

cess. I believe this was the largest turnout we've ever had for an HPDS with 45 students. We had

every kind of weather you can think of including snow/hail AGAIN! Regardless of the weather, there

were plenty of smiles. A great variety of car; Dodge Challenger (Vanishing Point), Dodge Viper,

Acura NSX‟s, Bimmers, Subbies, Porsches and even 4 x Alfas (GTV6‟s & Milano). Everyone got a

chance to learn new things, and we only had one major breakdown. Unfortunately, you can proba-

bly guess the marque - Alfa!

I want to thank each of our instructors and volunteers for their participation. It‟s your effort and

energy that makes these events a success!

Don‟t forget that we have our first lapping day of the year at Pacific Raceways on April 23rd. Hope

to see you there! Brian Williams

I enjoyed your March newsletter article on the WWU VRI Tour. It is very

well written. The tour of WWU‟s Vehicle Research Institute was nothing

less than fantastic, my wife and I enjoyed it very much. I especially ap-

preciated the level of technical detail and variety of technologies pre-

sented by Messrs Leonhardt and Merrifield. It was refreshing to see the

enthusiasm and dedication of the students and instructors (mentors). My

hat is off to the NWARC activities chairpersons for arranging the tour and

the staff at WWU who supports this critically needed program.

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Trivia Answer from March...

What kind of car is advertised in the Men's room at Johnny

Carino’s Italian Restaurant in the town of Burlington, WA?

It would have been too

easy to simply have an

Alfa Romeo ad… no it

was something more

rare than that. The ad-

vertisement was for

Darracq Automobiles.

The French manufac-

turer, Automobiles Dar-

racq SA, was selling

more cars than they

could manufacture and

partnered with inves-

tors in Italy, as well as

Germany and others, to build the cars for them. In 1906 the Italian group

built a factory in Portello, just outside of Milan. They named it Società

Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) and started making cars. By 1909,

sales of the cars being made in numerous places, was slowing.

(Perhaps Boeing should have read the Darracq whitepaper prior to the 787

planning stages.)

To give themselves options to build other “more Italian” cars, the investors

re-formed the company into Anonima Lombarda Fabricca Automobilli

(ALFA) though still making a few Darracqs. In 1910, the first car designed

by the ALFA head engineer Giuseppi Merosi, known as the 24HP, became

the first car to wear the Alfa name and Badge. (The badge is modeled after

the Sforza family crest. The Sforza family being the most powerful family

in the region and also the previous Duke of Milan.)

By 1915, the company caught the eye of the talented and successful Nicola

Romeo who bought into the venture and added his name to the marque…

Alfa Romeo as we know it today.

Darracq eventually sold all interest in the car business and retired to his

home in Monte Carlo.

Wanted: A set of 4 Campagnolo wheels for an Alfa Spider. I‟m looking for wheels in Good Condition. If you don‟t have Campagnolo, but you have a set of nice wheels, contact me (Marke). [email protected]

For Sale: After racing it only once a year for the last three years I've decided to sell my RX-7 Pro7 racecar and free up the garage for new projects. The car is straight, never crashed, turn key and ready to race. It is fast in its class, and amazingly reliable! I built the car myself from a straight, rust free, one owner streetcar. The car still has the original engine but it is as quick down the straight as the guys with their shop built $$ 'stock' engines, in spite of my shift points being much earlier, and does not show any signs of old age. The car has

maybe 10 races since I built it, if that and I have not even replaced the spark-plugs in that time! Obviously I've changed the oil, brake fluid and brakes but that's it. Car can sit for months and then fire right up. I even usually drive the car to the track and many times don't even open the hood on a race weekend, and the car is as quick as the ones that have been tinkered with all weekend. Last fall I drove the car to the track, on the race tires, skipped the Saturday practice and Sunday morning qualifying. Was underweight in the Saturday qualifying so I had to start at the back of the field, did not touch a thing on the car all weekend, except fill it up with gas, and finished third in class (out of 6 Pro7 cars) and 20th out of 36 cars overall so the car is very capable. $3500 for a quick and hassle free sale. The car comes with 3 sets of wheels, Toyo RA-1 rain tires in great condition and used up shaved RA-1s on the other

two sets. Also includes a spare transmission, a locked rear end, extra carburetor and brake calipers and misc other bits and pieces.
