INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

7.1 Environment Consciousness

7.1.1 Does the institute conduct a green audit of its campus and facilities?

The college has no formal green audit mechanism, as the college campus area is limited. The

college however takes all possible steps to make the campus eco-friendly. The use of plastic

bags is avoided in the campus and the entire campus has been designated as “No Plastic Zone”.

maintained by the college. The college has an Eco-Club which undertakes activities relating

to environment consciousness in the college campus. The Eco-Club has recommended the

use of a compost pit in the campus. The college also has installed a Rain Water Harvesting

system to store rain water and use it for gardening. Appropriate measures are also taken

to prevent wastage of water.

7.1.2 What are the initiatives taken by the college to make the campus eco friendly?

that no electric equipments are run unnecessarily.

The corridors of the college have fluorescent tubes installed and are switched off immediately

when not required.

Computers, printers, copiers are shut off during non-working hours and are disconnected at

the end of the day.

Use of fluorescent tubes and CFL lights instead of incandescent bulbs.

 Use of renewable energy

The Eco Club of the college has planned to submit a proposal to the Department of Renewable

Rainwater is channelled to enter borewell for ground water recharging.

 Check dam construction NIL

 Efforts for Carbon neutrality

As a step towards achievement of carbon neutrality. The Eco club and NSS volunteers have

planted a number of trees in the college campus to reduce polluting emissions in the

atmosphere.

 Plantation

Students of the college plant saplings every year in and around the college campus. The NSS

volunteers plant trees and volunteer to maintain them.

 Hazardous waste management

Hazardous waste is segregated and disposed according to the norms prescribed by the Health

department and civic bodies. The College is planning to construct deep pits for the disposal

7.3 Best Practices

7.3.1 Elaborate on any two best practices in the given format at page no. 98, which have

contributed to the achievement of the Institutional Objectives and/or contributed to

the Quality improvement of the core activities of the college.

Best Practice I

1. Title of the Practice is Pranayama and Yoga classes.

2. Goal

Yoga and pranayama can prepare students physically and mentally for the integration

of their physical, mental and spiritual faculties. Regular practice of Yoga helps develop

the body and mind bringing in a lot of health benefits. Pranayama brings harmony

between the body, mind and spirit, making one physically, mentally and spiritually strong.

Yoga education can enhance the overall development of the students. Yoga and pranayama

techniques provide improved attention in studies, better stamina and a heightened

awareness and balanced attitude towards life.

3. The Context

The practice of Yoga for the student should be progressive – from easy to difficult

and an ideal number for each Yoga class is 20 students. As more students get enrolled,

more faculty would be needed to handle the Yoga sessions. Due to the large numbers

in Yoga class, the teachers lose contact with the students. The teacher also should have

a deep experience of the concept of yoga to teach the students. The teacher should

first be trained and motivated to understand the needs of the students.

Page 74: Infrastructure and Learning Resources · INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES ... Kho Kho, Badminton, Kabbadi and Cricket are played in the spacious play area in front of the college

#

4. The Practice

The idea is to evolve a holistic education delivery system by combining yoga with direct

experience of the subject taught. Pranayama aims primarily at the control of the mind.

When the mind is under control, emotional disturbance can be controlled. This can help

the students to concentrate on their studies. Yoga education can be integrated into

education by creating a proper atmosphere for its study and practice. This would require

many sessions instilling core learning, skill learning, concentration, and relaxation, self-

reliance. A dedicated and dynamic teacher can create an atmosphere for learning.

5. Evidence of Success

The Yoga Modules are on the areas of Eyesight, Hearing, Memory, Concentration,

Physical stamina, Anger, Ego, Civic sense, and National Awareness. This resulted in

increasing the pass percentage among students with many first classes. Students have

also realized the value and importance of education for their overall development. The

number dropouts have come down drastically. The students have developed a sense

of integrity and student participation in all activities have greatly increased.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

As the Yoga modules progress, the yoga teacher has to acquire skills of a counselor

for the problems the student faces at the psychological level of his/her personality. The

teacher has to be trained to update his knowledge skills. The ideal Yoga class should

have around 20 students. As more number of students are interested, more faculty would

be needed to handle the sessions. Fund mobilization to organize events is another major

problem for the college.

Best Practice – II

1. Title of the Practice :Integrating extra-curricular activities with the academic

excellence to focus on the overall personality development of the students

2. Goals

The college has integrated co-curricular activities and academic excellence to bring out

the hidden potential of individual students. This would facilitate smooth transition from

college campus to the job market. The integrated activities provide students with

Page 75: Infrastructure and Learning Resources · INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES ... Kho Kho, Badminton, Kabbadi and Cricket are played in the spacious play area in front of the college

#

exposure to the socio cultural environment and develop a sense of belongingness. This

would help further develop in students’ values like leadership skills and organizational

abilities.

3. The Context

Hoskote consists of 5 Hoblis. Agriculture, Apiculture and horticulture are primary

occupations of people here, although recently industrialization has thrown up new

opportunities for the people. The extension programmes place emphasis on gender

equality, women empowerment and dignity, social justice, cleanliness, community service,

peace, harmony and eco-friendliness. Emphasis is placed on personal development,

which includes creating awareness on hygienic behavior, reducing alcoholism, smoking

and substance abuse. These activities make them identify their strengths, weaknesses

and become aware of social problems. It also creates awareness of the Government

Welfare schemes among the students and the community.

4. The Practice

The extension programme is part of the extracurricular practices of the college. The

NCC students conduct meticulous surveys to identify the nearby villages and draft viable

plans .Thereafter activities are undertaken by the students with the co-operation of the

villagers for their development. The student volunteers are divided into groups to take

up different tasks which are accomplished by the end of their study in the college. Student

volunteers conduct awareness programmes through street plays to create awareness

on various issues.

The group conducts literacy programmes, non-formal education, readmitting dropouts

and encouraging people to watch educational programmes. Each group executes its plan

according to the nature and convenience of its resources.

5. Evidence of Success

Awareness programmes are conducted for the local community for their empowerment.

The services of GFGC Hoskote have yielded satisfactory results owing to their selfless

service. The outcome of the extension activities include creation of good rapport with

the village leaders and the people, thereby helping create healthy and pollution - free

villages. The programmes have enabled people to avail the Government welfare schemes

like widow’s pension, Aadhar card, ID for the differently-abled etc. The volunteers of

Page 76: Infrastructure and Learning Resources · INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES ... Kho Kho, Badminton, Kabbadi and Cricket are played in the spacious play area in front of the college

#

the college have spread awareness of fatal diseases like AIDS and T.B. and helped

villagers tackle health hazards by maintaining good health and hygiene. This activity has

also helped eradicate illiteracy by encouraging the school dropouts for readmission at

schools.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

There are some problems in implementing this practice due to the high cost involved

in field activities. The college receives funds from the university which greatly helps in

conducting extension activities and promoting this practice. The college also partially

seeks local sponsorship to implement the extension activities to the fullest. Apart from

funds, allocating sufficient time for student interaction with villagers sometimes becomes

a constraint as they have to attend their classes. However, the college encourages and

appreciates such activities.
