The best place to be on the 23rd of February was the warm and beautiful home of Fred Wright and Kathy Lombardo, on Totten Inlet near Olympia Washington. Though the parking had limited Alfas…

the house and garage were filled with Alfisti for the Annual NWARC Chili CookOff.

With 11 chilis and 4 cornbreads to sample it made for busy times in the kitchen. Our task was to try a little of each Chili then we submitted a 1st, 2nd,

and 3rd favorite version. We did the same for the Cornbreads.

The recipes varied greatly, just as the personalities do within our wonderful club. Some chilies were thin and soup like, others were meatless, or bean-free. Since the voting was people’s choice the only

real rule was, no rules. It worked great with every chili and cornbread getting votes. Volunteers tallied all of the votes and our host, Fred Wright provided the outcome. Before Fred announced the winner for the chili contest he had each of the 11 entrants re-late a little something about their own recipe.

Using a bottle of Lamarca Prosecco wine from Italy as the prize, Fred read out this years winner; Judy Gehring! Congrats! Next came the announcement

of the winner of the Cornbread contest and it went to Debi Schmid, along with a bottle of Domaine Ste

Michelle Brut Rose.

The food, drink and conversation was so good, hardly anyone noticed that we never went for a walk along the beach or that the Daytona 500 wasn’t showing on

the TVs. We did spend a little garage time checking out the latest technology on the new Tesla Model S… and going through the box of spare Alfa parts. Thanks to Fred & Kathy for hosting and to everyone who shared their kitchen talents! >

Thanks to Judy Gehring, here is the winning Chili recipe: Beef Short Rib Mole Chili Judy gives thanks to recipe ideas from Bobby Flay and Giada DeLaurentis

4-5 lb boneless beef short ribs, cut into ¾ in cubes

(Costco has great, well-trimmed short ribs but you could use chuck and make Chuck Chili instead)

1 large onion, chopped

1/2 fresh poblano chile, chopped

1 small jalapeno, chopped

4 oz dried ancho chiles

2 T New Mexico chile powder

4 cloves garlic, chopped

8 oz tomato sauce

2 T agave syrup (or use maple)

Double shot espresso

26 oz box chicken stock

1 bottle dark beer

2-3 T chopped semisweet chocolate

Following these steps:

1. Stem, seed and tear up dried anchos and simmer in 1 ½ c water 5 min

2. Put chilis and water in blender, add 2 T New Mexico chile powder and blend until pureed.

3. Pat dry, salt and pepper beef cubes and saute in oil in 4 batches to brown, removing each batch to bowl.

4. Return meat to pan, stir in 2 T cumin, add beer and simmer until most of it evaporates. Put meat back into bowl.

5. In same pot, saute onion in 1 T oil until golden. Add garlic, poblano and jalapeno and cook until soft.

6. Add about half the chile puree in case it’s too hot but save the rest to add later because some of the heat cooks away.

7. Add the chicken broth, tomato sauce, agave or maple syrup and espresso and bring to boil. Cook 15 min. to thicken a bit.

8. Add the beef, reduce heat, cover and simmer 1 ½ hours or until beef is tender, checking part way through to see if it needs salt or more chile puree.

9. Cool and refrigerate overnight, or not.

10. Reheat chili, add more chile puree to taste, and stir in the chocolate be-fore serving.

When it comes to Debi’s winning Cornbread recipe, (Corn Pudding) it came from a collection of Frida Kahlo and her cook Eulalia and had been served at a "National" dinner party at the Blue House in Coyoacan for Diego and his significant political and revolutionary friends on 16 September 1942.

(September is the "Patriotic Month")

The book also included info on the fun Chili the Schmids brought. The Beef, Mason Style chili was prepared by the brick masons working on the new stu-

dios for Frida and Diego in Coyoacan for the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Cross on 3 May 1943. ("Everyone knew that in Mexico, on May 3, con-struction workers and members of traditional dance groups called concheros pay homage to Christ's Cross")

The recipe book was "Frida's Fiestas, Recipes and Reminiscences of Life with Frida Kahlo" by Guadalupe Rivera and Marie-Pierre Colle. This is a great addition to the library of anyone interested in cooking and the arts.

Just the Facts...

We return to Angelo’s Ristorante in

Bellevue for our NWARC March meeting.

This time, along with the fun fellow Al-

fisti and good food, we have Ken Case

and Shannon Low doing a presentation

on attending the Barrett Jackson auto

auctions in the sunny southwest. Each

of them attended from differing perspec-

tives as one (Shannon) is a regular at-

tendee and sells cars there often, and

the other (Ken) is a newbie and spent

time watching how the presentation and

purchases work.

