From the Principal --

It was a super playdate for the children in Preschool through grade two. After school, everyone came down to Dr. Furrey’s classroom and enjoyed homemade donuts. They were hot and dipped in powdered sugar, or sugar and cinnamon. After everyone was filled, it was off to the Ringwood playground. Everyone had lots of fun running through the playground, climbing on the equipment and just having fun with their friends. It was so special to see students and teachers laughing, playing, and chasing each other. The special time together also gave parents an opportunity to meet each other.

There are more events planned for after the holidays. We hope to get our students together for more fun activities, and also provide the parents with an opportunity to get to know each other better.

PTF PANCAKE BREAKFAST This year’s PTF committee decided to bring back a former RCS tradition, the Pancake Breakfast. Those who have been part of the school community for a significant amount of time remember that this was a yearly event.

This year, the PTF decided to honor Ringwood community workers and veterans by providing them with a discounted ticket price. The event drew school families and community members together. The chef for the morning was Mr. Craig Matthews, a school dad, . The food was fantastic and the fellowship was great!

TALKING BEHIND PEOPLE’S BACK

It’s a bad habit and one that is so easy to fall into! I am intentionally working on not falling into that trap. Let me explain because we may not be thinking of the same thing. Are you like me? How many times have you told someone about

A person who was so helpful to you

An employee at a store that made shopping easier

A pastor whose sermon spoke to you

A thoughtful thing your child did recently

A creative activity your child’s teacher shared with the class

Why is it so easy to tell others about these things and yet neglect to tell the person who really impacted us. I have been known to call for managers in stores on a regular basis. I know the power of criticism, so I like to give good reports for employees who are going above and beyond. Generally, I try and start the conversation by apologizing for talking about the individual behind their back. You can imagine, that catches their attention quickly. Then I thank them for that special thing they did.

CHATTER 2

ESCAPE DAY Our sixth through eighth grade curriculum provides our students with a very comprehensive research writing program. As a culmination to this very involved program, we celebrate Escape Day on the day they hand in their completed paper. There are no classes, no homework, jeans are allowed, and we have plenty of fun! This year’s Escape Day took the sixth through eighth graders to Liberty Science Center. The day was packed with a variety of experiences which included watching the dissection of a cow eye, meet and greet with some animals, and lots of other fun things.

Meeting an Eel Blowing Bubble Fun for Teachers Fun Time

MISS KACHLER’S SIXTH GRADERS travelled to Ringwood Manor to learn about Revolutionary War and Victorian Era history. The first portion of the day, the students became Continental Army soldiers and marched along the path that 1770’s soldiers

took through the park. They were also able to do gravestone rubbings which revealed interesting information about individuals from the 18th and 19th century. After some lunch, the class was taken on a tour of the Manor and the Carriage House. As they walked through the hallways of the around 200-year-old home, they learned about how the Hewitt and Ryerson family spent their summer vacations in this location. It was a fascinating experience to learn about history that happened right in our backyard!

MISS BROWN’S FOURTH GRADE CLASS took an exciting trip to the Seeing Eye last Thursday! It was filled with insightful information about the facility, dogs, and burgers (lunch)! The fourth graders learned a lot about how helpful the Seeing Eye dogs are to their owners. Unfortunately, The Fourth Graders and Miss Brown had to leave all dogs behind. Thankfully, those dogs will be used to help support the blind! We are so glad to have learned so much about the Seeing Eye!

CHATTER 4

LIFE AT R.C.S. GRADE 3 - Mrs. Brown’s students were busy learning about plants. Science is filled with experiment opportunities so the class participated in an experiment that showed them the different colors present in leaves. They discovered that the fall leaves do not have many colors. There was no green that spread out from the leaf rubbing. This made a good teachable moment to understand that many leaves no longer produce chlorophyll in the fall which results in the leaves changing colors.

GRADE 5 - Mrs. Bedard’s science class was at it again! Hands-on and science go together with her. Recently, the students were checking out the life cycle of brine shrimp and other living organisms.

GRADE 1 - What happens when you mix colors together? Suppose you put blue and yellow together or red and blue together? The first graders had a hands on learning experience as they mixed colors to make new colors.

NATIONAL PICKLE DAY - We enjoyed a celebration of National Pickle Day this month. “Super Pickle” was stationed right next to our celebration sign and everyone was given a pickle spear or pickle chips to enjoy!

KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Barlow’s boys and girls were hard at work learning about teeth and dental hygiene.
