chi Alpha update and vision for the futureby Jeff Alexander, Indiana Chi Alpha Director

More in this issue: See pages 11-14 for a special look at Indiana Chi Alpha

As we begin our sixth year, Sara and I want to thank Superintendent Don Giff ord, our Indiana pastors and churches, and our Great Lakes Area Directors Steve and Belkis Lehmann, for allowing us to serve Indiana and Chi Alpha (XA) as the district directors. Th e resurrection of Chi Alpha Campus Ministries in Indiana began several years before our arrival in 2008 as the newly appointed Indiana District XA Directors. In 2006, our area director, Steve Lehmann, moved his family to Indiana to reestablish XA in the state. With a vision for the expansion of XA onto new campuses, Supt. Don Giff ord entrusted Steve Lehmann to reset and rebuild XA in Indiana. Shortly thereaft er, Steve approached me about leaving Ohio State University in order to become the district director in Indiana.

Thankful for God’s blessing and the hard work of XA leaders and staff

June 9-11 of 2008, at the Indiana XA Staff Retreat, a humble, but determined small group of XA staff (four from Linda Seiler’s Purdue team and three church volunteers) gathered with our area team to pass the district leadership baton to the loud, and perhaps overly energetic, new full-time Indiana XA District Director, Jeff Alexander and his wife Sara. Armed with a mandate from the Lord “to bring our fi ve loaves and two fi shes” to Jesus to allow Him to multiply the resources, we began to pray and to dream about seeing XA groups launched across the state. With XA’s checkered past in Indiana still in the collective memory of most pastors, we committed ourselves to seeing XA started on the top 25 campuses in Indiana. We committed ourselves to being ministries that depended upon the power of the Holy Spirit to change students and to invest in discipleship. As the new leader of the district XA program, I challenged us to: 1) commit to being a team (no silos); 2) to raise full budgets before starting; and 3) to pioneer with a team. Th at being said, I attribute the growth of XA over the last few years to the simple multiplication of the “fi sh and loaves” by the Father who desires to reach lost students more than we can understand. As we fi nish the affi liation of staff and the chartering of XA on campuses for the 2014-15 school year, XA is now touching 25 campuses with over 45 affi liated staff .

Indiana XA in the next fi ve years

As I pray and plan for the next fi ve years, I take note of the warning in John 9:4, “[We] must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.” (NASB) Our culture is quickly changing. As we look forward, we must prepare for the rapidly increasing eff ects of a post-modern, post-Christian America.

1) We need local churches to be invested, involved with, and leading XA ministries. We have 125 colleges and universities in Indiana. If you have a small college or community college near your church, let’s partner together to start a XA ministry on your campus. Goal: 5-10 new church sponsored XA ministries within the next fi ve years.

2) We need more XA workers. Many XA directors are being stretched too thin as they serve multiple campuses, or they are serving with an inadequate staff team. We need to raise up the next generation of staff from our churches and our XA ministries. Goal: 25 new XA staff in Indiana through promoting and developing the Indiana Campus Missionary in Training Program (CMIT). Full capacity is 10-12 CMIT’s each year. Alumni from XA must help with funding XA missionaries.

Chi Alpha has a presence on 25 campuses, but we need to become more established and mature in order to be more eff ective. We must continue to learn, adapt and grow in order to accomplish the mission of taking the Gospel to every student and every campus. XA ministries need to focus on being Spirit-empowered, missional discipleship communities that desire to engage every part of their university or campus with the Gospel of Christ. As we continue to gather and disciple students (the percentage of incoming Christians is declining each year), we must mobilize as a “sent people” to those who are increasingly unlikely to encounter Christ through visiting a XA ministry. In obedience to Christ’s mandate in John 20:21, “So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’”

Th e Indiana District ministry family has been a second family to me that has oft en been much more present in support and ministry to myself and my daughters than our natural family because of proximity. Th is ministry family has been of tremendous support to me over the past two years in the journey that began with the loss of Joyce and the massive transitions in life and ministry. I am thankful to have been in a safe place with safe people. I am whole today because of the grace of God and the support of His people. On September 13, we will add a member to the Indiana ministry family when I wed Donna Amsler Collins, Lord willing. Donna is a PK. She was raised in an Assemblies of God church in Quincy, Illinois. Her dad has been a presbyter in the Illinois district for 38 years. Among their many ministry assignments, Donna and her husband, Dave, served in the Illinois district offi ce, as AGWM missionaries in Brussels, Belgium, and later they both worked for the U.S. State Department in South Africa and Nigeria. She has four adult children, Danelle, Daniel, Deanna, and David. My marriage to her makes me an instant grandpa to her granddaughter, Eloise. Not only have we found commonality in faith and ministry, but in tragedy. On April 28, 2013, Dave tragically lost his life in a drowning accident in Nigeria. Donna nearly lost her life as

well. We are grateful to God for bringing us together on this journey and knitting our hearts together. I thank the Lord for my girls, Kelly and Ashley.

