Preface

Dear Readers,

Once again, we can look back on a successful year for the IMC which was full of

activities in each of our three pillars – research, teaching and business engagement.

We have made consistent progress in each of these three fields.

Let’s start with research. In the past year, four researchers successfully earned their

doctoral degrees and several of the Institute’s papers were accepted by high-ranking

international journals, notably in Management Accounting Research and Contempo-

rary Accounting Research. The Annual Conference for Management Accounting

Research (ACMAR) retained and strengthened its position as one of the leading con-

ferences for the management accounting community in Europe. A further highlight

last year was the approval of extra research funding from the German Research

Foundation (DFG). The DFG is promoting next year’s symposium on sustainability

and controlling, which will be jointly organized by the IMC and the School of Account-

ing at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in Dalian, China. Another

highlight was the recognition of our high research productivity: IMC doctoral gradu-

ates are amongst the most productive young researchers in Europe. In a ranking of

PhD programs based on the research productivity of each institution’s graduates in

the years immediately following their graduation, WHU ranks No. 2 in Germany and

No. 6 in Europe. That’s an impressive feat!

On the teaching side, there are at least two points worth mentioning. First, we have

begun to create controlling case studies as a basis for academic teaching. They offer

opportunities to discuss developments in German companies and will help to fill a

gap in the range of international case studies currently available. The first two case

studies are almost finished, and others will follow soon. Second, we must mention

the 9th edition of the classic textbook “Einführung in das Rechnungswesen”, which

has been considerably extended in the area of cost accounting.

In the field of business engagement, there were two particular highlights. One of

these is the Working Group “Management and Control in Public Institutions” which is

moving into its second phase. The group has been expanded to include new mem-

bers, such as the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Office for Migration and

Refugees. Now that the change concept has been finalized, we are focusing on

implementing concrete measures toward New Public Management.

Our second highlight concerns the way we communicate our wide-ranging activites

into practice. We have created a new digital platform for this purpose, namely WHU

on Controlling. The platform condenses our activities into a format that is easily

accessible for practitioners. It has a number of key features, notably that it differenti-

ates between those users who are searching for specific topics and those who are

more closely associated with us. For this latter group, we have created the WHU

Controller Circle, which offers members certain benefits such as discounted registra-

tion for the WHU Campus for Controlling. In terms of content, the platform provides

two new rubrics: Our conceptual view of controlling can be found under “Perspec-

tives”, while we take a closer look at developments that are having a significant influ-

ence on management accounting or the finance function in “Latest Thinking”. We are

also exploring new channels of communication with short video clips that illustrate

our perspectives – why don’t you take a look! WHU on Controlling will be networked

with the intranets of our close partners, and we can also now be found on the social

media sites Xing and LinkedIn. First indications from the hit rates are that our new

offerings have been well received.

Finally, a few words about our continuing commitment to the university. The senior

faculty have been re-elected to the Senate of WHU. Utz Schäffer is Group Speaker of

the Management Group, Ombudsman, and Contact Person for the Joint Committee

on the Handling of Security-Relevant Research set up by DFG. Jürgen Weber is

Associate Dean Corporate Connections.

Research Groups Controlling & Strategy Execution and The Roles of CFOs and Controllers

We use our team events to get to know each other in a more informal atmosphere

away from the distractions of the Institute. Over the years, we have found that we

don’t need to hold high-octane cooking events or GPS tours with geocaching in

order to get everyone together and have a great time! Last year we had plenty of fun

doing relatively simple things such as a team quiz or a game of football.

Our monthly team days are another important way of communicating with each

other. In addition to the plenum, which we use to provide a general overview of the

Institute’s activities, the team days focus on the two research groups which meet

afterwards. These meetings give the doctoral students an opportunity to present

their latest research to the faculty and other students in their research group and thus

receive valuable feedback for developing their work further. These discussions are

extremely important throughout the doctoral program and an integral part of the

research culture at the Institute.

Patrick Heinemann obtained a double degree in business administration at the Euro-

pean Business School (EBS) in Oestrich Winkel and the Thunderbird Graduate School

of International Management. In 2006, he finished his doctoral studies on the use of

management accounting information under the supervision of Utz Schäffer. After

joining the restructuring team of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants between 2007

and 2010, Patrick moved into industry early in 2011 as Head of Corporate Develop-

ment & M&A for VBH Holding AG, the world’s largest retailer for window and door

hardware. He was operationally responsible for the group restructuring program and

subsequently promoted to CFO/COO of the German subsidiary VBH Deutschland

GmbH. This year, he returned to the Restructuring & Corporate Finance Competence

Center of Roland Berger in Stuttgart where he has held the position of Principal since

April. His focus lies on restructuring medium to large companies and corporate per-

formance programs.

