Dear friends in Christ, this weekend we celebrate the liturgy of the Third Sunday of Advent (B). We light the third advent candle in our advent wreath colored rose symbolizing ‘joy’. The idea

of ‘joy’ this Third Sunday of Advent takes as its overwhelming theme comes from the Entrance

Antiphon of this mass: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near.” This

antiphon is quoted from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, chapter 4, verses 4-5.

Let us say something about the liturgical color ‘rose’. Many people mistakenly call this color

pink. This color happens to be used twice in our liturgy throughout the year, during Advent and Lenten season. Why the color ‘rose’?

To understand better the meaning of the liturgical color “rose”, we need to know first a particular liturgical principle expressed by a certain author named Dr. Pius Parsch:

"Nature's annual cycle is characterized by two phenomena, light and life. Out of the

darkness of night comes light; out of death comes life. The transition from night to

light characterizes the winter season; the transition from death to life is proper to

summertime. The holy year of the Church is likewise divided into two phases which

have similar characteristics." [Parsch, Dr. Pius. The Church's Year of Grace. Collegeville, Minnesota:

The Liturgical Press, 1962: p.169]

Br. Hyacinth Marie Cordell, OP, reflects on this idea of Dr. Pius. He said, “Nature and the mysteries of our salvation coincide. The dark color of violet in Advent harmonizes well with the

diminishing sunlight late in the year, and in Lent with the silence of life through Winter leading up to Spring. In both cases, we see a parallel. Just as darkness gives place to light at the turn of the Winter

Solstice and death to life at the beginning of Spring, so the violet of Advent gives place to the bright white of Christmas joy, and of Lent to the brightness of Easter life.” [https://catholicexchange.com/why-gaudete]

Gaudete Sunday, as it is also called, gives us the opportunity to pause for a while and reflect on

the fact that the messiah is just around the corner. In just a little more than a week we are going

to celebrate again the anniversary of the birth of our savior. The liturgy today invites us to re-joice and ponder on the immensity of this mystery with renewed hope that everything that is

happening around us will have its proper end and life will be back on track with full force.

Indeed, let us rejoice in the Lord always. Let us reflect on the greatness of his love for us that he

sent his only son to redeem us from our weaknesses and failures. God is great and so we ought to give him everything we have to praise and thank him. Deo gratias!

This season of the year is full of celebrations. The invitations come, not only from friends and family

who want to see us, but from the same heart where the echoes of the drums and Christmas gifts that we

lived in our childhoods sound.

Shared clarity is required. Yesterday they gave me a fragrant Christmas tree and like every year I like to

sit and contemplate it and this brings back fond memories of when I was a child and thinking about

Christmas past and how different it is now.

From now on the pre-Christmas weeks are a celebration of hope. We try to reject the winter darkness

and seek the light that shines in our hearts.

Sometimes it takes bright light to recognize the Messiah who is coming to our world. In the story of

Jesus from his birth he was wrapped in the clothes of the poor and put in a manger. How will we

become what history challenges us to be?

For this reason, with the testimony of light we must proclaim the kingdom of God. It is necessary to

share the light and talk, not on the basis of a dark ignorance, but from the desire to know and celebrate

the new humanity present through the Incarnation of the Word in Jesus.

All those who share the posadas and shepherds of the Latino community take a stand at the door of the

world and knock for it to open to the tired and marginalized. They insist that compassion is not

something that is acquired, but a food that nurtures and unites the values of justice and love that are

part of our lives. We ask for lodging until we see how we all suffer from exclusion and we need the

invitation to enter the center where God dwells.

In the Philippine “Simbang Gabi” celebrations they celebrate the promise of messianic leadership, long

ago realized in Jesus and later expected in his definite coming which will end the darkness forever.

Shining stars, children, processions and angels mark the festival of the nine nights before Christmas

with celebrations that challenge their people to continue creating culture and to be, not an object of

history, but its subject and author.

Our participation in these local and cultural celebrations this month will serve us well to bring light to

our own cultural memory.

Paul gives us advice in his letter to the Thessalonians. According to him, we should never drown the

Spirit or despise the prophecies, but rather investigate everything. We must already understand the

action of the Spirit, always creating and liberating us, making us responsible for human life. It helps us

to seek life despite the insistent shadows of death. Prophecy is the word of the Spirit, challenging us to

accept our deliverance. Only in this way can we see how we affect the world with life and how we give

hope by looking for the matches that light the candles of the heart.

