The Philosophy of Libraries • Libraries are social organizations and they should maintain their
basic character • Should not forget their Human Face / Human Touch in pursuit of
modernization...• Societies keep changing and their lifestyles too… and so does
Libraries.• The CORE of Libraries’ Principles, Philosophies, Missions and
Roles SHOULD remain, while the MEANS, WAYS, and TOOLS keep changing.
• Library Science as a Subject of Study and Discipline takes care of, and is concerned about all other subjects including the emerging ones… an Umbrella approach.
• Professionals need to know something about everything….• The Challenge – Balancing the Breadth and the Depth…• Options enjoyed by the previous/ senior professionals Vs the
Imperatives of the New Gen.• Harnessing the Power of Technology – Courtesy : Darwin -
Survival of the Smarts• Patron is the King …. Welcome him aboard – by hook or crook
• “Knowledge has become the key economic resource and the dominant - and perhaps even the only source of competitive advantage."
- Peter Drucker

Future Libraries? What is a library and what should it be in 2012, 2020 and beyond…
• What does the academic library of the future look like? • Where do its walls begin and end? • On campus? • On our desktop? • At home? • Does it still have a function as a separate and distinct
space? • Or has it become the first step to an all-virtual future?• Libraries have never been more interesting, difficult and
challenging…
Challenges of the DayRelevance of Libraries in the Google Era Retention of Users, especially the New Gen Proliferation of ContentDiverse Datastreams - Content Categories, Publication TypesMultimedia, Multiformats, MultilingualCollection Building – Acquisition, Subscriptions, Licensing…Copyright, Intellectual Property, Fair Use…
Technology Complexities, Infrastructure Issues
Publishers’ Stringent Policies / Monopolies
Integration of legacy systems and the new genre
• User Generated Internet Content:– Blogs– YouTube– MySpace
• And the same is TRUE with Scholarly Communication too!!
Magic of the Web
• The universe (which others call the Web) is the placewhere society keeps the sum total of human knowledge. It's where we learn and play, shop and do business, keep up with old friends and meet new ones ...
• Today we stand at the epicenter of a revolution in how society creates, organizes, locates, presents, and preserves information ...
• .... It's all the Web ....
Ian Witten et al. in "Web Dragons"
Google Syndrome
• Can we assume that a search engine will – intrinsically – teach how to find, manage and interpret information ??

Social Trends in LIS
• 2010 top ten trends in academic libraries
• The ACRL Research, Planning and Review Committee, responsible for advising the academic librarianship and higher education developed a list of the top ten trends that are affecting academic libraries now and in the near future.
• This list was compiled based on an extensive review of current literature and based on an e-mail survey that was sent to 9,812 ACRL members in February 2010.
Social Trends in LIS
• Academic library collection growth is driven by patron demand and will include new resource types
• Budget challenges will continue and libraries will evolve as a result
• Changes in higher education will require that librarians possess diverse skill sets
• Demands for accountability and assessment will increase
• Digitization of unique library collections will increase and require a larger share of resources
Social Trends in LIS…..• Explosive growth of mobile devices and applications
will drive new services
• Increased collaboration will expand the role of the library within the institution and beyond
• Libraries will continue to lead efforts to develop scholarly communication and intellectual property services
• Technology will continue to change services and required skills
• The definition of the library will change as physical space is repurposed and virtual space expands
Information Strategy TipsContext = Scenarios, Paradigms
Constant = Change
Technology = Facilitate, and NO intimidate
Information = The Big Picture - Landscape
Information Ownership X Access to Information
Collection = ONLINE + ONSITE and NOT ALL ONSITE
Content = Aggregate, Integrate
Service = Create Values, Markup and Market
Capital = Human, Tacit, Values, and Users
Content Management
• Key issue (challenge & opportunity) today in most enterprises
• Why?– Wide variety of web-enabled digital content – Web enabling of businesses – Digital publishing
• Most authoring tools support saving in web compatible formats
– Ease of web publishing and hosting– Need for integrating internal and external content
What is Content Management?Technologies, standards, principles and practices related to:
Content creation, capturing, publishingOrganization and storageSearch, retrieval and deliveryPreservation

Strategy Facets - for an excellent hybrid ambience
1. Value and Preserve the Traditional Systemswhile Embracing Technology for Development
2. Aggregation / Integration Strategies3. Library Automation (integration of the traditional
library activities/collection)4. Digital Library (creation of efficient information
systems using digital collections for effective browse, search, retrieval and long-term preservation)
5. OA Archives (pooling the organization’s intellectual capital)
6. Library Portal (seamless integration of the organization’s entire knowledge base—traditional, paper as well as electronic technologies)
7. Consortium Approach to Library Subscriptions
Strategic Planning• How to map / scale (assess) the information
needs / requirements of the Organization • How to Communicate this to the Management• How to build infrastructure – Planning, Execution • How to Collect, Consolidate, Build and Preserve
Local Content• How to build E-Resources / Published Content• Information Literacy to Information Professionals• Information Literacy for Users
