The match started with a flourish for Bangladesh, when North in closed room found the only lead to beat 4S. Both the rooms reached 4S and in open room the Indian North led the DQ, won by South with Ace. Now also the chance of going down was there, if South leads a heart but he led the club and the contract had no problems. In closed room, the Bangladesh North led the HA and took his ruff when partner encouraged. That was one down and 10 IMPs to Bangladesh.

North gave preference to diamonds and South raised to game in diamonds.

On a spade lead from West, the contract would have gone 2 down but defenders led the trump and declarer after taking out trumps played the spades restricting his losers to 2 spades and a ckub going one down.

In the closed room, East after showing good support in hearts raised his partner’s 3H to 4H, which became the final contract.

North led the CQ and South won with the Ace and after cashing DA played back the club, declarer winning with Ace. Now when declarer played the HA, the bad break in hearts was found but it was not to the disadvantage of the declarer, who finessed the queen and just gave one more club to make the contract and India gained 11 IMPs.

Open Room:

West North East South Pass Pass 1H Pass 1NT All Pass West led his 4th best spade and declarer went up with the King and played back a diamond. When East played low the trick was won in dummy with the Jack and now if clubs are played correctly, 7 tricks were guaranteed. However, South after winning the DH, played HT and rolled it, East winning with the queen. SQ was cashed and another spade returned. The contract is down now with defenders having 4 spades, 2 hearts and DA. But West helped them, when after cashing spades, he returned the clubs allowing the contract to be made.

Closed Room:

West North East South Pass Pass 1H Pass 1NT Pass 2C DBL 3C 3S All Pass After North bid 2C over the forcing NT from partner, East doubled 2C as takeout of clubs and West came out with the bid of 3S. There are 2 losers each in minors and the contract depends on spade & heart finesse working. As the cards lie, spade finesse was off but the contract was allowed to make as North tried the stunt of leading his SK. With heart finesse working the contract was made for a gain of 6 IMPs to India.

The bidding in the open room was sweet and simple. But in closed room, the Bangladesh NS overbid to the hilt. Bidding a slam with trump queen missing and no heart King was not the doctor ordered. Mainly it was overbidding by South who cue bid with poor values in spade & diamonds. The contract had chance of making only if spades are divided 3-3 with queen falling and heart finesse working and being 3-3. Though hearts behaved and SQ also fell but after diamond lead there was no way to enjoy the hearts as 4th heart was ruffed and diamond could not be ruffed in dummy. The contract went one down for another 11 IMPs loss to Bangladesh.

CLOSED ROOM: West North East South Pass Pass 1S Pass 1NT Pass 2C Pass 2S All Pass

In the open room, after 2 passes, South knowing his partner to have points balanced with 3H, which became the final contract. West led the DJ and declarer won with Ace and played 3 rounds of hearts to be in dummy and now played a diamond. East hopped up with DK and played SK and a spade back. Declarer had no problem in claiming the rest after finessing the D9 for +170 on the board. In the closed room, EW were allowed to play in 2S as West preferred opening a light 1S on 3rd seat rather than 2S. The defence was not upto the mark and declarer was allowed to make 2S, which gave another 7 IMPs to India.

1D by East was heart and West’s 2H was good support. When 3D was bid by East (showing shortness or cue), West jumped to 4H. With SK inside, there was not much to the play and Bangladesh gained 7 IMPs when the closed room pair only bid 3H.

In the closed room, the Bangladesh NS simply bid 3NT making 9 tricks. But in open room the Indian NS bid the hand well to reach 6D.

There was no problem in the play and when the Heart finesse worked, declarer was able to make all 13 tricks for 13 IMPs gain.

INDIA won the match by 62-20.

In the Bangladesh Vs Kuwait match Bangladesh was in 6S going one down, whereas Kuwait EW went for Grand slam going 2 down for a 2 IMPs gain for Bangladesh.

But none of the 10 tables playing in the championship could reach the makeable 7H.

7H played by East is always on trump lead or spade lead you win in dummy, cash hearts and go to hand with DK, take out trumps and play another spade. Ruff the 3rd spade. Now go to dummy with DA and ruff the 4th spade making the spades good. You still have the CA entry for entering dummy.

In case of a minor suit lead, win in hand, cash dummy’s hearts now come up with the other minor King, take out trumps, play top spade, ruff a spade and enter dummy with one of the minor ace and ruff the 4th spade. You still have another minor ace for entry.

