Iniezione The newsletter of the NorthWest Alfa Romeo Club
I f you have an interest in some of the more unusual Alfas
and a liking for good sto-
ries, both can be found in
abundance at founder mem-
ber Jay Nuxoll’s place. His
workshop/garage/storage
area is known as the G’Raj
Mahal in honor of his devo-
tion to the cross and serpent,
and a great turnout of 30+
members visited for our club meeting on June
11 to pay homage.
The bright sunshine and hot weather had us
constantly moving between the fascinating varie-
ty of cars parked outside - some Jay’s, most be-
longing to members - and the cool and intri-
guing depths of the garage. Pizza and cake
kept us fed while we perused the racks of
spares and the wide range of cars, from a
1900 and a Montreal to the row of five 164s
sitting outside!
Being the self-titled “Old Two-Liter Lover”
that he is, Jay has several of the classic 50s
-60s 102-series Alfas, including one each of
the three models they came in - Sedan, Spi-
der and Sprint.
The 1960 cream-colored Sedan with the
tail fins is a late model - they were only sold
from 1958-1960 - and is one of only two still running in the
USA. The Sprint is the very first one completed for sale, and
Jay believes it to be the only working one
in the USA.
The red Spider holds a special place in
Jay’s heart as his first Alfa. How many of
us still own the first Alfa we bought? Af-
ter being smitten with two-liter Spiders
during his army stint in Germany, he pur-
chased this one in December 1964 (as
he was finish-
ing law school)
from Andrea
Frecchia, Hil-
ton Hotels’ in-
terior designer.
It was originally grey with green Naugahyde interior
but Jay’s done quite a bit to it since, adding parts and
accessories from another dozen Spiders he’s owned.
It was his daily driver until 1990.
Back then (1965) Alfa owners in the Seattle area
learned to maintain their own cars as there weren’t

