Presidents Report

I counted on Thursday and there are 9 weeks to go both to the

end of the financial year and to the end of the Rotary year.

How I will miss being President of this wonderful club, it is so

strong and there are such wonderful contributors in it. The

spirit of service and fellowship is marvelous.

That spirit was very much on show at the Royal Melbourne

Golf day. Months in the planning; a dedicated team were then

all there on the day along with other members. It was a won-

derful day with bookings at capacity, and bookings and com-

mitments for next year. It was faultlessly organized.

The Lesley Falloon Perpetual Trophy (the Mayor of Sandring-

ham who inaugurated the day) for the best ladies score was

presented to our own Heather Chisholm. Well done Heather

(inaugural winner) and tremendous thanks to Lesley Falloon,

who at 95 presented the trophy and gave a speech. Lesley

was accompanied by Cr. Felicity Frederico, both of them were

very appreciative of the day and the care and consideration

shown. The Mayor, James Long presented the major trophy,

his support and that of Council generally is much appreciated.

Council was well represented with Cr. Bruce Lowe also at the

day; it is a tribute to the connections made by us with Council,

particularly Peter Flude’s liaison work.

Thanks go in particular to the committee for the golf: Jim

O’Brien, David Hone, Robert McArthur, Richard Jones, market-

er extraordinaire Peter Flude; and in no particular order Tony

Phillips, David Lea, Roger Frewen, Malcolm Sawle, Vivienne

Zoppolato, Mike Hede and especially the registration staff Pat

Seager, Maureen Flude and Jeni Beaty.

Club members contributed by playing too, thanks to those who

made up teams.

After the golf we went to Rumeah Aneka and had a cheap and

cheerful meal with lots of fun. Thanks for organizing Tony.

Tuesday was the Board meeting: Peter Flude briefed us

about the Beaumaris school and progress with the Educa-

tion Department. As he announced on Thursday, there is

$20 million in the Budget for the rebuild of the school.

This is tremendous news for us and the community, we

will still need to be following up and ensuring our future on

the site as the project develops. Heather Chisholm

briefed us on the progress she has made on the first of

what I am sure will be a few Community gardens.

Heather’s boundless enthusiasm and organizational abil-

ity have seen us joining with another club (Beaumaris

North) a community partner –the Church and already put-

ting in Grant applications. Ken and John reported that the

seeking of partner Rotary Clubs’ funds for Sabu is pro-

gressing very well. We again discussed Insurance as this

is an area where we need to ensure that the Club and

individuals are protected when we are on Club Business.

On Wednesday I went to the Cheltenham Community

Centre AGM. We were mentioned in Arna’s verbal report

about five times and the written annual report mentions us

extensively too. Our support both monetary and through

service is truly valued by this organization. They are a

model of how a Community Centre should function so it is

great to support them.

Our speaker from Bayside Council Kelly Edwards was

informative; this is a very productive partnership with their

department and I am sure we will be doing more with

them. They have the contacts to suggest young people

for RYLA so we look forward to their response to Tony on

candidates.

On Friday night, Malcolm, Ken and I went to the Presi-

dent’s meeting at Mulgrave. Apart from taking an hour to

get there because of the traffic, it was a very informative

meeting. A couple of items of note were that the District

has now Conflict resolution and Youth Protection Policies

and that the Council on Legislation has made some signif-

icant changes, including that Board Minutes should be

made available to the membership within 60 days – a

very commendable change. I will report on these further,

however this column is already long enough.

Lastly don’t forget to stand near Heather Chisholm soon;

some of her luck may rub off on you.

Yours in Rotary

Trish