In Bangladesh Vs Kuwait match, the Bangladesh pair reached 6C and played well to make it (see Bulletin-3, page 9 for details). It is interesting to note that the contract is doomed on D6 lead from North, as partner can give ruff to North. His C10 becomes the all important card.

The Pakistan Seniors team also bid 6C against Bangladesh Seniors on the above board. In the open room.

The bidding was:

West North East South Ghias Anwer Malik Kizilbash

1D 3H 3S Pass 4C Pass 4H Pass 4S Pass 6C All Pass

Heart King was led and declarer ruffed in hand after playing low from dummy. Now low diamond to King was won by South with Ace and the contract could have been defeated now also, if a diamond is returned but South played C9 and declarer finessed the Jack. Now a diamond was played and ruffed in dummy, spade played to Queen and another diamond ruffed; heart ruffed and another diamond ruffed. Now club was played and 12 tricks taken. 1H Pass 1S Pass 2C Pass 2D Pass 3S Pass 4C Pass 4H Pass 6S All Pass The lead was a small club from West. Declarer played low from dummy and declarer won the Jack with the Ace. A low heart was played to Jack and when it held a small club played, East blundered by putting the King, which got ruffed. Declarer went to dummy with DK and discarded one diamond on CQ and the last club ruffed in dummy with S6. Now DA was cashed and a heart played to HA and another heart ruffed with S8. Now came a diamond. West was left with all the four spades (T742) and had to ruff perforce and over-ruffed in dummy. When the heart was played from dummy, East discarded a diamond and declarer ruffed with Ace and played another diamond. West had to ruff and finally only one last trick went to the opponents.

Against the odds!

The venue is the Women's Teams Competition of the Eighth World Teams Olympiad held 1996 in Rhodes. The USA ladies team, the team that had finished first in the qualifying round-robin was facing a young Bulgarian team that was fielded by the Bulgarian Bridge Federation that had been a member of the World Bridge for only about one month before the Olympiad. The American team lost the quarterfinal match to Bulgaria and was knocked out. Here is one of the hands that contributed +17 international match points to the winning team's score.

The Americans E-W bid 6 and their declarer guessed the club Queen the wrong way to go one down. The Bulgarians E-W bid 6 and their declarer set up the hearts for two club discards, she did not need the club's finesse!

What happened? All text books advice you to give preference to a 4-4 fit compared to another 5-3 fit! If you replace the heart queen with a smaller card, the club slam will have a better chance. Also, the club slam is better if you switch the diamond queen and club four.

We can conclude that the over all strength is crucial and the trump suit strength is decisive.

Here is another hand which Marwan and I played against the Egyptian team during our first round robin match in the open teams' competition of the Fifth Asia and Middle East Championships held 1989 in Cairo.

4(3) Pass 4(3) Pass

4NT(4) Pass 5(3) Pass

5(5) Pass 6(6) End

(1) Transfer

(2) Denies maximum points together with super fit in heart.

(3) Splinter but could be a Cue bid, good heart suit and shows slam interest.

(4) None or two of the three top Heart honors, the agreed upon trump suit.

(5) Denying controls of the spade suit.

(6) Yes, I have a spade stopper and the heart queen. We made 12 tricks; again, 17 imps went our way after the Egyptians went one down in their perfectly bid 6. Again, the 4-4 fit failed against the 6-2 fit in spite of all the text books recommendations! Marwan told me later that he did not show his diamonds as a second suit because it is relatively weak. We will keep on giving preference to the 4-4 fit against any other eight cards fit keeping in our mind that their are main decisive factors, the strength of both the compared suits, the over all shape and strength of both hands, the level of the contract and which hand should receive the lead.

Declarer wins our partner’s spade queen lead with the ace and exits with the diamond jack, ducking in the dummy. Let us focus on the defense plan.

SOLUTION Partner probably has the queen and jack of spades and the diamond ace. What about the suit distribution? West and South have four spades each. Where will the defensive tricks come from? The answer: Two diamonds and two spades.

Declarer’s tricks: Two spades, one heart, four diamonds and two clubs. The solution will suggest itself as soon as one realizes the consequences of the 2-2 division of diamonds in the closed hands. The only entry to the prospective diamond winners is the ace of hearts. Therefore, when West switches to a heart upon getting diamonds, declarer will not win it since by doing so he will end up losing four diamond tricks.

After cashing three heart tricks, we return to spades to gather all the tricks we have originally been entitled to.

The aforementioned play is an interesting variation of the Merrimac Coup.

The Merrimac Coup is a coup where a player (usually a defender) sacrifices a high card in order to eliminate a vital entry from an opponent’s hand (usually a dummy).
