The mission statement of IFMSA reads, “Our mission is to offer future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. Through our programming and opportunities, we develop culturally sensitive students of medicine, intent on influencing the trans-national inequalities that shape the health of our planet.”

Activities: The main activities of IFMSA are student exchanges and different projects.

Around 10, 000 medical students each year participate in international medical student exchanges, both professional and academic (research).

IFMSA organizes projects, programs, seminars and workshops on areas of public health, medical education, reproductive health and human rights and peace.

Organization: All activities of the IFMSA are linked to one of its six standing committees, which are: Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE) Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SCORA) Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP)

IFMSAInternational Federation ofMedical Students’ Associations

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations(IFMSA) is a non- governmental organiza-tion representing associations of medical students. It was founded in May 1951, and currently maintains 108 National Member Organizations Worldwide.

Introduction to IFMSAIFMSA-Egypt is an independent, non-governmental and non-political federa-tion of medical students’ associations in Egypt.

IFMSA-Egypt is a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) which represents 108 National Member Organizations in 100 Countries with more than 1.2 million medical stu-dents worldwide.

IFMSA-Egypt is run for and by medical students on a non-profit and volun-tary basis. We represent all Egyptian Medical students, through 19 Local Committees (LCs) all over Egypt.

IFMSA-Egypt’s unique structure, composed of 6 Standing Committees and the Training Support Division, allows all medical students to simply contrib-ute, innovate and have an influence on Global Health.

Mission To offer future Egyptian physicians a comprehensive introduction to public health issues by taking part in the international medical student community to broaden their spectrums and reach their full potential.

1968 -1969 The highlight of our history is most definitely the beginning!

In 1968-1969, a group of inspired Egyptian medical students had the idea and enthusiasm to establish a medical students’ network to rep-resent Egyptian medical students nationally and internationally and that was under our former name of the Egyptian Medical Students Association (EMSA-Egypt).

Introduction to IFMSA - EGYPT

IFMSA- Egypt’s history has been a long and remarkable one. We would like to share with you only a mere glimpse of our history:

The establishment of our organization came from a pure will to serve fellow medical students and to better represent a country that was facing difficult political times at that period. So, during the 1968 -1969 term, EMSA-Egypt (currently known as IFMSA-Egypt) joined IFMSA, crown-ing the efforts of two hard working years.

1972 -1973, IFMSA-Egypt started off with a small number of members, who were keen enough to approach all Egyptian medical students. They were able to inspire, motivate and empower more medical students to propagate the message and take similar steps to establish Local Committees (LCs) to represent medical students in their universities and in the national medical student body. Ever since the term of 1972, IFMSA-Egypt has been representing all Egyptian medical students countrywide.

2006 -2007, Another highlight in our history, a group of medical students representing our organization, at that time, felt that our ‎ef-forts for international recognition are slightly hindered by the lack of strong association in our organization’s name to IFMSA.

This is in turn was a drawback on our promotion and marketing strategies. And so, a proposal to change the name of EMSA Egypt to IFMSA – Egypt was made in the IFMSA General Assembly held in August 2007 ( Canterbury, UK) which gained the support and approval of all at-tending National Member Organizations. This unanimous stand declared IFMSA’s support to this unique step to better improve our organization’s image.

2011-2012, IFMSA-Egypt is a Legally Recognized Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Registered at the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity under license Number “3115”

About SCOME

SCOME Vision : Our vision is that medical students attain an optimal professional and personal develop-ment to reach their full potential as future doctors for better health care worldwide.

SCOME Mission :

Our mission is to be the frame in which medical students worldwide contribute to the development of medical education. Students convene in SCOME to share and learn about medical education in order to improve it as well as benefit the most from it on a personal and professional basis.

We support active involvement in education on an individual level encouraging stu-dents to take the initiative and responsibility for their education both curricular and extra-curricular, through: seeking educational experiences and opportunities for further develop-ment, participating in extracurricular activities that simultaneously enrich them and benefit their peers or the community, collaborating with the faculties by forming and expressing informed opinions and providing appropriate feedback in an effort to elicit necessary change, as well as with national and international bodies in order to contribute to global improvement of medical education.

