Organ Donation The Gift of Life

When I sat down to write an article about organ donation, what kept botheringme was, why is this even an issue??? I personally feel this is the most senselessissue that I have ever come across! Dont get me wrong, not because it isntimportant but what I cant wrap my mind around iswhy is it a topic of
debate?? A clause for persuasion? Just to make sure we are on the same pagehere - Are we talking about organ donation - The greatest of humanitarian act aperson can do for a fellow being?
What each one of us carry, within us has ability to give a secondchance at life, which is to perpetuate life after we are gone, whydo we still have to think about, whether to donate or not? WhatI fail to process is that, is there any logical reason at all to denysomeone less fortunate than us the greatest gift ever - the Gift
of Life. I mean why should we have to go through a procedureof signing up for OD at all? Instead there should be a registrationprocess for people who might want to waver with selfishness.
Why do I feel so strongly for it? I think you will surely find your answer in these mindboggling statistics: In India, we have only 0.08 donors per million populationswhich mean only 2% of kidney transplant requirements and 3% of liver transplantrequirements are met in India. And friends, let me remind you- these are not justnumbers. These figures represent a person - someones child, someones parentor siblingsomeones family desperately waiting for a second chance for life.
Where you think your organs are needed more- heaven or earth? Think about it.
Now, if I may ask, like many others I see around me, are you too skeptical aboutOD? Are these, the questions that bug you: Is it a religious misconduct? Will itcost me money? Would my body be disfigured after the harvesting process? Isthe registration irreversible? Am I too young or too old for OD? Well, the answer toall these questions is no! In our hearts, we all dream/wish for different things:success, love, money, etc., but the sad truth is- some dream of making it to theirnext birthday!! For someone you can be a breath of fresh air, a shimmering ray of
light, a heartbeatthe miracle of life! Somebody is cryingsomebody beggingin pain for a new organ.a new life. Dont take them to the grave with you! Ifyou are not an organ donor, remember, when you die, someone dies with you.

We pay our tribute to the martyr soldiers; Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh & HemrajSingh who were killed in the recent incidents at L.O.C, Kashmir on 6th ofJanuary. We as medical students strongly condemn the violation of cease fire &we also feel this will only derail the process of peace and friendship betweenthe two nations. It is our hope that our neighbours will look into this matter withgreat sensitivity and hope peace will be restored. On behalf of IFMSA-INDIA ,we express condolence to the families of the soldiers.