Daniel Kauer joined Utz Schäffer’s chair at EBS in 2004. Prior to this, having gradu-

ated from the Technical University of Stuttgart with a diploma in business administra-

tion, he had been working as a consultant with McKinsey for 2 years. As a member

of an EBS research group on Strategic Sensemaking, Daniel investigated the influ-

ence of managers’ functional and organizational experience on strategic sensemak-

ing. Having finished his dissertation, he went back to McKinsey for a further 6 years,

focusing on automotive and assembly industries, and module strategies. In 2013, he

joined Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge in Hannover as the product manager responsible

for the pickup Amarok. Since 2014, he has been leading the Volkswagen Nutz-

fahrzeuge’s division for product management, bearing responsibility for the global

product portfolio strategy, CO2 management, connectivity strategy as well as overall

product management across all product lines of Volks wagen Nutzfahrzeuge.

Barbara E. Weißenberger gained her doctorate and qualified as professor at the

WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management from 1992 to 2002. Her habilitation

thesis was awarded the Austrian Controller Award in 2003. That same year, she

accepted a professorship in Business Administration IV, esp. Controlling and Inte-

grated Reporting at the Justus Liebig University Giessen, which she led until Septem-

ber 30, 2014. After receiving calls to other universities (Ulm University, Freie Univer-

sität Berlin), Barbara E. Weißenberger has held the Chair of Accounting (succeeding

Professor Klaus-Peter Franz) at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since Octo-

ber 01, 2014. This Chair covers subjects such as international accounting, controlling

and auditing.

In September 2014, Barbara E. Weißenberger was appointed Affiliate Professor of

Accounting at the Faculty of Bucerius Law School, Hamburg.

Barbara E. Weißenberger is a member of numerous scientific societies and sits on the

editorial boards of national and international scientific journals. She has been CEO of

the Association of University Professors of Management e.V. since January 1, 2015.

WHU Doctoral Program in Management Accounting Ranked #6 in EuropeDoctoral graduates of the IMC are amongst the most productive young researchers

in Europe. In a ranking of PhD programs based on the research productivity of each

institution’s graduates in the years immediately following their graduation, WHU

ranks No. 2 in Germany and No. 6 in Europe. “We are delighted with this result”, said

Utz Schäffer, director of the IMC. “It is gratifying to see that our doctoral program not

only has practical relevance, but is also making contributions at the cutting-edge of

international research.”

The annual ranking, produced by Scott L. Summers and David A. Wood of Brigham

Young University, relates to the number of peer-reviewed articles published in 12 of

the world’s most prestigious accounting journals in a three-year post-graduation win-

dow. The quality of each PhD program is measured in terms of how often its gradu-

ates published in one of the selected journals over this period.

Strengthened Collaboration Between IMC and DUFE: DFG and NFSC Approve Funding for Sino-German Research SymposiumThe Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (SGC) has accepted a proposal for

a research symposium that will be jointly organized by the IMC and the School of

Accounting at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in Dalian, China.

The SGC, which is financed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China

(NSFC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Founda-

tion), is unique in its status as a German-Chinese joint venture in research promotion.

The symposium, which will take place in Dalian in spring 2016, will convene more

than 15 researchers from China and Germany who will address the call for more

research on environmental management and controlling to mitigate problems arising

from environmental pollution. Given the environmental challenges to all major econo-

mies, the symposium will focus on Germany, a pioneer in this field, and China, which

faces enormous environmen-

tal challenges caused by its

impressive economic growth.

lished by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemein-

schaft) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. It aids research

institutions in the sustainable implementation of the recommendations on “Scientific

Freedom and Scientific Responsibility” that were published by DFG and the Leopol-

dina in June 2014.

acts as a point of contact for queries regarding a responsible approach to security-

relevant research and provides a platform where research institutions can share their

Economic Crisis

The paper combines survey and archival data to analyze the changing importance of

different budgeting functions during the economic crisis that began in 2008. The

results indicate that budgeting became more important for planning and resource

allocation but less important for performance evaluation. Additional evidence from

interviews and data gathered in a focus group further illustrate the changes organiza-

tions have introduced to respond to the economic crisis.

In the economic literature patience is mostly considered a one-dimensional concept

and often measured as an individual’s willingness to defer consumption as expressed

by the implicit time discount rate. This study argues that patience has a broader,

multi-dimensional meaning. To support this view the authors conduct a survey with

19 items derived from prior studies that measure certain aspects of patience. The

data analysis supports a multi-dimensional view of patience by revealing that only a

small subset of the 19 items is correlated with self-evaluations of patience, which in

turn is correlated with the standard economics measure of time discount rate.