Over the last couple of years I’ve watched them step up and demonstrate great courage. I do wish the work God has done in their lives could have emerged from easier circumstances, but I am proud of the work God has done in their lives. Th eir momma would be very proud of them, and I am thankful for their love and support. Sometimes we face hurt and pain from which we think we will never recover. Sometimes we walk through the dark night of the soul, and we wonder if God is even paying attention. In this life we will face hardship and at times it will feel as though we will snap in two and never recover. Th ere are other times when we see the hand of God, clearly and we are thankful for the extraordinary joy he has brought into our lives. In good times and in bad, we will praise the Lord for He is good. His mercies endure forever. Bless the Lord, oh my soul! Th ank you again, Indiana ministry family! Th e journey continues, and I am glad we are walking together!

Welcome, Donna!The Journey Continues

North judson satellite Grand opening We are excited to share the news of the grand opening of North Judson Heartland Christian Center satellite campus on Sunday, July 6. Families gathered together as they connected live to the main campus in Valparaiso to participate in worship and engage in a powerful message from Dr. Phil Willingham. Th ey had an incredible service with two individuals accepting Christ as their Savior during the altar call. We look forward to the hearing more about the continued ministry at the North Judson campus as they share Christ by being real, relevant and relational.

The journey ChurchAvon Campus Launched Th e Journey Church in Plainfi eld launched its fi rst multi-site campus on Easter Sunday, this past April. Th ere were 91 in attendance for the launch service. Th e church began by meeting in the Avon South Middle School but has since secured, through the partnership of Indiana Advance, a facility in the Prestwick area of Avon near the center of the population base of Hendricks County. Multiplying out of the original campus has produced unique challenges and opportunities. Th e Journey Church is a Church Life church, which makes an incredible diff erence meeting those challenges, and is endeavoring to reach the 151,000 people of Hendricks County on its mission of Loving God, Creating Community, Serving Others, and Restoring Hope. Four months into this campus plant, the church is averaging 75 in attendance and has a wonderful spirit and drive to grow the Kingdom of God. Plans for the new facility include a coff ee shop/venue, hosting home-school groups and aft er-school programs for kids as well as Upward basketball leagues, soccer leagues, an indoor play place, athletic based groups for adults, 12-step recovery programs, Financial Peace University, etc. Th e hope is the facility will be as much a center for the community at large to gather and utilize, as it is used for a church facility. Th e Journey Church plans to launch three to four additional Church Life based campuses around Hendricks County over the next fi ve years.

Young men from across Indiana gathered in June for a weekend of fun and spiritual purpose as they were challenged to be the ultimate hero with hearts sold out to Christ, while purposefully setting out on a journey to change the world for our Savior. At Rangerfest, these young men took part in many competitions such as the home run derby, .22 caliber rifl e target shooting, JBQ standoff , and many more! Tristan Heyde, lead pastor of Wabash Calvary and his band led worship, and Marvin “Sarge” Summers was our special guest speaker. Auburn Souls Harbor took home the overall competition championship this year. Indiana Junior Leadership Training Academy just completed during the last weekend of July with an awesome time of learning to be young men of faith and leaders in our local outposts, schools and churches. Our guest speakers were Indiana Ranger Commander Mike Holbrook and Mikel Stull of Auburn Souls Harbor, and worship was led by Nathan Grubbs of Fort Wayne First. We had special prayer for Stan Sinclair of Cayuga Assembly

and Charles Lee of Franklin First Assembly. Th eir combined years of ministering to boys equals nearly a century of service. Th eir ministries have produced countless disciples who are now winning souls for the Kingdom and are serving the body of Christ as Godly men. It was a powerful moment as the boys laid hands on these men in prayer!

Indiana School of Ministry (ISOM) launches sixth year This summer, ISOM has enrolled 108 students for the fi rst class in August. We are truly astounded at how the Lord continues to add to this ministry! Statistics for district schools of ministry across the nation indicate that by the sixth year of operation, our ISOM should only be enrolling approximately 70 students, and yet, our enrollment numbers continue strong and remain well over that fi gure. Undoubtedly, the Lord is drawing men and women to attend ISOM as a way to fulfi ll His call on their lives. This is very exciting to the ISOM team! We fi nished our fi fth year strongly with over 74 students who completed one level or certifi cate program over the course of the year. This picture shows our graduates from the fi nal class last

year. We are very proud of each of the 74 graduates’ accomplishments. We would love for you to join us, whether it’s for one class, an entire level, or certifi cate track. For more information, please contact the ISOM Coordinator, Toni Mosburg, at [email protected].

