Professor Andrew Hill On the Shoulders of GiantsThursday 9 August 2012, 5-7pm Ko Awatea Centre, Middlemore Hospital 100 Hospital Road, Otahuhu Professor Andrew Hill completed his MBChB at The University of Auckland in 1998 before undertaking a research fellowship and a Doctorate in Surgery at Harvard University in 1993 and 1994. Andrew completed surgical training in 1997 and worked in Kenya as a medical missionary before returning to work at the faculty and at Middlemore Hospital in 2002 where he now practises as a General and Colorectal surgeon, and is the Director of Research at Ko Awatea. Andrew was the recipient of a Vice Chancellor’s early career research excellence award in 2004 and a Butland Education Award in 2007. More recently he has completed a Doctorate in Education through the Faculty of Education. He is currently the Head of the South Auckland Clinical School. His research portfolio is based around improving outcomes from major abdominal surgery and medical education. In Professor Hill’s inaugural lecture, entitled “On the Shoulders of Giants”, he will describe his journey from medical student at The University of Auckland to Medical Missionary to Head of the South Auckland Clinical School. Professor Hill will interweave his extensive clinical research aimed at understanding the debilitating fatigue that patients experience after major surgery with his experience of being mentored and being a mentor.