Ken has put together a number

of slides and will share these as

part of their presentation.

These auctions are amazing

events and this should be both

fun and eye opening for the rest

of us. There will also be an

award for whoever has come the

farthest to attend the meeting!

See you there!

Gather at 6:30 PM to visit and order food. The meeting should start soon after

7:00 PM.

March Club Meeting Mar 12th

Sorry…

I am sure many of you had planned to attend the St Paddy’s Day Party

at the wonderful home of Joe & Lynn Faherty. Unfortunately, for the

first time in about a hundred years, Joe and Lynn need to cancel the

party. Lynn is recovering from a broken bone, and though doing better,

its not a good idea to try to host a party. I think we all understand this.

They have tentative plans to reschedule an event later in the year… but

for now you’ll just have to find your own party for St Paddy’s Day.

President’s Column By Bill Gehring

Alfa news, books, chili chefs, and

maybe a bit

about models. It seems I may have enough to write about for this column.

I think I will be like Jimmy

Fallon and start with a joke. Let’s see, that would probably be the state of Alfa returning to the U.S. At the Detroit

Auto Show, Fiat Chrysler President Marchionne said a full return (Giulia, Giulietta and spider) would be in 2015 and that a full plan would be released in April. There will be a 4C Targa at the Geneva show but Gordy’s 4C is supposed to be here in June. According to Fiat Chrysler, the selling

dealers “have yet to be informed” but I don’t know if they

are being coy or just unorganized. At least we hope Fiat/Maserati of Kirkland will be one of them as Alex has prom-ised an event when they arrive.

I just got a notice of some good events coming up in Ore-gon. AROO is having a Aug 8-10 tour to Pendleton that sounds good, but probably most of us will stay in town for Ken Case’s drive on Aug 9. The group called the “Alfa Wan-nabe Car Club” is organizing something a little higher end, six days to Glacier National Park and Cour d’Alene Sep 2-7.

Lodging, meals including wine, all inclusive will be $2050 per couple. I have more information about both so email [email protected] if you’re interested.

I just finished Inside Shelby American, by John Morton. I

picked it up (from my local library) because I thought there would be some good stuff about the 2.5 Trans Am days when he was the BRE Datsun 510 driver who had such a great battle with the Alfas. He was from the Midwest, skinny with glasses, sort of like me in those days, but he

went to California to be a race driver, sort of not like me. It seems to me he had about the same chance as someone going to Hollywood to be an actor or actress, but he even-tually succeeded. He attended the Shelby School of High Performance Driving, where his instructor was Pete Brock and he used the school car which was the first Cobra! He asked Shelby for a job and got one, pushing a broom. He

ended up working there three years with people such as Brock, Dan Gurney, Ken Miles and Phil Hill. He did a good job describing Shelby American from the inside as well as telling a lot of racing stories. When Shelby got help from

Ford, he became more corporate and Morton was let go. Brock was already gone, so in 1969 Morton ended up with him. Brock was originally going to race Toyota 2000 GTs

(of which very few exist) but someway that was poached by Shelby so Brock approached Datsun and BRE became their racing organization, big competitors to the Alfa GTs in the 1971 and 72 Trans Am. Morton didn’t have as much to say about that experience as I had hoped, but about the time I finished the book, I came across a great You Tube video,

“Against All Odds”. It was sponsored by Datsun, so you can guess the bias, but it is really worthwhile. It follows the 2.5 rivalry at Watkins Glen, Riverside, and especially the last race, at Laguna Seca. Great footage, a lot of nose-to-tail racing and position changes, worth finding the video for

right there. It seems that the race should not have been doable without a gas stop, but Horst Kwech in the Alfa was able to do so and won by a few seconds, clinching the se-

ries championship. Or so he thought. There was a Datsun

protest, and it seems that the Alfa may have had some Smoky Yunick fabrication, a gas tank that was three gallons too large. I guess you know the result. Good story, though, and as I said, the video is definitely worth watch-ing. I found it on You Tube by simply typing in “against all odds datsun”.

