THANK YOU Downtown COC!!!

So much appreciation to all who brought in school supplies

and volunteered by putting packets together and passing

out supplies. Because of your generous spirit, close to 60

students were able to start the year with school supplies.

The spirit of giving touches and changes lives!!

Thanks again for making this community outreach a

success!! Liz Campbell

Neva J. Spinks met her husband, Paul Cooper,

while he was working for Southwestern Bell in

Kermit, Texas. She became a Christian after she met Paul, who had grown

up in a Christian home. They married in 1951. After they married, Paul’s

advancement in management with Southwestern Bell required that the

growing family move several times. But when they moved to Midland in

the early 1960’s, the couple put down lasting roots. The Coopers were

blessed with five children, four of whom are still living. There also are ten

grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Though Paul’s father was a full-time school teacher, he was also a

“supply” preacher who preached for some congregation of the Church of

Christ most Sundays. After two years in the U.S. Army, part of which was

spent as part of the U.S. occupation forces in Japan, Paul attended

Abilene Christian College, graduating in 1950. He then went to work for

Southwestern Bell, retiring in 1986 after 36 years mostly spent in

management. After her children were older, Neva studied at Sul Ross

University and completed a degree in education. She is a retired educator.

Paul served as an elder for many years both at the North “A” congregation

in Midland and at the University congregation in Abilene. Because they

had grandsons who needed housing while attending ACU, the Coopers

moved to Abilene in 1994. Though Neva and Paul loved the five years

spent there, after the boys finished college the couple returned to Mid-

land, which was home to them.

Starting in 1978, Paul made fourteen short-term mission trips to India.

Neva accompanied him on two of those occasions. They have kept in

touch with many Indian and American preachers who gather for annual

India workshops. Until 2010 the Coopers continued to assist in India

missions by keeping records and disbursing funds to evangelism workers

in that country.

In retirement, Paul and Neva kept busy with Meals on Wheels delivery,

World Bible School, income tax preparation, Casa, therapy dog visits, and

many numerous other service activities both in the congregation and in

the community. In recent years Paul’s declining health has occupied much

of Neva’s life. Paul passed from this life this year in January. She says that

Paul would have been thrilled to know of the merger of the Main Street

and North “A” congregations. Her favorite Bible verse is:

Rejoice in the Lord. Philippians 4:4