Situations of Institutional Complexity

This study investigates in depth how decision-making of different organizational

members is shaped by various management control systems (MCSs) that reflect dif-

ferent institutional logics, how the entire organization deals with the arising institu-

tional complexity, and which role different management controls as a system play in

such situations. The results show options for organizational leaders to deal with dif-

ferent kind of worldviews (i.e. logics) that shape employees’ behavior. Particularly,

this paper explains how leaders can restructure their MCSs to influence human

behavior in times of radical change.

Payments: The Effects of Subjective Performance Measures and the Achievement

of Bonus Targets

The authors argue that the effect of subjectivity on fairness perceptions follows an

inverted U-shaped relation, consistent with the idea that subjectivity increases fair-

ness perceptions when the overall emphasis on subjective measures is relatively low

– but that subjectivity decreases fairness perceptions when the overall emphasis on

subjective measures is relatively high. The authors use a time-ordered cross-sec-

tional survey study design to separate the measurement of ex ante contract charac-

teristics from the measurement of actual bonus payments and managers’ fairness

perceptions. They find that managers use bonus targets as referent standards,

whose achievement increases perceptions of distributive fairness, but not of proce-

dural fairness.

Collaboration With the Henkel Center of Consumer Goods (HCCG) Goes From Strength to StrengthNow in its 6th year, the Henkel Center of Consumer Goods (HCCG) can look back on

a very successful year in 2015. In all areas – teaching, research, and business engage-

ment – various events took place that further strengthened the already strong ties

between Henkel and WHU. With Jürgen Weber, who is a member of the HCCG Advi-

sory Board, and Marko Reimer, who is a member of the HCCG team, the IMC is

actively involved in many of the center’s activities.

One of the highlights in 2015 was the visit of Kathrin Menges (Executive Vice Presi-

dent Human Resources and Infrastructure Sevices) and Carsten Knobel (Executive

Vice President Finance / CFO) to the WHU campus in Vallendar. On November 13,

both top management team members invited

selected students from all programs to an exclusive

breakfast and also gave a joint guest lecture on

“Inspired Global Teamwork: Cross-Company Col-

laboration and Top-Talent Acquisition” to a wider

WHU audience. In the afternoon, WHU hosted the

8th HCCG Advisory Board Meeting. Marko Reimer,

who is responsible for joint activities in the field of

Finance/Controlling, presented a broad spectrum of

teaching and research collaborations. For example,

Jürgen Weber’s Controlling and Cost Accounting

lectures included guest speeches by Dr. Christian

Hebeler (Corporate Vice President, Financial Direc-

tor Laundry & Home Care) and Dr. Hendrik Angelkort

(Head of Functional Controlling / Special Projects,

As part of their Management Abroad courses, Utz

Schäffer and Marko Reimer visited Henkel’s facili-

On the research side, Marko Reimer presented intriguing results on strategic con-

sensus in Henkel’s senior controller teams based on the joint research project on

Wipro Center for Business Resilience: How Do New Technologies Affect Management Accounting and Control?Based on the strong belief that corporate success and long-run survival in rapidly

and disruptively changing market environments demand a radically different way of

thinking about strategy and technology, the Wipro Center for Business Resilience

was initiated in 2014. The Wipro Center seeks to investigate from different scholarly

perspectives how the increasing pace of technological evolution will affect the world

of management and leadership over the next decade.

The IMC and Leona Wiegmann, who is a fellow of the Wipro Center, actively contrib-

uted to the objectives of the Center by investigating how changes in management

accounting and control are driven by new technologies. Based on data from the WHU

Controller Panel and from single case studies, the researchers found that modern IT

systems can enable controllers’ transformation to business partner by enhancing

standardization and data quality. Based on these preconditions, modern IT systems

increase efficiency and managers’ satisfaction with processes, by helping to support

managerial decision-making through deeper analysis. Furthermore, companies who

deploy modern IT systems are characterized by a more intensive intraorganizational

exchange of information and a more open way of dealing with problems. As a result

of this research project, the IMC has published articles in practitioner journals, such

as CIO Magazin and Controlling.

The potential that IT systems offer seems to suggest that an intense collaboration is

necessary between IT and controlling. Therefore, in 2016 the IMC’s research focus at

the Wipro Center for Business resilience will be on the collaboration of the CFO and

CIO.

Marko Reimer and Sebastiaan Van Doorn Receive Research Grant From British AcademyMarko Reimer and his co-author Sebastiaan Van Doorn of Warwick Business School

have received a research grant from the prestigious British Academy as financial sup-

port for a current research project. In this project they investigate formative life events

of CEOs and their various implications for companies.

The British Academy is the United Kingdom’s national academy for the humanities

and social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its Royal Charter from

King Edward VII.

