Images Billings Arts Association MARCH 2020 A newsletter for the artists and writers of the Billings Arts Association to share our creativity and inspiration. Billings Arts Association is a regional 501(c)3 organization which encourages participation and appreciation of the visual arts and supports art education with art material grants. Member benefits include art exhibits, membership meetings, networking, workshops, demos, volunteer opportunities, BAA newsletter “Images” and BAA website. MISSION STATEMENT and MEMBER BENEFITS January 2020. A new year…wait, a new decade…barely into this 21st Century. Ask yourself, where is my art taking me? If you are unsure, join BAA paint meetups around town at our Cultural Partners locaEons or with Plein air painEng during fair weather. There are weekly groups that meet at Q’s Art shop, Sunrise Gallery, Crooked Line Studio and more. Your art colleagues are teaching in a variety of venues including the above and Yellowstone Art Museum. Check online or ask around. Take advantage of regional art opportuniEes as well. I had a blast going to Denver for the Monet show at the Denver Art Museum with 9 others. We spent 2 ½ hours with a personal guide visiEng room aSer room of exquisite Monet painEngs (borrowed from museums around the world). Each room reflected a different locaEon he lived or painted in. How can you not stand in a circular room (okay, they did not try to ship any of the curved waterlily pieces), painted a deep warm purple, filled with individual painEngs of waterlilies, and not fall in love all over again with Monet’s Giverny Garden? Not only was the show excepEonal, but the company also made the road trip memorable and the off hours downright hilarious. I can say I went to a comedy club (and never need to do that again)! What would a trip to the two-story Meininger’s Art Supply be with a car full of arEsts and without a photo with the ubiquitous art icon, Bob Ross? Boaom line, make this the year you seek new art experiences as well as create your own art. Elizabeth Waddington DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

  • ARTSHOPLEADERSHERE IS WHAT AN ARTSHOP LEADER DOES:!• Arrive early to secure entry to the room or building.!• Tape a sign - "BAA ArtShop Here Today" - in several places if needed.!• Set out note-taking supplies and place name tags on a table.!• Greet people as they enter. Remind them to get their name tags.!• Around 9:30, welcome everyone and introduce yourself. Elizabeth or another board member will

make BAA announcements.!• Then the leader starts around the table, prompting members to stand, tell their name and show

what they've brought or tell what they've been doing. Encourage those who are too quiet for others to hear to speak more loudly or to use the portable microphone if they wish. Our gatherings are meant to be a safe space where even the most shy folks can feel comfortable using their voice so they can be heard and be proud of what they do.!

    • When everyone has left, be sure to thank and check out with the building staff.!!If you cannot lead the ArtShop you volunteered for, please tell me as soon as you can. The best way is by phone or text to my mobile: 406-927-2873. I will then make other arrangements.!!Lisa [email protected]!mobile 406-927-2873!

Random Acts of Art! Keep those small works coming in. Our collection box is s-l-o-w-l-y being replenished but we need all of you to contribute so that we are ready for the next event. They were a terrific aspect at the TBEX reception and the Chamber luncheon. You can always stop by Crooked Line Studio and make some with the supplies there - Open Studio is Friday mornings from 9 to noon. 2 1/2 " x 3 1/2" original tiny works or cut up "dogs". Acetate sleeves and printed backs are available at most BAA events. I know that Visit Billings would love to include a piece of art in their relocation packets when we get a stash to share. What a great way to celebrate the arts in Billings!

He encourages students to make the most of his or any art workshop by accepting that all learning is growth. !!He invites and encourages students to visit his web site tomwolfefineart.com before the workshop to take a look at his work, see what his style presents, and decide what they want to learn from it. He says, “There are so many ways to work with watercolor; my style is realism.” He will start with a few exercises in value, color, light and shadow the first day to get an idea of where students are artistically, then move on to a portrait or something we could work on for a couple days using those skills to produce an effective painting.!

Lisa Carnicom has volunteered to be our ArtShop Chair. She will take care of scheduling Artshops on the third Saturday of every month and who will be host. THANK YOU, LISA!!

!BAA’s Elizabeth Waddington and daughter-in-law Kastina Benoit joined Billings Cultural Partner Western Heritage Center in the kids’ crafts area at a very successful Play-a-Palooza event. The mid-day event on December 14th brought kids of all ages together for crafts, guest storytelling, games, and photo booth with a real Santa. Joyce Mayer organized the craft station and we just showed up to assist (and man the hot glue gun). Jot this down so you can volunteer next year!!“Forky” from Toy Story 4 was the hands-down winner at the craft tables.!!

“YOU BE THE JUDGE”!!The Wester Heritage Center show on January 23, 2020, was comprised of thrift-store art pieces. After reflecting on what makes a particular painting good or bad, viewers could write titles for the pieces and vote for their favorite. The mediums ranged from pressed flowers to, of course, a painting on black velvet and the sizes from miniature to 4’ x 6’. It was

fun to sit in the midst of all the kitsch and do our own art to leave on the community art board. Be on the lookout for more quirky art-making opportunities with your BAA art buds!!

UPCOMING PAINTING GATHERINGS FOR 2020!!LINDA FRANSEN AND SHIRLEY SHIRLEY have volunteered to organize paintings sites for BAA this summer. BAA will also plan to paint in the Beartooth Plein Air Adventure in Red Lodge in 2020. A great way to paint with fellow artists Audubon Center