Queridos amigos en Cristo, este fin de semana celebramos la liturgia del Tercer Domingo de Adviento (B). Encendemos la tercera vela de adviento en nuestra corona de adviento de color rosa que simboliza la "alegría". La idea de 'gozo' que toma este tercer domingo de Adviento como tema principal proviene de la Antífona de Entrada de esta misa: “Regocíjate en el Señor siempre; de nuevo digo, regocíjate. De hecho, el Señor está cerca". Esta antífona se cita de la carta de San Pablo a los Filipenses, capítulo 4, versículos 4-5. Digamos algo sobre el color litúrgico "rosa". Mucha gente llama erróneamente a este color rosa. Este color se usa dos veces en nuestra liturgia durante todo el año, durante el tiempo de Adviento y Cuaresma. ¿Por qué el color "rosa"? La liturgia de hoy nos invita a regocijarnos y reflexionar sobre la inmensidad de este misterio con renovada esperanza de que todo lo que está sucediendo a nuestro alrededor tenga su debido final y la vida vuelva a encaminar con toda su fuerza. De hecho, alegrémonos siempre en el Señor. Reflexionemos sobre la grandeza de su amor por nosotros que envió a su único hijo para redimirnos de nuestras debilidades y fracasos. Dios es grande y por eso debemos darle todo lo que tenemos para alabarlo y agradecerle. ¡Deo gratias!

Esta temporada del año se llena de celebraciones. Las invitaciones llegan, no sólo de los amigos y

familiares que nos quieren ver, sino del mismo corazón en donde suenan los ecos de los tambores y

aguinaldos que vivimos en nuestra niñez.

Hace falta una claridad compartida. Ayer me regalaron un árbol navideño oloroso y como cada año

me gusta sentarme a contemplarlo y esto me trae gratos recuerdos de cuando era niño y en pensar en las

navidades pasadas y en cuan diferente es ahora.

A partir de ahora las semanas prenavideñas son una celebración de esperanza. Hacemos el intento de

rechazar las tinieblas invernales y buscamos la luz que ilumine en nuestros corazones.

En ocasiones hace falta luz brillante para poder reconocer al Mesías que viene a nuestro mundo. En la

historia de Jesús desde su nacimiento fue envuelto en la ropa de los pobres y puesto en un

pesebre. ¿Cómo llegaremos a ser lo que la historia nos reta a ser?

Por eso con el testimonio de la luz debemos proclamar el reino de Dios. Hay que compartir la luz y

conversar, no en base de una ignorancia tenebrosa, sino desde el deseo de conocer y celebrar la nueva

humanidad presente por la Encarnación del Verbo en Jesús.

Todos los que comparten las posadas y pastorelas de la comunidad latina toman un puesto a la puerta

del mundo y tocan para que ella abra a los cansados y marginados. Ellos insisten que la compasión no

es una cosa que se adquiere, sino un alimento que nutre y une los valores de la justicia y amor que

forman parte de nuestra vida. Pedimos hospedaje hasta ver cómo todos sufrimos de la exclusión y hace

falta la invitación a entrar al centro en donde mora Dios.

En las celebraciones filipinas del “Simbang Gabi” celebran la promesa del liderazgo mesiánico, hace

tiempo realizada en Jesús y esperada después en su venida definida la que pondrá fin a la oscuridad

para siempre. Las estrellas brillantes, los niños, las procesiones y los ángeles marcan el festival de las

nueve noches prenavideñas con las celebraciones que retan a su pueblo a seguir creando cultura y a ser,

no un objeto de la historia, sino su sujeto y autor.

Nuestra participación en estas celebraciones locales y culturales del presente mes nos servirá muy bien

para traer luz a nuestra propia memoria cultural.

Pablo nos da un consejo en su carta a los Tesalonicenses. Según él, jamás debemos ahogar el Espíritu o

despreciar las profecías, sino investigar todo. Ya debemos entender la acción del Espiritu, siempre

creando y liberándonos, haciéndonos responsables de la vida humana. Nos ayuda a buscar la vida a

pesar de las sombras insistentes de la muerte. La profecía es la palabra del Espíritu, retándonos a

aceptar nuestra liberación. Sólo así podemos ver cómo afectamos el mundo con la vida y cómo damos

esperanza al buscar los fósforos que encienden las velas del corazón.