Leona Wiegmann Receives Research Grant From Dr. Werner Jackstädt FoundationLeona Wiegmann and her co-researchers have received a grant from the Dr. Werner

Jackstädt foundation providing financial support for a joint research project. The pro-

ject is dedicated to decision making in the digital age and investigates the influence

of individual and organizational information processing on companies’ success.

The Dr. Werner Jackstädt foundation is a private foundation established in 2002. Its

purpose is to stimulate modern initiatives, which respond to the ever-changing con-

ditions in business administration, and to support young researchers in this field.

Academic Discourse in an Informal Atmosphere: ACMAR 2015 The 12th Annual Conference for Management Accounting Research (ACMAR) at

WHU was a popular meeting point for the international academic management

accounting community on March 5 – 6, 2015. Three keynote speeches, parallel ses-

sions, a poster session, and a doctoral colloquium still left ample room for stimulating

academic discourse. Behavioral Controlling and the cooperation between research

and practice turned out to be topics of major interest to the participants. Utz Schäffer

and Jürgen Weber welcomed around 130 professors, researchers, and doctoral stu-

dents to Vallendar. “We especially invite young researchers to engage in discussions

and use the opportunity to exchange views and insights in a relaxed atmosphere”,

said Utz Schäffer in his opening speech.

Sally Widener, professor at Clemson University (USA), kicked off the conference with

her keynote entitled “Untapped Possibilities – Survey Methods and Behavioral Man-

agement Accounting Issues”: She underlined that there is more to successful busi-

ness performance than external factors – human behaviour must be taken into

account as well. According to her, there is a need for much more research into Behav-

ioral Controlling. “The tap is only dripping, we have not fully opened it”, said Widener.

She also called for a combination of all available methods used in research. Best

results can be achieved when experiments and surveys are combined and integrated.

Dr. Martin Muhr, CFO of RWE Retail und Essent (NL), also focused on Behavioral

Controlling. The practitioner told a room full of academics that cognitive biases

played a key role in investment decisions, which contributed to RWE’s current diffi-

cult situation. As a consequence, RWE has now introduced debiasing techniques.

Establishing long-term cooperation

between research, teaching, and prac-

tice is Professor Anne Wu’s (National

Cheng Chi University) objective. In the

third keynote at ACMAR, she elaborated

on her experiences in working with busi-

nesses in China. Anne Wu has been

advising companies who are establish-

ing controlling in their organizations for a

number of years now. According to her,

“planting trees” in the business world

years ago, enables her to harvest

“apples and cherries” today. Professor

Wu uses research and solution models

that can be offered to other companies as well.

Ahead of the conference, ten doctoral students from the UK, Switzerland, Austria, the

Netherlands, and Germany took the opportunity to discuss their own research with

Sally Widener, Anne Wu, and Utz Schäffer at the ACMAR Doctoral Colloquium. A

number of different research areas were covered, including risk-taking in British

investment banks, controller roles in organizations, and the short- and long-term

implications of incentive schemes. Besides this, the doctoral students were given

insights into the broad range of methods used in management accounting research.

Exchanging Ideas Around the World: Professor Martin Hiebl Presents Paper on Strategic Planning in Family FirmsProfessor Martin Hiebl presented his working paper on strategic planning in family

firms at a WHU research seminar. In his paper, he identifies and reviews studies that

investigated the antecedents, characteristics or consequences of strategic planning

in the specific context of family firms. Based on this literature, he discusses implica-

tions for research in the field of strategic management accounting and highlights

fruitful avenues for further research.

Professor Hiebl was recently appointed to the Chair of Management Accounting and

Control at the University of Siegen. His research interests include management

accounting and control in family firms, and the role of chief financial officers in organ-

izations. He has published his research in leading national and international journals

such as Schmalenbach Business Review and Journal of Management Accounting

Research.

Highlights

New Edition of Classic Textbook “Einführung in das Rechnungswesen”The standard textbook on internal and external accounting has been thoroughly

revised and brought up-to-date to include current legislation and new chapters on

relevant areas of accounting practice. The subject matter is presented clearly and

comprehensively using a case study that runs throughout the book, as well as illus-

trative graphics and tables. This is a textbook that is relevant for both teaching and

practice, and which puts financial accounting and cost accounting in an overall con-

text while describing how they are interrelated.

The book includes an practical “instruction manual” which explains how cost

accounting can be used to support specific decisions and planning activities in

everyday business situations. It also takes a look at new developments in cost

accounting such as activity-based costing and customer profitability analysis. Each

chapter has a learning objective and questions with sample solutions so that readers

can keep track of their progress.

This is the 9th edition of the classic textbook written by Jürgen Weber and Professor

Barbara E. Weißenberger.

Students: Teaching and Classes at IMCWe aim to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need in practice.

