Dear ILC Families,

I am very excited to announce that the Intensive Learning Center has successfully completed the

California Gold Ribbon Schools Program application process and we will be recognized as one of 772

California Gold Ribbon Schools of 2016. This distinction of a 2016 Gold Ribbon School from the

California Department of Education reflects our success in creating a positive learning environment for all

our students. This success is only possible by working together hand in hand.

Our application highlighted our school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support program, S.O.A.R.

The framework used to develop our S.O.A.R. program is supported by the science of applied behavior

analysis, behavior data and the belief that all children can exhibit appropriate behavior when instructed and

basic socio-emotional needs are met. The intended outcome is for all our students to do well academically,

behaviorally and emotionally. Since the implementation of the S.O.A.R. program there has been a

noticeable difference in student behavior and the emphasis is now on prevention of problem behaviors and

development of pro-social skills. Please continue to review our agreement matrix included in our Parent

Handbook and ask your child what S.O.A.R. means to them. Ask them about the Gotchas, Leadership

Club, the Relaxation Station and the Career Café.

Estoy muy emocionada de anunciar que el Intensive Learning Center ha finalizado con éxito el proceso

de solicitud del Programa de Escuelas de Cinta de Oro de California y vamos a ser reconocidos como una

de las 772 Escuelas de Cinta de Oro de California del 2016. Esta distinción de una Escuela de Cinta de Oro

del 2016 del Departamento de California de Educación refleja nuestro éxito en la creación de un ambiente

de aprendizaje positivo para todos nuestros estudiantes. Este éxito sólo es posible mediante el trabajo

juntos de la mano.

Nuestra aplicación destaco nuestro programa de Apoyo de Intervención del Comportamiento Positivo a

nivel escolar, S.O.A.R. El marco utilizado para desarrollar nuestro programa de S.O.A.R. es apoyado por la

ciencia del análisis del comportamiento aplicado, datos sobre el comportamiento y la creencia de que todo

niño puede exhibir un comportamiento adecuado cuando se le indique y se satisfagan las necesidades socio

-emocionales básicas. El resultado esperado es que todos nuestros estudiantes se realicen bien

académicamente, en su comportamiento y emocionalmente. Desde la implementación del programa

S.O.A.R. ha habido una diferencia notable en el comportamiento de los estudiantes y el énfasis está ahora

en la prevención de problemas de comportamiento y el desarrollo de habilidades pro-sociales. Por favor

continúe revisando nuestra matriz de acuerdo incluido en nuestro Manual de Padres y pídale a su hijo/a lo

Hello ILC students and families,

Spring has sprung with many new PTA events coming up and occurring until the end of the

school year. We recently had Runs for Funds take place and we want to take this opportunity to

thank the Lakewood Albertsons and Pavilions for donating water to our students. With your

generous donations our students were hydrated throughout the entire event! At the annual

Variety Show we gave out our very special HSA Awards to Mr. Gerard Greenidge, the ice

cream man, Mrs. Carla Jameson, from the after school YMCA program, and we all know and

love, Mrs. Tina Coshow, our loving school clerk. Please take a minute to

congratulate them if you see them. Lastly, the upcoming events for May are the

book fair, teachers appreciation week, luncheon, and Open House. Can't wait to see

you all there!

Family Life Education

Dear Parents of Fifth and Sixth Grade Students,

As a part of our instructional program for students in fifth and sixth grade, we annually of-

fer information concerning human growth and development, which is a part of the district's

health education curriculum.

Boys and girls at each grade level will see the following:

Fifth Grade - "Always Changing" - Girls Section

"Always Changing" - Boys Section

Sixth Grade - "The New, Improved Me: Understanding Body Changes" (Girls)

"The New, Improved Me: Understanding Body Changes" (Boys)

Students will be divided into groups (fifth grade girls, sixth grade girls, fifth grade boys, sixth

grade boys) for review and discussion of the audio-visual material. These group discussions will

be led by members of our staff.

In addition, to making you aware of the instructional program, the material to be used in this

class will be available for parents to review on:

Monday, April 18th from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in room 38 or 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. in room 2 at

Ramona Elementary School, 9351 E. Laurel Street, Bellflower, CA 90706.

Friendship Like No Other

In the novel The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare, twelve-year-old

Matthew Hallowell is left to fend for himself while his father goes to bring his family

from Quincy, Massachusetts to their new cabin in Maine. After being ransacked by a

bear, robbed by an outlaw, attacked by a deadly swarm of bees, and facing a near death

experience, Matt assumes that all hope is lost. It’s not until Matt meets a resourceful yet

proud and somewhat annoying Native American does fate finally start to favor him. Matt

strikes a deal with the Native Americans and is forced to teach Attean his English ways. Throughout the novel, it

displays how two cultures can come together and form a friendship. I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5 because

I really liked how Speare made me feel like Matt himself after she described with exquisite detail how he felt

during the story. However, I wasn’t fond of how the author used the highly offensive word “squaw”. Like how

Joseph Bruchac pointed out in the beginning of the novel, it is “deeply insulting to refer to any Native American

woman as a squaw.” Besides this minor annoyance, The Sign of the Beaver is a truly influential and inspiring

novel that realistically dictates how racism is merely a mental barrier that can always be broken down. That being

said, I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Dual Immersion Parent Workshop

Our dual immersion teachers conducted a parent workshop by grade level filled with a variety of

strategies and resources that parents can use at home with their child to empower their learning.

The kindergarten workshop focused on providing parents with information and tools to reinforce

the essential reading foundational skills. In addition, parents had the opportunity to make and take

academic skills activities, such as syllable flip charts and game boards. Parents and students left

with their activities to practice at home after exploring the games together during the workshop.

The first grade dual team presented several resources available online via the Engage NY website

to support with Eureka math. Parents navigated through the website to better familiarize themselves

with it. They learned how to download the math modules and how to find lessons in English and in Span-

ish. The resources were strategically selected to enhance students' better understanding of the mathe-

matical concepts correlated with the Common Core Standards followed with examples for the parents.

The second grade workshop covered an overview of each of the eight Thinking Maps utilized by stu-

dents in class on a regular basis to help them with their thinking process. The Thinking Maps are visu-

al representations of thinking which include visual patterns linked to specific cognitive processes.

Students were very excited to see and participate in helping their parents complete several of the

Thinking Maps.

As the workshops came to an end, parents shared how happy they were with the workshop activities/

resources and were ready to use them at home with their children.

Career Cafe Our Career Café is up and running! Career Café is an opportunity for students at our school to meet individuals from the community and learn about their careers. Students who are interested (3rd-6th grade) in the weeks’ speaker are welcomed to attend the Career Café during their lunch play time on the scheduled Friday.

So far, students have met and learned about being an Assistant Principal, a City Mayor, and a UCLA Senior Program

Manager.

Career Café is an interactive setting in where students have the opportunity to hear, read, and ask the speaker about their career. “When you were little did you always know you wanted to be Mayor?”, “As Assistant Principal do you have your own mic?”, “Wow, UCLA helps people in Africa? I know where that’s at I’ve been to Egypt, it’s a long flight.” … are a few of the questions and comments made during a Career Café. Students not only get the opportunity to dialogue with the speaker, but they often leave with related items like pens, hats, flash-drives, bags, and pamphlets in relation to the career. Both teachers and students have expressed how much they’ve enjoyed Career Café and always look forward to the next one! We are always looking for our next Career Café speaker, please let us know if you would like to be one of our guest speakers, or know of someone who would be a great speaker at one of our Career Cafés!