I have a few Alfa books, maybe a few too many, and I don’t think there is a lot of new information, but I just read in “Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car” about a new one that I

think just became available. 100 Years of Alfa, by Schiffer Publishing, a 136 page hardcover. Its real name was Alfa Romeo: Automobilifaszination Seit 1910 by Heel Verlag GmbH. I think I will skip that version. It gets a pretty good review and it is only about $23 at Amazon. My birth-

day is in only a few months, so it could become an addition

to the library. Actually, we are going on a vacation soon where I will be needing reading material, so hmm…

I’m sure Fred has a good article in this issue about the Chili

Cook off, but after seeing the effort that is put in by at least one participant, I want to make sure they all get credit. Of course, I may make some mistakes, so please let me know if I do. There was great variety, lots of really good chili, and I hope the list will cause some new attendees to come next year. Thank you, and kudos, to Joe Faherty for the

Real McCoy Texas, Tony Schmidt for the Frida Kahlo’s Feast of the Holy Cross, Miguel Salguero for the “Regular Chili”, Fred Wright for Walla Walla Turkey chili, Chuck Ar-nold for Pork Slider, Louisa Case for 9 Spice Chili, Merrill and Heidi Gordon for Teenage Chili, Gayle McMichael for

Vegetarian, Tracy Kingston for Jamie Oliver style, Gordy Hyde for Corn and Bean, and Judy Gehring for Beef Short

rib Mole. As I said, a proper chili can be a lot of time and work and these people deserve some accolades. Cornbread entries did a good job too, and credit goes to Debi Schmidt, Lynn Faherty, Joe McCarthy and Tracy Kingstone.

I guess I didn’t get to talking about models, but those of you that know me know that is inevitable and will happen probably more than once. Now I have to help prepare for the board meeting that will be at our house, and I hope Fred will have some results of the survey he sent everyone.

If you didn’t respond, I hope you will. Thanks, Bill

Bill Gehring

Each year, the NWARC has a wonderful 3 day drive that has become both a fun event, and a little famous since they fea-tured our 2013 border crossing drive in the December AlfaOwner publication. This year will be another great Half Lap. The good part is we’ll have some incredible scenery and activities. The bad part is we’ll have fewer miles than

usual. We are aiming for the San Juan Islands with possible whales, boats, BBQ, ferry boats and wonderful views that

people travel a long way to capture… its in our backyard and we’ll be in our Alfas. Save the dates Sept 13-15!

SOVREN and NWARC are working out details regarding the Car Corral space for this year’s PNW Historics on the July 4th weekend. I had hoped to have it in this issue, but trust that we will have our space and we’ll have registration in our next issue. This is always a fun event with many great vintage racers on track and great cars parked on site. It’s a great tra-dition in the NW.

Gita e’Corsa was revived last year by NWARC with great success. The trick we pulled off last year included a car show in Redmond, a scenic drive, and a track day at The Ridge. This year, we do Gita e’Corsa again, but we’ll make August be our

Gita e’Corsa Month. We’ll start the month with our Viva Italia car show on Aug 2. The next weekend is our Summer Drive on Aug 9. Then the third weekend is our track day at The Ridge on Aug 16. Last year we had fewer track attendees than we should have because people tried to sign up too late. Make sure you plan early to be part of each part of Gita e’Corsa 2014.

The Concours d’Elegance at The Wood, Saturday, July 12, 2014 will have Chief Honorary Judge Tom Bryant, former editor of Road and Track Magazine. The Concours is held on the

18th Fairway of the Lynnwood Golf Course from 1pm - 5pm. We are looking for fifteen (15) quality Full Classic vehicles, fifteen(15) sport cars up to 1972 and fifteen (15) Muscle Cars be-tween 1964 and 1972. A list for cars that qualify can be found at www.concoursatthewood.com under downloads. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards for the three (3) classes plus Peoples Choice.

Americas Car Museum is pleased to honor some of the finest examples of automotive art and design worldwide as the host of the new Pacific Northwest Concours d'Elegance pre-

sented by U.S. Bank. Formerly known as the Kirkland Concours d'Elegance and recognized as one of the premier Concours events in the country, ACM is proud to carry on the great tradi-tion with the Pacific Northwest Concours d'Elegance. The event will be on September 7, 2014. They aren’t featuring Alfa this year, but you can get more info at the events site at: www.lemaymuseum.org

GoKart Enduro Keeps The Off Season Competition High

How Mirko pulls the gokart enduro off each year, we’re not

sure, but we are certainly glad he finds a way. The 2014

Karting Enduro Challenge was another one of those succesful

and fun events filled with whacky people, aggressive competi-

tion, and some damn fine racing.

We had 8 teams of 4 people each. The team names were the

usual fun tags; Misfits, Gardeners, Bristow’s Blasters, Squid,

Forza, Hoosier Daddy, Red River Raiders, and Bent Cams.