JOHN THE BAPTIST

At a school open house a woman

could be overheard introducing her husband to some of the other parents. “Oh, Bill, I’d like you to

meet Johnny’s father. And over here, this is Marie’s mom;

you know, the little girl from our Ellen’s soccer team.” With

satisfied resignation Bill introduced himself not by name: “I’m Ellen’s Dad.”

It’s good to know who you are. Be it someone’s father or mother,

son or daughter, husband or wife, it’s important to embrace the full

meaning of our various roles. John the Baptist knows who he is. And who he is not. He is not

the Christ. Nor Elijah. Nor like any other prophet God’s people

had ever seen. John the Baptist knows his mission is divine.

He’s more than satisfied to be the one to announce the coming

of God’s reign. The Christ is

The Shape of the Mass

In the renewal of the liturgy that

followed the Second Vatican Council, the full, conscious, and

active participation of the

assembly was the primary consideration. By participation,

the Council Fathers did not mean just joining in the singing

and the spoken responses, but active engagement and

prayerful understanding of the

rites. They envisioned a transparent liturgy, a worship

that spoke so directly to the hearts and minds of the faithful

that it would require no explanation at all. The liturgy

itself is the best possible

catechesis on the liturgy. What does the liturgy teach us? It

shows us the ministry of Jesus continuing in the present. He

gathers a community. He calls us to prayer and repentance and praise. He teaches us with the

very word of God. He does not send us away empty, but sets

before us a marvelous banquet, feeding us with his very body

and blood. Then he sends us forth to do what he has done—to give ourselves for others, not just

in words, but in deeds. The Mass is the pattern of our

En una casa abierta de la escuela se escuchó a una mujer presentando a

su marido a algunos de los otros padres. “Oh, José, me gustaría que conozcas al padre de Juanito. Y aquí, esta es la mamá de María, ya

sabes la niña que juega fútbol con nuestra Elena”. Con satisfecha

resignación Bill se presentó no por su nombre sino: “Soy el padre de

Elena”. Es bueno saber quién es uno. Si somos el padre o la madre de

alguien, hijo o hija, esposo o esposa, es importante que aceptemos el sentido pleno de nuestras diferentes funciones. Juan Bautista sabe quién

es. Y quién no es. No es el Cristo. No es Elías. Tampoco igual a ningún otro profeta que el pueblo de Dios hubiese visto. Juan Bautista sabe que

su misión es divina. Está más que satisfecho de ser el que anuncia la

La Señal de la Cruz

La cruz es la victoria del vencido. Sobre el madero, sobre la cruz de Cristo, se llevó a cabo no sólo la redención

del género humano, sino también, la Nueva Alianza. En adelante ya no será necesario ofrecer el sacrificio de animales (corderos o cabritos) como en el antiguo Israel porque la Sangre de Cristo nos ha reconciliado con

Dios. Por ello, esta señal la trazamos sobre nuestra frente misma, para que recordemos siempre las palabras de

Jesucristo y las repitamos continuamente. La trazamos sobre nuestros labios, para que a tiempo y destiempo, proclamemos con nuestra palabra la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo. La trazamos, desde la frente hasta el pecho,

de hombro a hombro, para recordar que en nuestro interior, donde decidimos qué hacer, debemos optar por el estilo de vida cristiano, debemos ser Cristo. Nos santiguamos al inicio de toda celebración: “En el nombre del

Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”. La asamblea responde con un rotundo Amén que reconoce la Santísima Trinidad en un solo Dios. Lo invocamos, no porque Dios esté perdido, no porque se haya ido; lo invocamos porque no siempre hemos sido conscientes de su presencia continua en nosotros. Más que llamarlo como si

Following the current orders from Governor Newsom and the directives from the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles, effective immediately, churches are allowed to do

worships services when it is done outdoors. In view of this, we are going to set up our Sunday masses outdoors in our church parking lot.

Our IN– PERSON OUTDOOR Mass times will be as follows:

For social distancing reasons, we do have the 6 feet requirement.

In order for you to attend, YOU WILL NEED TO CALL & RESERVE.

Please call the parish office at 323.660.0034. If the line is busy, please call again. Reservations will be taken the week BEFORE the Mass itself.

Confirmation number will be required for all attendees. Limited capacity.

ACTUALIZACION DE LA IGLESIA

Siguiendo las órdenes actuales del Gobernador Newsom y las directivas de la Arquidiócesis de

Los Ángeles, efectivas de inmediato, nuestras misas en persona los domingos están ahora