The Busy Days of Summer
I love being surprised and that is just what happened the
other day when a friend gave me a wonderful gift. It was a
coffee table book with the exaggerated lines of the one-off
Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 5 gracing the cover, a few more Alfas and
other great cars inside, with the title: Bellissima!
The book is very nice and includes stunning photography
by Peter Harholdt, with dramatic lighting on all of the twenty-
two cars and motorcycles featured. The forward and text are
written by Winston Goodfellow, Robert Cumberford and Ken
Gross. The book was created to go with a great temporary
display of Italian Automotive Renaissance cars in the Frist
Center for Contemporary Arts in Nashville Tennessee during
the summer of 2016. Ken Gross was the guest curator of
this show and, like all of the car displays he has put together,
gathered stunning cars and produced a beautiful and informa-
tive display. Within the books covers you'll find all three
B.A.T. cars as well as an Alfa 6C2500 C, Lancia Stratos HF
Zero, Ferrari 250 GTO, Cisitalia 202 SC, and many more
works of beautiful Italian design.
Many of us were lucky enough to attend the AROC National
Convention in 2016, held in Nashville, and enjoy this exhibit
first-hand. Cindy and I were two of those people and I am not
alone in saying how amazing it was to get up close to each of
the great cars. I also remember seeing the book on sale, and
not wanting to carry it the whole time I was walking among
the cars, I told myself buy a copy before leaving. I forgot and
left empty handed. That is fixed now, thanks to my friend and
the latest gift.
Every weekend has something to do during this busy car
event time of year. From vintage races to club BBQs, from
car shows to drives, there’s always something... plus we have
our family or home chores to try to achieve. Tough to sched-
ule but well worth it as there is so much fun to be had when
we get together. Coming up on the first Saturday in July we
have the club BBQ held at Gary & Marie Patitz’ home. When
you arrive you can see they have a wonderful place nestled in
a fantastic wooded yard. Then the garage doors open and
you get the bonus of the Alfa Romeo collection, and the nu-
merous additional displays, toys, vintage radios, books and
more. All while being fed 'dogs and burgers hot off the grill.
This is a fantastic way to end the day after enjoying the Pacif-
ic Northwest Historics just a mile away at Pacific Raceways.
The Historics run Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we
have a spare Car Corral ticket if you'd like to park with the
club. I'll also have a table out there to greet possible new
members and rumor has it, I get that free toaster if I sign up 3
people. Make sure you stop and say hello while you're there.
The second weekend in July is the Rose Cup Races in
Portland. There will be a few different classes of racing going
on but the key for the weekend is the chance that the Alfa
Romeo Giulietta
TCR race teams will
be there. No prom-
ises but they've
been racing in the
series around the
country and if they
can attend, this is
the closest the get to
the NW. This last
weekend, they raced
at Mosport and one
of the cars suffered
a major crash that would have ended the car in years past.
Now, the crew worked overnight and thanks to cool technolo-
gy and car design, they were able to swap out parts and go
racing the next day. Amazing. If they make it to Portland... I'll
be there to cheer them on, and I'll be parked with the Alfa
Romeo Owners of Oregon Car Corral and general party area
while I'm there! You should be there as well.
Coming up we also have the Kirkland Car Show on Aug.
11. I still have spaces available for you to show your car! We
have a rockin' event planned for the August club meeting at
Group 2 Motorsports on Saturday, August 10th. (Yes, we
moved the date from the Tuesday back to the Saturday!)
We'll have other great reasons to gather like a tentative
drive in August, and the pre-screening of The Art of Racing In
the Rain with Garth Stein on September 8! Soon after that is
our Brew Cruise and then our Half Lap of Washington... both
in September!
Thanks goes out to the whole Nuxoll family who hosted us
for our June club meeting and club birthday celebration. To
have 30 people come over takes a huge amount of effort and
it paid off for us with a wonderful mix of cars and personali-
ties. As Jay Nuxoll helped start the club, we have him to
blame for all the fun we have together driving, socializing,
swapping tall tails, and enjoying this fun club.
Lastly, it was great to see so many people from NWARC
wandering the Olympic Sculpture Park on the Seattle water-
front during last weekends Art of The Car display and fund-
raiser for Seattle Art Museum. With three amazing Alfa Ro-
meos displayed and 15 other fantastic cars, the crowds were
very good, and very thrilled to see the art or the design. At
one point, all three Freds in the Alfa club were together in the
same area, yet nothing cosmic happened. My schedule with
this event and my being slow with the column caused our
newsletter to be delayed. (It’s not all due to Fred’s insanely
busy schedule; there were some hold-ups on this end too. -
Ed) Sorry about that and we'll see you at the next event!

any dealers. About a dozen local
owners met from time to time for par-
ties in Teo Morellato’s apartment on
Rainier Avenue. In WA state eight
members were needed to form a bo-
na fide club, so Jay dropped in one
evening and persuaded eight of the
group to let him notarize their signatures. As
a result the NorthWest Alfa Romeo Club
came into being on April 15, 1965.
With the arrival in the region of a dealer
(Bellevue Alfa Romeo) and the subsequent
growth of local Alfa ownership, interest even-
tually grew in joining the national AROC,
which had been started in Chicago in 1958.
After some by-laws restricting the chapter’s independence had been amended,
AROC issued our formal Chapter Charter fifty years ago, in May 1969. Thanks
again to Jay, both for getting us started and for hosting a fascinating evening!

