A SYMPHONY OF LEADERS IN SERVICE I am honored to serve as your District Six Governor for the next biennium. Having been a member of the district board for the past eight years, I have gotten to know many of you and your clubs. I am truly amazed at all of the outstanding Altrusa clubs and members across our three states. I look forward to the next two years where I will have the opportunity to get acquainted and work with even more of you. I also look forward to engaging with the newly installed board. Each board member has unique skills and experiences, and together we will be able to serve you, the district, and international as well. My major areas of focus will be strengthening clubs and the retention and recruitment of members. We are in the last two years of the current Altrusa International Strategic Plan. For those of you attending the District Conference installation banquet, the lighting of the candles during the ceremony was symbolic of what I believe we are and can continue to be. It all starts with individual clubs, and that candle was lit by Lorraine Tomlin, current president of the Muncie Club. Individual clubs and their members are the grassroots of Altrusa. As governor, I lit the middle candle representing the district. At this level we have the board and committee chairs and members who are working on behalf of all clubs. One of my goals is to have at least one member from each club serve on a District Committee. I am making progress in that regard, but there are still some openings, so if any of you are interested in district committee service, please let me know. Our two International Directors; Kathy Jackson and Chris DeVlieger, lit the large candle representing Altrusa International. Every Altrusan should be aware of all the services that International provides to the district, to clubs, and to individual members. Continuing with the musical theme of the conference—just as in an orchestra—when we all join together, we can make beautiful music. In Altrusa we work alongside each other in our clubs and at the district and international levels so that we can truly make a difference in our various communities. I suggest that we are indeed a Symphony of Leaders in Service. In closing I ask you to remember the last part of the Mamie L. A SYMPHONY OF LEADERS IN SERVICE

I am honored to serve as your District Six Governor for the next biennium. Having

been a member of the district board for the past eight years, I have gotten to

know many of you and your clubs. I am truly amazed at all of the outstanding

Altrusa clubs and members across our three states. I look forward to the next two

years where I will have the opportunity to get acquainted and work with even

more of you.

I also look forward to engaging with the newly installed board. Each board

member has unique skills and experiences, and together we will be able to serve

you, the district, and international as well. My major areas of focus will be

strengthening clubs and the retention and recruitment of members.

We are in the last two years of the current Altrusa International Strategic Plan.

Our district has made significant progress toward achieving the goals and

objectives that were established at the beginning of the last biennium. As we

move forward, the new board, along with the newly appointed committee chairs, will be tasked with making

adjustments to our District Plan to meet the challenges that we face.

For those of you attending the District Conference installation banquet, the lighting of the candles during the

ceremony was symbolic of what I believe we are and can continue to be. It all starts with individual clubs, and

that candle was lit by Lorraine Tomlin, current president of the Muncie Club. Individual clubs and their members

are the grassroots of Altrusa.

As governor, I lit the middle candle representing the district. At this level we have the board and committee chairs

and members who are working on behalf of all clubs. One of my goals is to have at least one member from each

club serve on a District Committee. I am making progress in that regard, but there are still some openings, so if

any of you are interested in district committee service, please let me know.

Our two International Directors; Kathy Jackson and Chris DeVlieger, lit the large candle representing Altrusa

International. Every Altrusan should be aware of all the services that International provides to the district, to

clubs, and to individual members.

Continuing with the musical theme of the conference—just as in an orchestra—when we all join together, we can

make beautiful music. In Altrusa we work alongside each other in our clubs and at the district and international

levels so that we can truly make a difference in our various communities. I suggest that we are indeed a

Symphony of Leaders in Service.

In closing I ask you to remember the last part of the Mamie L. Bass 12th Altrusa Principle: Altrusa believes it is not

enough to be good; Altrusa must be good for some thing.

Georgette Smith

Lexington

Elaine Wolf (Fox Valley and last year’s

recipient) presented the award to Chris

DeVlieger (on left).

Chris joined Altrusa in 2003 and has

been in leadership roles since that time.

She has served her local club and

District Six in many ways, and has

attended every District Conference

since 2003.

Her District Six leadership responsibili-

ties started as District Secretary in

2005 and she worked her way up the

ranks becoming Governor from

2015-2017.

Chris is currently a Director on the

Altrusa International Board and has

assumed committee responsibilities at

both the District and International

levels.

Chris is also a leader in her community

serving for 9 years as Chair of her

area’s Feed My Starving Children fund-

raiser among other community service.

Congratulations, Chris!

Georgette attended Lexington’s Member-

ship Soiree in March 2017 after learning

about it from their website. She joined the

club immediately following. She began her

involvement in service by attending the

International Convention in July 2017

where she signed up to serve on the

International Marketing Committee for a

two-year term.

As the 2018-2019 club year began, she

was asked and agreed to be Vice President

after slightly less than one year in the club.

She promptly created a list of speakers for

the club year.

Before joining, she had retired after 29

years with the Department of Justice

where she most recently served as

Program Manager for the Victim

Notification System (VNS).

Great Job, Georgette!

2019 COURTESY RESOLUTION

Whereas, Altrusa International of District Six is a network of

volunteers dedicated to leading to a better community.

Whereas, the board members got additional duties so that Doris

would not be left behind again.

Whereas, the members who went to the archives gave the original

principals the white glove treatment.

Whereas, conference attendees learned only beverages in Star-

bucks cups were allowed in the conference center. Who knows

what was in all those cups!

Whereas, Muncie may have started a new tradition by cutting a

ribbon to open swap and shop, silent auction and store.

Whereas, although we were thankful for the vans for the tours, we didn’t realize that step aero-

bics were included as part of the tour.

Whereas, Kathy Jackson, our International representative said she was willing to have a drink

with anyone!

Whereas, conference attendees represented 1,787 ½ years thanks to the precision of Tina from

Lexington.

Whereas, The three wise men were visited by 80 wise women.

Whereas, Ball State University President Geoffrey Mearns said in order to be successful,

“surround yourself with smart women and do whatever they tell you.”

Whereas, we learned that Tiffany from Muncie has been an Altrusan 48 hours and Mary from

Indianapolis has celebrated being an Altrusan for 54 years.

Whereas, we congratulate our new rookie of the year Georgette and celebrated Chris with the

Governor’s award.

Whereas, conversations around the fire pit turned out to be conversations around the bar.

Whereas, Kudos to Sandy Moon for having the most efficient report during the business meet-

ing.

Whereas, in the Swap and shop, the heritage information was passed out freely but baskets cost

you six for $5.

Whereas, the Cardinal conversation with the Mearns was filled with inspiration and concluded

with chirp chirp chirp!

Whereas, District Six Altrusans got fleeced and all tied up.

Whereas, Elaine crashed the millennials workshop to get someone for tech support.

Whereas, we had the opportunity to honor our Altrusa veterans during the medley of military

Whereas, Sue will be larger than life in Don’s eyes when she is making club visits and he won’t be
