Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experi- ence. I had cut back on nonessential obli- gations, extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspend- ing. Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true mean- ing of Christmas. My son, Nicholas, was in kindergar- ten that year. It was an exciting season for a six-year-old. For weeks, he’d been memorizing songs for his school’s “Win- ter Pageant.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’d be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there’d be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise. So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song. Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as Christmas, I didn’t expect anything other than fun, commercial entertain- ment — songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. When my son’s class rose to sing, “Christmas Love,” I was slightly taken aback by its bold title. Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in their best for the show. The children in the front row cen- ter stage held up signs with large letters, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing “C is for Christmas,” a child would hold up the letter C. Then, “H is for Happy,” and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, “Christmas Love.” The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter “M” upside down! She was totally unaware her letter “M” ap- peared as a “W.” The audience of 1st through 6th grad- ers snickered at this little one’s mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her “W.” Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter contin- ued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, and why we celebrated the holiday in the first place. Why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities. When the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear: “C H R I S T W A S L O V E” And, I believe, He still is. Amazed in His presence, Humbled by His love. Each December, I vowed to makeChristmas a calm and peaceful experi-ence. I had cut back on nonessential obli-gations, extensive card writing, endlessbaking, decorating, and even overspend-ing. Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious familymoments, and of course, the true mean-ing of Christmas.

My son, Nicholas, was in kindergar-ten that year. It was an exciting season fora six-year-old. For weeks, he’d beenmemorizing songs for his school’s “Win-ter Pageant.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’dbe working the night of the production.Unwilling to miss his shining moment, Ispoke with his teacher. She assured methere’d be a dress rehearsal the morningof the presentation. All parents unable toattend that evening were welcome tocome then. Fortunately, Nicholasseemed happy with the compromise.

So, the morning of the dress rehearsal,I filed in ten minutes early, found a spoton the cafeteria floor and sat down.Around the room, I saw several otherparents quietly scampering to their seats.

As I waited, the students were led intothe room. Each class, accompanied bytheir teacher, sat cross-legged on thefloor. Then, each group, one by one, roseto perform their song.

Because the public school system hadlong stopped referring to the holiday asChristmas, I didn’t expect anythingother than fun, commercial entertain-ment — songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. When myson’s class rose to sing, “Christmas

Love,” I was slightly taken aback by itsbold title.

Nicholas was aglow, as were all of hisclassmates, adorned in their best for theshow. The children in the front row cen-ter stage held up signs with large letters,to spell out the title of the song.

As the class would sing “C is forChristmas,” a child would hold up theletter C. Then, “H is for Happy,” and onand on, until each child holding up hisportion had presented the completemessage, “Christmas Love.”

The performance was goingsmoothly, until suddenly, we noticedher; a small, quiet, girl in the front rowholding the letter “M” upside down! Shewas totally unaware her letter “M” ap-peared as a “W.”

SNAKES ALIVE

Just wanted to brag on Jesus…As a result of a successful V.B.S.

this past summer (with theLinvilles) we started a juniorChurch ministry to keep the com-munity kids jazzed about Je-sus—it’s been going great! We’vebeen averaging about 25 to 30 kidseach week. Halloween weekendwe were able to connect with theirparents too! After morning wor-ship we had a Junior Church Harvest Party—that included lunch, carnival gamesand snakes! I’ll explain about the snakes in a minute. First, let me tell you the goodnews. We had 67 in attendance—Kids, Moms, Dads, Grandparents (mostly out-siders) and workers. We had 96 in church that morning (praise God) but the partywas a separate event—strictly for the junior “Churchers” and families.

This event helped us to make that first real contact with moms & dads. We had agreat time! New friendships were made! And Jesus was promoted! What elsecould we ask for?

Now, about the snakes...We invited Rick Teepen of the Creation Museum’s“Snakes Alive” show to come and share with us his presentation. He was an awe-some voice for Jesus! The show was the icing on the snake—so to speak! Kidsloved it! Parents loved it! My wife—not so much! Ha!

I highly recommend Rick by the way. What a unique ministry he has. His pre-sentation (which includes his testimony, the gospel and creation apologetics) wasabout 2 hours long, and the kids were hissing for more. Truly a wonderful time!

WHAT MAKES A GREAT SUNDAY SCHOOL

CLASS OR SMALL GROUP?Recently I was privileged to attend a Sunday School class at Forest

Hills Wesleyan. The teacher was Mr. Ken McCool. That Sunday wewere studying about Nebuchadnezzar and the three Hebrews throwninto the fiery furnace (Daniel 3). In my humble opinion, Bro. Ken did agreat job for the following reasons:He had studied the lesson well enough so he could keep eye contact

with the class as he taught. I have seen some teachers read from the

quarterly the whole class time which causes religious insomnia!

He encouraged students to participate by answering his prepared

questions that he brought to class.

He kept the class moving so that we were able to get all the verses read

that went with the lesson.

He made great application throughout the lesson by pointing out

how we should react when being mistreated in everyday living for

our Christian faith.

He made a short pithy statement that I still remember to sort of sum

up the lesson. It was, “God may not keep us from the fire, but He will keep

us in the fire!”

It was evident to me that Mr. McCool took his job seriously and was

well prepared to teach his lesson. There was also a time at the begin-

ning that prayer request were taken and prayer was offered for those

attending.

Since it was in the Family Life Center, we also enjoyed coffee and do-nuts which was enjoyed.

Teacher, how is your class? Is there something you can learn fromthese observations that could help you?

Dr. Mark
