Kia ora, We have been back at school for 3 weeks as I write this newsletter. The weather has started to turn wintry and I am pleased that we have renovated some rooms, the corridors and a bathroom so we can provide warm and inviting spaces for the students. These spaces all look lovely so do take any opportunity you can to pop in and have a look. We do run tours for students and parents thinking about enrolling, on Fridays, so take the opportunity to come and look at what we have done. Bring a potential student with you. We were really pleased to get the ERO report this week. It was a really positive report and it reflects the hard work of our teachers and the wonderful students we all work with. This is an excerpt from the report and as soon as it is put up online by ERO we will attach the link for everyone to read the full report. Key strengths of the school For sustained improvement and future learner success, the school can draw on existing strengths in:

a positive school culture that responds to students’ needs, promotes their wellbeing and supports their learning success

an increasingly broad, responsive and relevant curriculum that allows for students to access meaningful pathways

culturally responsive practices that help develop identity and encourage greater student engagement in learning

the capability of its leadership to support a well-considered process of change management. The board election nominations deadline is Friday 24th May 2019 at noon. Please check your email for the nomination link but don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you need help with the nomination process. We need interested and committed parents to help us with making sure that our school is meeting the educational needs of the students. The Kelston schools are also heading into a visioning project and the board will need dedicated parents to help us make the project come to life. MY EXPERIENCE AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY

TE HUINGA WHANAU

Beatrice Seleti was awarded a Pacific on Campus Scholarship from Otago University which paid for her to travel to Dunedin on the 5th of May and spend three days exploring the campus. Here is her account of her time there:

In all honesty Auckland University was my first initial choice for university. However going to Otago really changed my mind. When we arrived we dived straight into lectures of our choice & briefings on courses which carried onto the 2nd & 3rd day. Meeting new people from other schools across New Zealand was a major highlight. It was fun as well as educational as we were able to do whatever we wanted to experience the ‘on campus’ life at Otago. I’m planning to study Health Sciences so I attended all lectures on HSFY. It was really an eye opener because they did not sugar coat anything. They stressed how hard you need to work in order to succeed. One thing that is never really is addressed at high school is failure but they openly addressed failure. However at Otago their

support system for their students is amazing. Especially for those of

Pacific Island descent. There are so many people there who can support you in all aspects of your life which made it feel like home. As many of us are scared of moving away, they welcome you warmly & make you feel like you’re at home. Academic wise there are many people at Otago who can help you and there is also a wide range of scholarships offered. One thing I took from Otago is to work exceptionally hard. Building your foundation from high school will make university easier. Overall I really loved my time in Dunedin and Otago is now my first choice.

SFX MAKEUP

HOLIDAY COURSES: SFX MAKE-UP AT CUT ABOVE ACADEMY On Monday 15th of April we attended a SFX Makeup course at Cut Above Academy. We enjoyed our time there getting to know what it’s like to work in stage make up and also getting some experiences on how to use special effects. This course was really good because it had a variety of different make up effects each of our peers could choose to work around. One of the tasks was to choose a scenario to base the makeup we’ve done and our scenario was a gang fight. This course was such an amazing experience. 87% of secondary students feel safe at school, 1 in 10 students have

been afraid that someone may hurt them. 4 out of 9 Year 9 stu-

dents report being bullied weekly or monthly.

Thirty one Year 13 Business Students are very busy preparing for their presentation at the West Auckland YES Regional Pitches. Students are working in teams and getting all the required information together to present on 23rd May at AUT Central. Five teams are taking part in this exciting event. The teams are: Coco Chains, Islenos, DreamArtzzz, Hibisciful and KODA .YES Roaming teachers and facilitators have visited our stu-dents and given them invaluable critical feedback and next steps for our pitches.

Students will be judged on the following criteria:. 1. Business Idea 2. Customer (Marketing/Promotion & Sales) 3. Production processes & Finances 4. Innovation – The Quadruple bottom line: Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental 5. Pitch presentation

I run the Waitākere Kyokushin Karate Club in Glen Eden. Currently we have 7 scholarships available for people in the Glen Eden area that could not otherwise afford to put their kids into sporting activities out of school.

100% Pizza Lunch

In week two, we celebrated a great Pizza lunch with all of

the students who had 100% attendance in Term one.

Our 2019 school goals is to gain 100% attendance, 100%

punctuality and 100% achievement. These students have

proven that you can definitely gain 100% attendance.

Special shout out to Ms Rumold’s Year 9 whanau class!

Cheehoo! They had the MOST number of students enjoying

Te Rua Taokete - Tehina

Last term we shared the inaugural Year 8 to Year 9 transition pilot for students from The Rise Up Academy in Mangere. Te RUA have approximately 100 students from Year 1 to Year 8 and only 3 Year 8 girls; Ileini Latu, Abigail Alo-Leuluai, Brianna Holloway. They attended two lessons of Year 9 English with Ms Togiatama - Otto and found that they had a really good time.

In Term Two the girls will have two sessions, Term Three they will have three and Term Four, four sessions all in English lessons.

We look forward to promoting Girl's education in West Auck-land and sharing across the Auckland region opportunities for Year 8s to experience a slice of life in secondary school.
