MISSION STATEMENT UPCOMING 2017 EVENTS: Gainan’s Exhibit and Show - September 15-16, 2017 Remember to work on miniatures which have been very successful during the Gainan’s Exhibit Dear fellow artists, The other day I was listening to those loud bugs in the trees at Coulson Park. That evening I noticed the crickets had started up in our yard. My husband, Steve, listened to me say, “Wouldn’t it be fun to make a picture with all the insects that symbolize the changing seasons – you know, gnats, mayflies, ticks, mosquitoes, dragonflies? Mine would show them all sitting around at a table, with the cicada in the biggest chair and the tick in a little booster seat.” He smiled and said, “You’re weird.” Yeah, so? Inspiration is weird. Let it in, see where it goes. It won’t bite us. The more ideas we start with, the more we can be moved, swept away, made new. What direction will our inspiration take us, if we just surrender and follow its lead? If the art we are making feels too familiar, too predictable, it’s time to shake it up, change medium, tools, style, draw with the wrong hand - anything to rediscover the lurking surprises that are inside each one of us. As your summer winds down, remember that harvest time involves art, too. Plan to bring out your best work, and your miniatures, to the BAA Fall Show and Sale at Gainan’s on Bench Boulevard in mid-September. Read about it in this issue and take part wherever the show chair, Jeanette Magstadt, can use you. It’s always a wonderful time, the grand culmination of the year’s shows, and something to anticipate. Warmly,Sincerely, Noel Hawke DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

MISSION!STATEMENT

UPCOMING 2017 EVENTS:!!

Gainan’s Exhibit and Show - September 15-16, 2017!!Remember to work on miniatures which have been very successful during the Gainan’s Exhibit

Dear fellow artists, !The other day I was listening to those loud bugs in the trees at Coulson Park. That evening I noticed the crickets had started up in our yard. My husband, Steve, listened to me say, “Wouldn’t it be fun to make a picture with all the insects that symbolize the

changing seasons – you know, gnats, mayflies, ticks, mosquitoes, dragonflies? Warmly,Sincerely, !Noel Hawke

SANDSTONE GALLERY EXHIBIT! BAA AT SUMMERFAIR!

BAA Demonstrations at 2017 YAM Summerfair !

All BAA members were invited to demo their art at Yellowstone Art Museum's fundraiser, Summerfair. During cooler morning hours, we enjoyed painting and talking with visitors to the arts and crafts fair. Located beside the shady trees where flowering plants were sold, we had breezes both days, and volunteers brought us chilled drinking water. YAM gave free admission to all demonstrating artists and their "sherpas" who helped b r i n g s u p p l i e s . M e m b e r a n d watercolorist Elizabeth Waddington showed her sketchbook containing illustrated family recipes she will compile into a cookbook for her children. Visitors to the tent learned about BAA and quite a few people seemed interested in coming to ArtShop to meet us and maybe join.

!We had a nice display of art at the Sandstone Gallery during the month of July. Thank you to Sue Hammersmark for chairing this event and for all the members who participated in the show and helped with the receptions.

A MEANINGFUL NUMBER BY NOEL HAWKE !

We always say, "The more, the merrier," don't we? Fun often rises with a group's head count. BAA membership can mean lots of energy and creative variety. In 1954 when BAA was an outpost in what seemed an "arts desert," sprouting subgroups on poetry, film, theater, music and even cooking, in addition to the visual arts. !Through the years, as people's interests have changed, the Association's activities have morphed to suit them. In recent times we gave lifetime mailing list status to some whose contributions earned them a permanent spot. We have also been quite flexible about dues, keeping people on the mailing list though dues had slipped their mind for months. !Recently, we gave thought to the opportunities that membership affords, and the volunteer help that makes those opportunities available. We reviewed the information and decided to groom the mailing list for this newsletter and for the periodic event announcements and make it match the membership list. !Membership now means that when dues are paid in April (still just $20/yr for individuals or $25 for the family) that means a year's worth of Images newsletter and event updates with announcements and changes too hot to wait for the next newsletter. There's access to monthly ArtShop coffee dates, plein air painting, news of workshops and shows, and more. !It's still a great, inexpensive and fun membership to have, no matter what your arts mediums are. BAA members "get" each other's creative minds and encourage one another with tips, techniques, ideas and friendships. And the dues and small show fees we pay support our Images Grants to art teachers at any level seeking materials funds for projects they are planning. So you who are reading this number among amateur and professional creatives eligible to take part in all that we do. A meaningful number.

MONTANA WATERCOLOR OUTFIT

Montana Watercolor Outfit returns with Lance Johnson workshop Oct. 7-8, 2017 !The Montana Watercolor Outfit is back! We’re delighted to report that the years-long series of watercolor workshops in Billings will resume this fall with a two-day session taught by respected artist and teacher Lance Johnson. !Since 1999 a group of BAA members, dubbed the “Montana Watercolor Outfit” by Tony Couch, brought workshops to Billings to provide learning opportunities for area artists we would otherwise have to go far afield to get. A few of the national and regional masters include Couch, Sterling Edwards, Frank Francese, Stan Miller, Joe Fettingis, Elliott Eaton, Marilyn Beth Hughes, Mark Mehaffey, Caroline Buchanan, and Tom Wolfe. By 2014, Lana Bittner, Madelein Bladow, and Lou Lynn asked to BAA to pick up the torch. The have shared their considerable knowledge and resources with a new team, Eva Morganthaler, Karen McBride, and Noel Hawke. !The next workshop from Montana Watercolor Outfit will be taught by Lance Johnson of Sunrise Studio in Billings. Lance is not only a seasoned instructor and well-recognized painter: he is a personable and masterful, teaching artist as well as a past Executive Director and longtime supporter of BAA. !See below for registration details, and mark your calendar so you don’t miss this valuable opportunity to expand your watercolor skills and enjoy the company of other watercolor painters. Space is limited to 25 participants. !Events: Lance Johnson - Workshop social, Friday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 PM; workshop Sat. and Sun., Oct. 7-8, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM both days. CHALK ON THE WALK, OCTOBER 14, 2017

COME AND JOIN THE FUN. !BAA is sponsoring Chalk on the Walk in coordination with the Billings Downtown Business Association. Chalk on the Walk will be held during Harvest Fest from 9 am to 4 pm on October 14, 2017, on the corner of North 28th Street and Third Avenue North by the bookstore. We need volunteers to help give out the supplies to create artwork on the walk and guide people to suitable spots. Please contact Bonnie Eldredge at [email protected] if you can participate in this artistic community project. !We encourage members to bring prepared drawings/designs to place on the walk with the oil chalks. All BAA artists are also encouraged to create on the walk. We recommend bringing garden pads or knee pads. Chalk is an interesting medium to explore. Using a water glaze will spread the color so you may want to bring a spray bottle. This is a great opportunity to show your artistic talents, 'give' to the community at large and our own community of artists.

!NEW EXHIBITION GUIDELINES AND RULES !

BAA shows provide an opportunity for member artists to display their work several times a year at low cost. Fellow members voluntarily provide show support as a service to one another. A smoothly run show goes up and comes down, in its entirety, at set times. Members who show have a responsibility to work with show chairs. !By showing at a BAA show, a member agrees to: • leave the work on display until the day the show is to be taken down, and • pick up their work in person on the day the show comes down, or • find a substitute to pick up for them and notify the show chair in advance, and • communicate any change from the above, in advance, to the show chair. !Beginning July 1, 2017, members not meeting the above requirements will • on first instance, be liable for double the entry fee for the next show, and • on second instance, be barred for two successive shows, and • on third instance, be barred from showing/selling at BAA events for one year.