Rare Cars and Tall Tales - continued
N ot the timing of driv-
ers’ laps - though
that’s always of in-
terest to each individual - but
when you run an evening
event in the notoriously fickle
month of June you pray for
good weather. Fortunately,
at our event on June 19
Chief Driving Instructor Mirko Freguia’s renowned
organizational talents apparently extended to the
clouds as well as the track. Despite the ever-
present threat of storms, other than a very few
flurries of raindrops the track stayed dry all even-
ing - until a massive cloud-
burst flooded everything as
we drove home! Nice timing,
Mirko.
We had a good turnout in
general, with four Alfas on
track - two Giulias (one a
Quad), a 4C and, a real first, a Stelvio, which kept
pace with the regular Giulia all evening! That’s pretty
impressive. Two spectators also brought Giulias.
Other cars included
the usual miscella-
ny of BMWs, Por-
sches, Audis and
other enthusiastical-
ly driven makes.
Every track day
seems to attract at
least one car that
makes a big impres-
sion, with an exhilarat-
ing exhaust note to
match the speed and
skill with which it’s piloted around the track. This
time it was an Audi R8; those of us arriving a little
late could hear its V10 being thoroughly enjoyed
down the main straight, and it put in some seriously
fast laps.
Thanks
again to Mirko and his
team for another suc-
cessful and highly
enjoyable evening!

