SamsungElectronicsCo.(005930),theworld’ssecond-largestsemiconductormaker,saiditwillgoaheadwitha$4billionexpansionofitsU.S.chipplantsinAustin,Texas,bettingonsurgingdemandforsmartphoneprocessors.

Samsungisboostingmanufacturingcapabilitiesforapplicationprocessorsandwillbeinfullproductioninthesecondhalfof2013,theSuwon,SouthKorea-basedcompanysaidinastatementtoday.

Theexpansioninso-calledlogicchipsispartofSamsung’sefforttowinnewcustomersandreduceitsdependenceonthevolatilememory-chipmarket.ThecompanyisaffirmingitsplansamidalegalfightwithAppleInc.(AAPL)--itslargestphone-processorcustomer--thathasfueledspeculationbyanalystssuchasAmitDaryananiatRBCCapitalMarketsthatApplemaygoelsewhereforsupply.

“Ourongoing,multibillion-dollarinvestmentsinAustinwillexpandourfootprintasacomprehensivesemiconductorhub,”WoosungHan,presidentofSamsungAustinSemiconductor,saidinaseparatestatement.