Therefore, our teaching activities are guided by two considerations: Firstly, control-

ling systems are designed and used by people, namely managers and controllers,

which is why most of our teaching follows a behavioral and social perspective. Sec-

ondly, controlling and strategy execution are based on important tools that students

need to learn and understand. However, analytical

problem solving, communication skills, and the

development of the student’s personality are at

least as important. As a matter of fact, we want to

contribute to the development of responsible lead-

ers in the finance function and beyond.

The IMC Student Affairs team is responsible for

managing and coordinating all activities relating to

the courses offered by the IMC. These include, for

example, supporting the faculty in the preparation

and follow-up of their courses as well as communi-

cating with the administrative bodies of the WHU

(e.g. the examination office, program planning, cen-

tral services, etc.). In addition, our Student Affairs team is the first point of contact for

students as it is familiar not only with the administrative processes of WHU, but also

with the contents of the lectures.

Nadja Marx: Is Mother Theresa a Sinner? The Role of the “Advocatus Diaboli” in the Canonization Process of the Roman Catholic ChurchThe goal of this paper was to find answers to the questions whether the devil’s advo-

cate is more than just a dissenter, whether the controller is his corporate equivalent,

and whether the controller could also fulfil the role of the dissenter. The research

started with a general overview over the importance of canonization and sainthood

for the Catholic Church and a historical recount of the process development. On this

basis the role of the devil’s advocate was analyzed and it was found that despite

having held the role of the dissenter for centuries, his other roles include information

center, process manager, changer, and consultant. As such, his roles show striking

similarities to the role of the controller in the firm, who is indeed the corporate coun-

terpart to the devil’s advocate. A deeper analysis of the similarities between the con-

troller and the devil’s advocate also yielded the result that the dissenter role would be

a valuable addition to the role portfolio of today’s controllers.

Maren Schönfelder: Shared Service Center: Assessing its Effects on the Role of Management AccountantsThis master’s thesis contributes to the current academic discussions about the

understanding of the impact on the management accountant’s work as implications

on if, and if yes, how, the role of management accountants changes. Following a

qualitative research approach, findings from a comparative case study of two Ger-

man-based multinational companies confirm the potential of shared service centers

to enhance the management accountant’s role with respect to increased busi-

ness-oriented work. However, empirical evidence also shows that ensuring data

quality over a geographical distance absorbs higher work capacity from the manage-

ment accountant than efficiency dictates. Furthermore, the execution of know ledge-

based management accounting tasks requires higher-class profiles in a shared ser-

vice center, almost comparable to the management accountant’s profiles in the

business.

Dominic Djannesari: Business Partnering in Practice – The Relationship Between Controllers’ Roles and Reporting PracticesThis thesis explores how controller roles affect the internal reporting practices of

organizations. Existing literature on the antecedents, characteristics, and conse-

quences of controllers’ roles suggests a shift towards stronger business orientation.

The thesis shows that there are multiple effects of the three roles of business partner,

corporate policeman, and scorekeeper on the methods and the internal perception of

reporting. Furthermore, the direct effect of the controller roles and selectively interac-

tion effects between the roles and other reporting-related and environmental factors

have been investigated. Using survey data from 229 respondents in 18 different

industries, the thesis shows that the roles directly affect reporting on the formal and

the content level. Moreover, the roles have an influence on the perceived relevance of

the internal reporting and the management satisfaction with reporting. Summarizing

the latter, it appears that stronger emphasis of the business partner role leads to

higher internal relevance of reporting, and business partners’ content positively influ-

ences management satisfaction. Furthermore, these findings suggest that an empha-

sis on the corporate policeman role leads to higher relevance of reporting in uncertain

environments. These findings add to the understanding of the practical implications

of controller roles.

Victoria Gierok: How to Get the Right Performance – Management Control Systems in Public SchoolsFrom both a theoretical and an empirical perspective, the thesis at hand discusses

the reform of learning standards carried out in 2004 in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Its the-

oretical part contrasts a perspective of sociological control taken on by researchers

in the field of education with the view on management control brought forward by

Merchant and van der Stede. In this vein, the object of the study is evaluated as hav-

ing shifted from an input-focused to an output-focused model. A single case study

conducted only partly supports this theoretical argument, and shows potential rea-

sons for resistance to change.

Management Abroad

For the eighth year in a row, the IMC led two groups of WHU students to China with

the Management Abroad Courses (MAC) which are designed to provide insight into

the practice of international as well as domestic companies in Asia. The opportunity

to experience China and learn more about major management topics in Shanghai

and the Pearl River Delta was well received by the participating students.