The starting grid is chosen randomly during a pre race drawing. Then the gokarts are staged for a Le Mans

style start. The karts are warmed up and running, with one team member by the kart to help buckle the

driver in. The drivers wait across the track for the countdown and start. When the Start is signaled, they

run over, jump in, and get the seatbelt on as fast as possible, and most importantly… hit the gas pedal.

The start went well and each

team jostled for position for

the first 15 or 20 minutes.

After that, the teams started

to group a little and the com-

petition within those groups

were the races within the

race.

Team Misfits was in a strong

lead spot, but if they messed

up, there was a group of 3

teams (Bristow’s, Hoosier,

and Forza) behind them

happy to take their lead spot.

As the race went along the

other group of 4 teams fought

hard and changed positions

between themselves over and

over.

Each team has to pit a mini-

mum of 3 times to switch

drivers. Each driver must

drive a minimum of 20 minutes so it balances out the racing across

the team. The gokarts hold enough gas to complete the whole 2

hour endure so the pit stops include only a

quick driver change.

The SyKart staff did a great job of monitor-

ing the track, driving styles, and helping

people when they got crossed up during

the racing. Each time a gokart spun out or

two gokarts were tangled, they staff had to

run quickly to the spot to push them back

into the right path. The only casualty was

one of the gokarts broke down and had to

be switched out for another… that unfortu-

nately set that team back a couple laps.

They also held flags and signage to warn

the drivers to “Stop Bumping” or flag them

with a warning or penalty on second no-

tices. I was told that bumping is under-

stood but not when you still have your foot

on the gas pedal, and they can tell from

the sound if that’s the case.

With all the pit stops almost done, and the

clock closing in on 2 full hours, competition

was still as high as it could be. Since each

lap is only around 30 seconds… if after

120 minutes you are with a couple laps of

another, you are close.

NWARC March 2014 newsletter page 8

As the checkered flag flew ending

the race, Team Misfit had con-

trolled most of the race and won

with 219 laps at an average of 32.8

seconds per lap. Behind them was

the group of 3 gokarts in 2nd, 3rd,

and 4th (Bristow’s Blasters, Hoosier

Daddy, Forza) which after the two

hours were all on the same 208

laps. That means they were within

less than 30 seconds of each other.

Then, amazingly, the last 4 gokarts

(Squid, Bent Cams, Red River Raid-

ers, Gardeners) were also grouped

together on the same 187 laps.

They to were all within a half min-

ute of each other.

The racing was fun nobody has last-

ing scars. Before the racing even

ended one of my teammates turned

to me and commented, “If NWARC

is doing this again next year, count me in.” I

agree. When you see someone wearing the

NWARC Karting Challenge T-shirt, you know they

have tasted tough competition.

Nice job Mirko!

Make your plans now to attend the MG Car Club’s annual Tulip Rallye on April 19th! Reschedule anything in the way… this is always a great event. We start from the

Skagit Valley Mall in Burlington and wander the scenic roads of Skagit County and along the way, answer the gimmick questions. There is always a great variety of

cars, and the Alfa club is usually well represented. The competition is fun, but tough and I must see if my daughters have the gall to beat me a second time. Go to: http://www.mgccnwc.com/ or fill out the registration form then have fun!

Wilderness Park for a bathroom stop.

Next leg heads south to Lake Tapps.

Once going around the lake on a lei-

surely fun drive and seeing the lake

in a peek a boo view, then we leave

the lake area. Head downhill to Au-

burn to locate the Sunbreak Café at

22 A Street SW Auburn, WA 98001

for a brunch, or lunch.

Please RSVP to [email protected] or call Paul Mel-

rose at 425 306 8525. They need your rsvp so they can have enough

route guide handouts at the beginning.

Remember, if you see an Alfa Romeo on the road wave and jump at your chance to make a new friend. If they’re not a member of NWARC, encourage them to be part of the best club around!

If you are a member, make sure you renew your membership when it comes to its annual end date. Your membership helps

support all the great events, newsletters, and Alfa Owner magazines. Another support is when you use the advertisers within the newsletters.

Membership

I sent out an e-mail Survey in early February asking feed-back on how we can make a good Alfa club even better. There are plenty of members who have replied with good

info, but there are lots of you who haven’t uttered a peep. Time to speak is now. Dig into your e-mail inbox, find the e-mail with the subject line NWARC Feedback wanted! and reply to me.

If you don’t reply, I’ll just put words in your mouth like, “That Fred guy is not only a nice guy, but he needs my Alfa Giulia Super as a gift along with a couple thousand

dollar upkeep budget.” or perhaps, “Free donuts once a week for all club officers.” See what happens if you don’t reply!
