In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything,

it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved.

but, on every day use all words are understood by speakers as having indispensable hardcore of meaning.

That does not mean that there is no disagreements about the fine details of the meaning of words around the edges

The sense of an expression is its indispensable hardcore of meaning.

This definition deliberately excludes any influence of context or situation of utterance on the sense of expressions.

There are three important sense properties of sentences.,,

the property of being analytic

of being synthetic and of being contradictory

Page 3: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

is one that necessarily true as a result of the senses of the

words in it .An analytic sentence, therefore,

reflect a tacit agreement by speakers of the language about

the sense of the words in it

.

An analytic sentence

is one which is not analytic

but maybe either true or false

depending on the way the world is.

A synthetic sentence

is a sentence that is

necessary false as a result of the senses of the words in it thus a contradiction is in a way

the oppose of any analytic sentence.

Contradiction

Page 4: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

examples

that man is human

of being analytic

That man is tall

of being synthetic

That man is a woman.

of being a contradiction

for sentences has the sense property of being

Page 5: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

This animal is vegetable is a contradiction. This must be false because of the sense of

animal and vegetable.

Both of John's parents are married to aunts of mine is a contradiction, this

must be false because of the senses of both parents, married, and aunt

Page 6: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

Analytic sentences can be formed from contradictions and vice versa

How???

,by the insertion or removal, as appropriate, of the negative

particle word notNotice

synthetic sentences

are potentially informative in real-world situations

whereas

analytic sentences and contradictions are Not informative to anyone who already knows the meaning of

the words in them.

Page 7: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

,each apply to individual sentences .

Analyticity, syenthiticty and contradiction are then sense properties of the sentences.

The notions

analytic synthetic contradiction

Note the interdependence of sense relations and sense properties.

Sense properties of sentences (e.g. analyticity)

depend on the sense properties of, and sense

relations between the words they contain.

The sense relation between the predicate man and human is

known as hyponymy the sense relation between a man

and a woman is a kind of

antonymy

The sense structure of a language is like a network in which the senses of all elements are directly or indirectly related to the sense of all other

elements .

Page 8: In order to be able to talk meaningfully about anything, it is necessary to agree on the meaning of the words involved. but, on every day use all words

The sense of an expression can be the sum of its

sense properties and sense relations ,sense properties of sentences

include those of being

syntheticWith the exception of a few predicate

such as bachelor, father, square, sphere, etc. it is not

possible to give complete definitions of the sense of most predicates by sets of necessary and sufficient conditions stereotype defined in terms of typical characteristics account for the fact that people

usually agree on the meaning of the words they use.

To sum up

analytic contradiction