Marko Reimer and Fabian Hofmann organized the MAC program in China’s Pearl

River Delta. With a group of 30 students they visited manufacturing firms such as

Mascotte in the Guangzhou area and service firms such as Deutsche Bank in Hong

Kong. Several new companies were included into this year’s MAC program. For

example, students had the opportunity to visit the Miele production site for vacuum

cleaners (Dongguan) and the McKinsey office (Hong Kong). For the first time, MAC

students met the Managing Director China of Lesara who presented the company’s

business model and arranged a visit of local production facilities. Students gained

unique insights into the Berlin-based online start-up that was founded in 2013 by

WHU alumnus Roman Kirsch.

Utz Schäffer and Markus Ehrmann led their Management Abroad Course, which also

consisted of 30 students, to Shanghai. The agenda comprised visits to Volkswagen

& VW Transmission, Hansgrohe, Bayer, BASF, McKinsey, Procter & Gamble, Kueh-

ne+Nagel, Henkel, Kuka (furniture manufacturer), Metro, and PricewaterhouseCoo-

pers in Shanghai. Students also had the opportunity to meet with WHU alumni and

successful founders in Asia. Moreover, they had the chance to experience the cities

of Nanjing, Hangzhou and – together with Chinese students from Tongji University –

worked on a case study about sourcing strategies in the food industry.

Future-Oriented Controlling – Components of SuccessWhat makes controlling future-oriented? What are the components of success? More

than 120 participants enjoyed the congenial atmosphere and stimulating contribu-

tions of controlling experts and managers from a wide range of industries at this

year’s WHU Campus for Controlling.

At the start of the conference, Jürgen Weber stated that a key part of the controller’s

role, namely assuring management rationality, would become even more important in

future. Opportunism and the cognitive limitations of managers make it essential that

there is a “controlling culture” based on transparency, an open exchange of informa-

tion, constructive criticism, and target-oriented behavior, which all help to prevent

wrong decisions being made and contribute to a company’s success.

This message was continued by Dr. Peter Scherpereel (Head of Controlling Genera-

tion & Trading at RWE) who described how systematic errors can occur due to an

individual‘s perception and evaluation – so-called biases – which can have severe

consequences for companies. RWE, one of Europe’s leading utility companies, has

adopted measures to prevent the consequences of biases by implementing debias-

ing techniques in decision-making processes.

Dr. Jan Kemper (Senior Vice President Finance) and Dr. Jörg Engelbergs (Vice Presi-

dent Controlling) of Zalando described the controllers of their the early days as gen-

eralists who had little opportunity to “control”. The development to critical counter-

part and sparring partner of management has taken place gradually over the years

and in accordance with stakeholders’ needs. Zalando now has a controlling organi-

zation that combines finance, customer, and sales perspectives and also facilitates

the communication of essential information internally.

In her presentation entitled “Why Talk to Each Other? – The Interaction Between

Controllers and Managers in the Era of Digitalization”, Leona Wiegmann presented

the latest findings of the WHU Controller Panel. On the one hand, the study shows

that modern IT systems are causing the focus of controller activity to shift from the

supply and aggregation of data towards data analysis and interpretation as well as

communication and discussion. This puts controllers in a stronger position to pursue

business partnering activites. On the other hand, the study makes it clear that man-

agers are more than happy with the flexible, customized, self-service options availa-

ble to them, which allow them to find their own information without the help of con-

trolling. However, this does not mean that managers are willing to do away with

discussions with the controlling department – in fact, it is quite the opposite. Modern

IT systems provide an opportunity to get involved in more substantive discussions

and to address problems together.

The ”OSCAR” project, which was presented by Volker Hagemann, Head of Control-

ling of Leica Camera AG, was successful in establishing a client-oriented controlling

organization, standardizing queries and reports, and enabling interactive access to

figures and reports during meetings. Roles are now allocated within the controlling

department, which differentiate between experts, who are contact points for specific

technical areas such as purchasing or investments, and business partners, who pro-

vide a more communicative and people-oriented role and are contact points for

departmental managers. Moreover, applications, key figures, parameters, and filters

have been defined in detail, which has greatly improved the clarity of communication

between managers and controllers (in the role of business partner). On the whole,

this has contributed to better corporate management and more recognition from

managers.

What is the job specification that controllers will have to fulfill in future and what new

tasks will they face? In the podium discussion, Volker Hagemann (Leica Camera AG),

Dr. Mark Jehle (Merz Pharma GmbH & Co. KGaA), Stefan Prause (Bayer AG), and

Björn Radtke (CTcon GmbH) discussed the next generation of controllers. The

experts are convinced that there will be higher expectations placed on business part-

ners and social skills, such as interaction and communication, will become increas-

ingly important. For the foreseeable future, however, it will still be possible to pursue

a career in traditional controlling as well as the new, management-oriented career as

business partner.

The next WHU Campus for Controlling will take place on September 16, 2016.

