Family Gene Pool
Look at the two parents' portrait and read the listed traits.
Since children get their traits or genes from their parents, use these traits to draw what you think this couple's child might look like. (Each person at your table will select their own traits and draw their own picture.)
Give the child you drew a name and write it at the top of your drawing.

Let's discuss:
What are inherited traits?
Why are they important?
Inside living things are special parts called genes and DNA that contain instructions for how an organism will be formed. The combination of our genes is what makes each of us unique.
genes - inherited parts of a cell that have the set of instructions that meke certain parts of living things
DNA - the collection of all the sets of directions for making all parts of a living thing

Fur Color of Bears ...
Some genes are more powerful than others. Even though a bear can inherit a gene for dark brown fur color and a gene for light brown fur color, the bear will have dark brown fur because this trait is more powerful or dominant. The light brown fur gene is recessive.

Read text page 566-569. Add any additional information you learn to our T-Chart.
A learned behavior is a behavior that an animal develops by observing other animals or by being taught. For example, a colt may learn to wear a saddle and bridle and carry someone on its back. Another example is that you want to learn to play tennis, so you watch others, may take lessons, prctice and learn how to play the sport.

Some behaviors are a combination of instinct and learning. Young lions have the instinct to hunt, but at first they don't know how to sneak up on another animal. They watch their mother when she hunts and imitate her and they practice. Over time they become successful hunters.

Instinctual behavior (innate) - ways of behaving (acting) that you have from birth
Learned behavior - ways of behaving (acting) that are learned from others or from changes in the environment.
Add two examples of each behavior to your definitions.

Plants respond to their enviornments.
Read text pages A 104-107 to learn about plant responses.
Using words and pictures, record 3 plant responses to the environment, and why the responses help the plant meet its basic needs.
