Think about what you know about inherited and learned traits.

Share what you know with a partner.

In your journal, record 5 traits that you think you have inherited from your parents, and 5 traits you think you have learned from your parents. Include a title for your lists.

Fur Color of Bears ...

Some genes are more powerful than others. Even though a bear can inherit a gene for dark brown fur color and a gene for light brown fur color, the bear will have dark brown fur because this trait is more powerful or dominant. The light brown fur gene is recessive.

A learned behavior is a behavior that an animal develops by observing other animals or by being taught. For example, a colt may learn to wear a saddle and bridle and carry someone on its back. Another example is that you want to learn to play tennis, so you watch others, may take lessons, prctice and learn how to play the sport.

Some behaviors are a combination of instinct and learning. Young lions have the instinct to hunt, but at first they don't know how to sneak up on another animal. They watch their mother when she hunts and imitate her and they practice. Over time they become successful hunters.