Twilight Lapping - Timing is Everything!
Iniezione page 5 July 2019
W e were fortunate enough to plan a wonderful trip to
France this past April, with an itinerary that included
lots of driving on small (Fred) roads. Upon our arri-
val at EuropCar we were offered a
“Yaris” and had to negotiate an alterna-
tive. Luckily, we ended up with an Alfa
Giulia, identical in color to ours in Seat-
tle but with a diesel engine.
After maneuvering through morning
Paris rush hour traffic, we were finally
in the beautiful countryside heading
south towards the town of Chablis, ulti-
mately stopping in the quaint little
walled village of Noyers-Sur-Serein for
lunch. With its timbered architecture
and cobbled streets, we really felt like
we’d finally arrived in France! Over
lunch we were given some travel tips
from the English-speaking owner. Ironically, we
found out later that Alfa members Jon Inge and
Lindsay Geyer had eaten at the same off-the-
beaten-path restaurant and chatted with the
same owner on a trip just a year ago!
Our home for the next three nights was in the
lovely city of Beaune, which is built over wine
cellars (caves) and had the snazziest cars we
saw in all of France. Must be money in the
wine industry! We loved the countryside
north of Beaune in the Bourgogne area,
with rolling hills and winding single lane
roads amidst the vineyards.
Time to leave, we stopped to wash the
Giulia after a mix of snow, rain and road
grime. Heading south to our destination in
Provence, we were frustrated by the Alfa’s
GPS system and realized Verizon had no
coverage so we couldn't use our phones!
We spent many hours on small roads that
weren’t shown on our Michelin map, at one
point passing right by a huge nuclear power plant.
Below Lyon, we joined the autoroute (with its tolls)
to make up some time, and exited at Avignon for
L’Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue, where we stayed, upon the
recommendation of fellow Alfistis Bill & Judy
Gehring, in a delightful little B & B.
Touring the hilltop towns of Luberon, Gordes,
Roussillon and Menerbes we really tested the
width of our Alfa as we squeezed between ancient
walls on rough roads. We were thoroughly enjoy-
ing the Alfa, but in Europe it’s a relatively big car
for the typical small village roads! Nevertheless
there was definitely the pride of driving in a way cool car
amongst the other European riffraff.
After a couple of nights in this beautiful area, we once again
hit the road. We visited another ancient hilltop medi-
eval citadel called Les
Baux, from where we
could see the the city of
Marseille and the Medi-
terranean beyond.
A couple of hours into
our backroads drive to
Carcassonne, a caution
symbol illuminated on
the dash and said “huile
vidanger”, which Google
Translate said meant
“oil empty”. We pulled
into the nearest gas sta-
tion and tried to find out what kind of oil this Alfa
diesel would take, even going so far as to try to
text our local guru, Fred Russell. A young man
who spoke some English even tried calling Europ-
Car, who said, “just put anything in it”. Fortunate-
ly he was able to get our infotainment system
switched from French to English and we were all
relieved to see the
new translation on
the dash - “empty
oil” meant “time
for an oil change”!
We continued
onto the 13th cen-
tury walled city of
Carcassonne (La
Cite), just in time
for the sunset, the
night lights and no
tourists. Spied
this little Alfa Mi-
To, the most prominent Alfa type we saw in
France, driving alongside the walls.
A (Diesel) Giulia in France
Iniezione page 6 July 2019
On the road again, passing “caravans” and trucks and get-
ting lost on country roads. Driving in the constant traffic cir-
cles in France we were pleased with the manners of maintain-
ing a left turn blinker until approaching ones desired exit, then
quickly changing to a right turn blinker. It was very helpful to
others joining the circle, mak-
ing for a quicker flow.
We took this narrow road to
the pilgrimage hillside town of
Rocamadour, which is built into
the cliffs. A whole story in it-
self there - needless to say,
get ready to climb a lot of
stairs! Once again we were
grateful for the Alfa’s “mirrors
in” function at the entrance and
exit to our (La Cite) inn (see
photo).
Driving on, the Dordogne
River Valley is so beautiful,
blending walnut groves with corn-
fields, hilltop castles and lazy rivers.
We stayed a couple of nights in Sar-
lat-en-Canada and visited Lascaux,
with it’s prehistoric artwork in lime-
stone caves. It was amazing, as
were castles Castelnaud, Beynac
and Chateau Des Milandes, to a
name a few.
After a colorful Saturday market in
Sarlat we once again headed north,
taking the autoroute for a brief time
and willing to pay the tolls in order
to make some time. Their speed
limit is 130 km/h, around 81 mph,
perfect for the Giulia, and we finally head-
ed off on an obscure route towards Am-
boise. Passing fields of bright yellow mus-
tard, huge wind turbines and even an
abandoned castle along the way, we were
now in the Loire River Valley. Amboise is
a charming city and we visited Chenon-
ceaux and the retired home of Leonardo
da Vinci. The Alfa continued to feel spe-
cial, and we even felt good parking next to
a Rolls-Royce with UK plates in Amboise.
How did they even get that car into our
little hotel parking lot?
Leaving Amboise, we headed for the
autoroute, and once again noticed that
drivers really respect the use of the right lane for travel, and
the left two lanes only to pass. They are much more aware of
what all other drivers are doing and it was a joy to drive with
them. Of course, once
we neared Paris all lanes
had to be used and all
road civility vanished.
We caught up with an-
other Alfa Giulia, same
color, and drove in tan-
dem to the rental car re-
turn at Orly Airport; it was
only the fourth Giulia we’d
seen on our entire trip.
We were glad to return
the car in relatively one
piece after driving 2,592
Kilometers (1,611 miles)
in the 14 days, although it
seemed like we’d driven so many more miles than
that!
We spent the last three nights in Paris, and were on
a Seine River Bateau cruise the night Notre Dame
Cathedral burned. It was a surreal experience and
the rest of our time in this marvelous city was marred
by sadness and bad air. It was not a damper, howev-
er, on an amazing road trip and fabulous vacation in
France. With fond memories and gratefulness we are
very happy to be able to share it with you.
How did the car compare to our own Giulia, here in
the USA? The diesel engines increased torque did
not make up for the lesser HP; it still felt quick, but not
as satisfyingly quick as we enjoy in our own car. On
the other hand the added fuel economy -
almost double - somewhat made up for it,
considering the cost of fuel in Europe!
Also remember that rental cars are never
a true example; this one had been driven
hard and put away wet, and had some is-
sues that we knew were not correct and
marred our experience. We’re not com-
plaining, though; the secondary highways
were slower, as were we as we enjoyed the
splendor all around, and It still felt quite con-
fident at 80 mph on the autoroute.
And driving an Alfa just felt good.

