The Indian Institute of Packaging is a nationalenterprise set up in 14th May, 1966 by the IndianPackaging and allied industry and the Ministry ofCommerce, Government of India.

The Institute's endeavor is to improve thestandards of packaging needed for the promotionof exports and help to create infrastructuralfacilities for overall packaging improvement inIndia throughout it’s various activities.

The activities of the Institute today are bench-marked with those of leading packaging institutesthe world over.

The Institute is closely linked with internationalorganizations. It is recognized by the UNIDO(United Nations Industrial DevelopmentOrganization) and the ITC (International TradingCentre) for consultancy and training. The IIP is amember of the Asian Packaging Federation(APF) the Institute of Packaging Professionals(IOPP), USAthe Institute of Packaging (IOP), UK,Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry(TAPPI), USA and World Packaging Organization(WPO).

The services of the Institute include Training &Education,Consultancy&Project,LaboratoryTesting,Quality Evaluation, Exhibition & Design, Informationand Publication, Library, Database Services,National and International Awards for Packagingexcellencebesidespromotionalactivities.

The Biggest Opportunity in the Packaging industry

The packaging industry has its influence on all industriesdirectly or indirectly. Currently the Indian packagingindustry is worth USD 24.6 billion and with a growth rate ofabove 15% per annum it is one of the fastest growing. Overthe next couple of years this growth rate is expected todouble. India's per capita packaging consumption is lessthan worldwide average which offers a mammoth businessopportunity to entrepreneurs.

The large and fast growing Indian middle class populationand the growth of organized retail sector are the catalysts togrowth in packaging. The Indian middle class population isabove 50 million and is expected to reach 583 million by2025. (Source:McKinseyReport)

The Indian retail market is the 5th largest retaildestination globally and has been ranked the secondmost attractive emerging market for investments. Thismarket is currently valued at US$ 511 billion and isexpected to rise to US$ 1.3 trillion by 2018. (Source:www.ibef.org)Packaging of essential products like food, beverage, milk,vegetable, food grains and pharmacy are the key drivingsegmentsbecause of the huge domestic consumption.

India's imports at 20-25% with a value of $ 125 million ofits total packing machinery indicate further opportunitiesnot only for Indian companies to increase their share indomestic market but also for International companies toexplore new business opportunities in India.