Th ank you Indiana family for all your prayers and support! We especially want to thank Pastor Don Giff ord, and Dan and Laura Pongratz for all their encouragement and assistance along the way. Yet, we desire to express our most sincere gratitude for every Indiana District church that continues to send and partner with new Indiana missionaries. With all the pulls of missional needs from so many areas, we truly appreciate our Indiana churches that so oft en sacrifi cially send and support Indiana missionaries. During our AMM meetings, Pastor Don shared a thought that made an incredible impression on us. As we recall, Pastor Don shared that, while he was pastoring his church, an elder came to him suggesting that they should scale back on inviting missionaries to minister during their building construction. However, Pastor Don said that they would do just the opposite and have more missionaries!! To us, this was truly a faith-fi lled and inspiring thought from our pastor. Again, on behalf of the Chappel family, and all our Indiana Missionaries, we would like to say THANK YOU for your faithful partnerships and most certainly your prayers as your hands are extended through us take the gospel to where it’s never gone before! - Th e Chappel’s

Indiana District family, I want to say ‘Th ank You!’ I realize that, in light of the magnitude of your generosity to us, a simple thank you is not enough. But, it is all we have to off er. Th ank you for opening your pulpits, wallets, and hearts to us. You have allowed us to share our burden for South Africa, and partnered with us in prayer and fi nances. As we return to South Africa, please know that we need your support more than ever. We will do our best to represent Indiana well as we strive to build the church in South Africa by raising up prepared leaders. May the Lord richly bless you for your generosity, and may the seeds you have sown in us return to you in eff ective ministry. Tsalla Sentle (stay well)!

What a transformational time we had at camp this summer! Once again, I would like to say thanks to all those who had a role in making our “Called to Duty” teen camps a huge success this year! In comparing with the past, we had unprecedented numbers that came out of our altar results this year. During our four weeks of teen camp, we saw 409 students commit their lives to Christ; 496 baptized in the Holy Spirit; 183 healings; and 120 called into full time ministry, PTL! Combined with the kids camp results, we rejoice with over 700 students who committed their lives to Christ, and another 700+ who were baptized in the Holy Spirit! We truly thank God for the powerful, life-changing encounters that takes place through our camping ministry at Lake Placid each year. We pray God’s richest blessings upon all those who are instrumental in making Indiana Camps what they are!

Pastor Jeremy Turner and Kirklin Assembly of God was one of four local churches who participated in a “Hero Day” at their community’s “Kirk’s Crossing” festival, on Sunday, June 29. The event was sparked by Kent Anderson and the Rural Compassion ministry. Rural Compassion helped us purchase police and fi re fi ghter Bibles with their name and badge number etched on each. We presented 17 Bibles to our volunteer fi re department, and presented a check to them for over $2,200. They were very much appreciative and surprised by the generous donations of all four churches. The fi re chief was so elated when we presented the check.

Pastor Don and Diane Gifford presented Pastor Illis Pérez a new Bible in honor of her recent ordination. As pastor of the Roca de Salvación church out of Fort Wayne First Assembly, Pérez has about 100 congregants. They have built a strong worship team and are raising up young people for ministry. Already, Pastor Pérez has two ladies who are being trained for ministry, and who have recently received credentials through the Assemblies of God: Blanca N. Sanches and Clara Barrios. Great job, Pastor Illis Pérez!

July 12, 2014 Pastor Tom Paino celebrated his 90th birthday at Indianapolis Lakeview Church. Pastor Tom was ordained in 1945, the last year that Ohio and Indiana were a district together. On Sunday, July 13, Pastor Tom preached both services at Lakeview, led hymns and sang a special. He preached with anointing and passion. Pastor Tom and Lois continue to travel with World Missions and raise approximately one million dollars a year for missions. Thank you, Pastor Tom Paino, for a life well-lived, for carving out a path that others can walk on, and continuing to leave a legacy!

Sunday, June 8, Pastor Mike Marsh and the Princeton Oasis Assembly of God’s congregation dedicated a $1.2 million Family Life Center. The church has grown from one building in the 1970s to a campus today. The new Family Life Center includes a fellowship hall which can double as a venue for Upward Bound sports programs. A mezzanine area, above the main fl oor, is designed so people can meet and socialize, play board games, and for other family and youth activities. The church’s youth program now has a new home in the former church sanctuary on Stormont Street, just across the alley from the new Family Live Center.