Utz Schäffer Delivers Keynote at AHK Workshop in SuzhouThe German Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and DUSA European Association, a

private non-profit organization based in Suzhou, jointly organized a workshop in

Suzhou, China, on May 11, 2015.

In his keynote speech “Controlling in Flux – Current Development Trends and The

Transformation of a Job Profile”, Utz Schäffer focused on the second WHU study on

“The Future of Controlling” (2014) which identifies the ten top trends in controlling in

German-speaking countries and draws comparisons with the results of the first study

(2011).

Information technology, pressure for efficiency, and globalization are fundamental

megatrends bringing changes to the array of tasks carried out by management

accountants and controllers. “While the findings show some movement of trends up

and down the ranking, the continuity at the top is remarkable: Trends like information

systems, efficiency, and business partnering reflect a fundamental transformation

process of the controlling function which seems set to continue for the next decade

or two”, said Schäffer who went on to discuss with the audience the implications of

the findings for practice and career paths in controlling.

Utz Schäffer Attends IFAC Meeting in BrusselsAround 30 representatives of renowned international accounting associations con-

vened in Brussels on March 23-24, 2015 to discuss the concept of controlling and

the management accounting landscape in Europe. The meeting of the IFAC Profes-

sional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Committee, which was attended by Utz

Schäffer, was organized by the Federation of European Accountants (FEE).

Utz Schäffer’s speech entitled “Controlling – Old Wine in a German Bottle? Or More?”

focused on the differences between controlling in the German tradition and manage-

ment accounting. He discussed the different backgrounds and perspectives of man-

agement accounting and controlling, how these disciplines are organized, as well as

implications for the profession. He gave specific examples of how the work of a

controller is conducted in German organizations, focusing not only on the tools and

techniques but also on the relationship between manager and controller. Utz

Schäffer’s speech was followed by a lively discussion, underlying the fact that there

is a huge interest within the international accounting community in the concept of

controlling. The participants also agreed that there is still a big deficit in platforms for

professional exchange on different traditions in management accounting and control.

IFAC, the International Federation of Accountants, is the global organization for the

accountancy profession, comprising over 175 members and associates in 130 coun-

tries and jurisdictions, representing approximately 2.5 million accountants.

Center for Controlling & Management (CCM)The CCM was founded in 2000 to provide a communication platform for controllers

of leading German companies. Its members (Heads of Corporate Controlling of nine

partner companies, the partner and co-founder of CTcon, and the CCM team) meet

regularly to discuss relevant controlling topics. In 2015, the main focus was on “HR &

Controlling” and “Cognitive Biases”.

CCM activities kicked off with a round table at the WHU Campus in Düsseldorf in

February. In preparation, the CCM team conducted interviews with controllers in the

partner companies on “HR & Controlling”. One major finding was that in general the

interviewees use few HR metrics for corporate planning, the most widely used being

full-time equivalent (FTE) and personnel expenses.

From May to September, the CCM team conducted interviews

with HR executives and Heads of Corporate Controlling. In

line with impressions from the first series of interviews and

against expectations, Corporate Controlling does not play a

key role in formulating and executing HR strategy. An addi-

tional series of interviews on “HR Master Data” identified

major challenges and current projects in the CCM companies,

e.g., reducing the number of HR systems.

Parallel to this project, the CCM team worked on “Cognitive

Biases”. After a literature research and team internal discus-

sions, the CCM team came up with two frameworks. The first

framework consists of six categories of biases. Likewise, the

second framework bundles debiasing techniques according to

six principles. Utz Schäffer presented the results of both projects at the second round

table in September. Finally, participants discussed the agenda for the upcoming year.

Our work next year will focus on digitalization, among other topics.

In July and November, the CCM team organized workshops covering current topics

in controlling for about 20 young professionals from the partner companies. In addi-

tion to that, a round table on “Pension Provisions in Balance Sheets” took place in

June at the WHU Campus in Düsseldorf.

Controlling & Management ReviewThe journal, edited by Utz Schäffer and Jürgen Weber, contin-

ues to play an important role among the journals specializing in

management accounting and control in the German-speaking

area. It is published by Springer Gabler and is part of their

online platform “Springer for Professionals”.

The editorial office at the IMC puts much effort into transform-

ing scientific content into easily readable texts meeting the

interests and needs of practitioners. Six regular and three spe-

cial issues were published in 2015 covering: controlling of the

supply chain, budgeting, controlling and treasury, industrializa-

tion of controlling, controlling of investment activities, top per-

formance through controlling, production controlling, control-

ling in the healthcare sector, and the cooperation between the CIO and the Head of

Corporate Controlling.

