World trade: what prospects for growth?
On the basis of recent trends in food, feed and industrial uses, world trade in grains and oilseeds is expected to expand by 2% in 2012/13, with projections for the next five years adding some 50m. tons to the total. However, many uncertainties remain, not least those connected with global economic prospects. Regardless of the total volume traded, a free-flowing and transparent international market in grains is vital, especially in view of ongoing food security concerns. With these issues in mind, leading industry personalities and national policy makers will examine the underlying factors driving international markets, addressing the challenges being faced at a time of major global financial worries.