festive vibe for over ten years. Come on out and see cars of
all types and sizes in a suburban village atmosphere!
Magnolia Village, W. McGraw St and 34th Ave W.
I f you haven't been to the PNW Historics and seen the car
corral, you should. Better yet, you should be in it! It occurs
all three days (July 5-7) of the Historics but Saturday is the
big show and shine of nearly 250 cars from all of the local
clubs. (There were 40 clubs at the Tulip Rallye.) We want a
good showing of Alfas as Fred will have a tent/table with our
club info; we’re allowed up to 20 cars.
You also want to be there because you will be down there
for the Patitz Barbecue on Saturday anyway. Plus as a corral
participant you can drive parade laps during the lunch break.
Finally, the races themselves should be a good show as the
theme is the 50th anniversary of IMSA Racing - and you’ll be
parked right next to the paddock.
Prices for a car and driver are $50 for all three days or $30
for one day. Passengers are $40 for the weekend or $25 for
one day. Children 7-16 are $5 per day. You don't need to
commit for passengers or children ahead of time, as their tick-
ets can be pur-
chased there. Pro-
ceeds go to Chil-
drens' Hospital
We had to com-
mit to corral ticket
numbers last
month, but you
may want to check with Bill Gehring to see if he has any
spares or if there have been any cancellations. He’s at
[email protected] or 425 822 4231.
Even if you can’t get into the corral, come on down anyway!
Walking through the paddock is always great fun, and you’re
bound to met some fellow members. And don’t forget the
Patitz party just a few minutes from the track; see page 3 for
details.

S ave the date #1 - we’re plan-
ning another epic road trip!
This year, we head south and
west. We'll run out of Washington
roads half way through the first day
but that's okay since there are great
roads in Oregon too. The afternoon
of the first day we enjoy the Mario
Andretti, Rally Cars, and other racing
displays within the wonderful World
of Speed Museum in Wilsonville,
Oregon. Afterwards, a short wander
over to stay and dine in McMinnville, Oregon.
The next morning gets us face to face with the Spruce

more in the Evergreen Aviation &
Space Museum; the evening takes us
on twisty roads to the coast.
Our last day brings us more twisty
roads and across the Astoria Bridge
and back towards Seattle, using some
nice rural roads in Washington
State. There should be a good bal-
ance of cars, miles, food, scenery and
historical facts - the magic mix!

B uon giorno! Due cappuccino…per favore!
That is how we started every morning at our
fabulous hotels. This was the most amazing
trip that Lynn and I have ever experienced. We
certainly expected the great museums, but the ho-
tels - and especially the food - were fantas-
tic. Steve Austin planned each day with a great
balance of museums, wine and cheese visits,
lunches and Italian multicourse dinners.
Among our favorites were two of the exceedingly
rare Paris Alfas, which had been assembled in Par-
is from parts shipped by Alfa to avoid taxes and
fees. Their badges say “Paris” rather than “Milano”!
Then there was the Tazio museum, and the rooftop
FIAT test track with a cinquecento going around,
and the Ascari Monza, and the list goes on!! Add
the fabulously famous art and music...so much to
see and do.
The food and tour (FUN PARTS) started out
great and then got better as the trip went on! Did I
mention the great food and LOTS of new Alfisti
friends? We covered so many great locations and
events; this is only a teaser to whet your appetite!
The next issue of the Alfa Owner will have a more
comprehensive report by John Ireland. If you’ve
never been on one of these trips you owe yourself
the experience; they truly are amazing!

Larry and Dee Jungers’ 1967 and 1974 Spiders
Some of you may remember long-time club members Larry
and Dee Jungers. When Dee came down with cancer and
subsequently passed away Larry parked the Spiders in a large
garage (along with several other cars) and didn’t use them
again. Now that Larry has also passed away, his brother -in-
law George Brown is helping Larry’s sister sell the cars.
1974 Spider (green): This appears to be in very good condi-
tion, with 53,524 miles. The paint, chrome and upholstery look
very good, with no rust, dents or tears. The engine and engine
compartment look good as well. The convertible top does
have a tear and will need to be replaced.
Both cars are in Auburn, WA; no attempt has been made to
start either one. If you have any questions about either car or
would like to see them, please contact George Brown at 702-
232-6344.
1969 Spider (white): This has a hard top; the exterior has a
few rust spots and the hood has a rusty seam on the inside of
the nose, but the floor and trunk look good. The upholstery is
rough, but not shredded. The engine appears to be OK.