Among the 75 articles, there were 12 interviews with outstanding CEOs, CFOs,

Heads of Corporate Controlling, or researchers in the field of management account-

ing and control. Michael Wilkens, Senior Vice President of Group Controlling at

Deutsche Telekom AG, reported on Telekom’s campus approach to planning. Dr. Ralf

P. Thomas, CFO of Siemens AG, talked about the challenge of further developing the

corporate controlling organization. Kasper Rorsted, CEO of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA,

presented the “Winning Culture” of Henkel. Dr. Martin Muhr, CFO of RWE Retail and

Essent, described how his company successfully tries to take into account cognitive

biases in decision making processes. Professor Anne Wu from National Chengchi

University in Taipei reported about her way of cooperating with companies for her

research. In our last issue, Dr. Roland Schütz, CIO of Lufhansa Passage, gave an

insight into his department’s close cooperation with the controlling department.

WHU Controller PanelThe WHU Controller Panel focuses on issues of current interest

as well as long-term developments in the field of controlling.

On the one hand, the latest studies deal with well-established

essential topics, on the other hand they focus on new and

innovative issues.

In 2015, the first group includes two studies dealing with salary

and incentives, and cost accounting and investment control-

ling. Of special interest to participants of the WHU Controller

Panel are answers to questions relating to the salary of control-

lers: How much do controllers earn? Which goals and incen-

tives is it based on? Real benchmarks make it possible for con-

trollers to compare themselves and their organizations with

others.

Among the second group, this year’s study of IT trends in controlling presents an

innovative issue which stems from last year’s successful study of “The Future of

Controlling”. This study identified IT as the most important driver of change within the

controlling function in future, which prompted us to delve deeper and present a short

insight into the results of this newly-designed study:

The rapidly changing IT environment has various implications for controllers because

they either support controllers in their routine work activities or are used directly by

managers in the form of self-service applications. For instance, let’s take a look at the

IT systems that controllers work with. Controllers rate the quality of data much more

highly if they have business information tools (BI tools) at their disposal rather than

spreadsheets only (72% vs. 46%). Based on this finding, our study shows how well

IT systems are currently configured, what tools are available to controllers, and which

of these tools allow complex analyses like simulations or pattern recognition.

Furthermore, our study gives us a better understanding of the effect that IT trends

have on controlling. In particular, we focus on the efficiency of controlling processes

and find that controllers have proportionally more time to spend on analyzing and

communicating data if they have BI tools at their disposal. At the same time, this

results in better quality of data which means that less time is spent clearing up incon-

sistencies.

Since its establishment in 2007, the WHU Controller Panel has developed a reputa-

tion for fostering dialogue between managerial accounting practice and research in

German-speaking countries. The nearly thousand active members from a wide range

of business sectors benefit from exclusive access to the results of the studies and a

reduced registration fee for the annual conference “WHU Campus for Controlling”.

Management and Control in Public InstitutionsThe working group was founded in March 2010 as an initiative of Professor Weber

and IMC alumnus Professor Hirsch (Universität der Bundeswehr München) together

with Dr. Frank-Jürgen Weise (Federal Employment Agency). When it first started, the

working group was primarily concerned with developing an appropriate concept for

controlling, looking at strategic management in a political context, and creating a

master plan for implementing controlling and New Public Management in public

authorities. The working group is now moving into its second phase with a wider

circle of institutions, such as the Federal Foreign office and the Federal Office for

Migration and Refugees. The focus is now on implementing concrete measures

toward controlling and New Public Management. The work schedule will continue in

2016 with the topic “Metrics for Organizational Control in Public Institutions”.

The October issue of the popular German business journal “manager magazin” fea-

tured an article on the social backgrounds of top managers. This article was largely

based on an IMC research project. Utz Schäffer, Marko Reimer, with Babak Mirheli

and Simone Just, collected publicly available information on all managers who are

top management team members of the 138 largest listed corporations or large pri-

vately owned firms in Germany. In addition, the research team sent out question-

naires to the respective 633 managers to validate and complement these data. Study

results show that German top management teams are more

open to people who have risen through the social ranks than is

sometimes supposed. In particular, the results suggest a

decline in the significance of family background. Habitus is los-

ing ground – and performance seems to be more important in

progressing to a firm’s C-level.

Parts of the “manager magazin” story were also prominently

covered in popular news and business news-related websites,

such as “Spiegel Online” and “Wirtschaftswoche online”. As a

result, the study was very well received by a broad audience.

The large interest in the study and its results was also reflected

in strong click rates on the IMC’s website. The IMC news item

which referred to the study has been viewed almost 1800 times

to date, which is around 25 times higher than the usual click

rate for an IMC news item. In addition, many national and inter-

national newspapers, TV stations, and consultancies (e.g.,

Handelsblatt, Bloomberg) have contacted the IMC researchers

for more information or to propose ideas for future collabora-

tion on this topic.