We organize projects that promote and provide opportunities and tools for medical stu-dents to improve their knowledge and pursue their goals, provide information to students about relevant issues in their education, centralize students’ opinions, facilitate communication with the faculties or other institutions.

We seek to promote best evidence medical education practices for efficient delivery, advocate for improvements in faculties, national medical education systems and international guidelines.

Through all our joint efforts we work to create sustainable changes around the world, for our-selves as medical students, for the generations to come and for our future patients and our com-munities who are in fact the final beneficiaries of our education.

Responsibility: We take responsibility for our actions and education and act towards im-proving it.Communication: We exchange experience, knowledge and opinions, and carry out our activities with complete transparency.Collaboration: We work together towards common goals as medical students and also with other stakeholders.Engagement: We involve and welcome all medical students in our actions.Empowerment: We aim to motivate as well as provide the knowledge and skills needed to facilitate the efforts and drive change.Creativity: We constantly look for new solutions and innovative ideas.

SCOME StructureIFMSA-Egypt ( as in every national member organisation of IFMSA ) elects a National Officer on Medical Education (NOME). His/her task is to coordinate and encourage local or national activities in the respective country. The NOMEs are also responsible for communicating with and reporting to the SCOME Director. NOMEs attend the international IFMSA meetings in March and August respectively. At these meetings they can network with other NOMEs, exchange ideas and attain new knowledge and motivation to bring back home to the Local and National Committees.

The Local Officers on Medical Education (LOMEs) are in charge of local improvement in Medical Education and related activities at the different local medical faculties of a Na-tional Member Organisation ( IFMSA-Egypt ). They are elected locally and are responsible for tackling local problems. The LOMEs shall communicate with and report to the NOME.

The NOME is the head of the national team and the official speaker of IFMSA-Egypt

Internal communication:Our best tool to learn and improve our skills, find ideas and learn about experiences is com-munication with each other. To guarantee this exchange of experiences and knowledge, we created several settings and strategies:

During the IFMSA-Egypt General Assemblies (at least, 4 GAs/year ), every Standing Committee has its own working committee meetings. The biggest part of the time we use to exchange experiences and learn from each other. This is a forum, where everyone gets a chance to present his problems and solutions. We further work in training workshops, where a small group creates and prepares a training. To make this process more effective LOMEs should present their work in written reports and/or posters. Very important are also the informal meetings in between.

VISIONTo make Egyptian healthcare system a safe and healthy doctor-doctor-patient relationship based on trust and faith

MISSIONProviding knowledge to medical undergraduate students regarding the six pillars of medical ethics, and how they can abide by them in their professional life after graduation, to raise the quality of the healthcare system

GOALS

Good Medical practice

Providing a framework for medical students to work within when communicating with patients, and doctors

Ensure medical students understand their rights and responsibilities

Deliver the six values of medical ethics: Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Justice, Respect for persons, & Honesty to all medical students

To make Egyptian healthcare system a safe and healthy platform for doctor-doctor-patient relationship based on trust and faith. It aims to increase awareness among medical students about the content of medical ethics as well as

advocate for implementing a system to ensure ethical conduct in hospitals

a human thingDying

Dying - a human thingDying: A human thing is a transnational project that is done in IFMSA-Egypt , as well as Tunisia (Associa-med Tunisia) and poland (IFMSA-poland)

Medical universities teach their students mechanism of a human body. Unfortunately, in many cases it is not enough. When it comes to terminally ill people it is not pharmacology or physio pathology that really matters. We want to teach future doctors how to give support to dying people. Very often a simple conversation can be more helpful than sophisticated medicine. Through the workshop, the project aims to answer questions like: “How to reveal fatal diagnosis to a patient?”, “How to talk to a family of a dying patient?”

“How to support my patient?” Sometimes the most obvious questions are the most difficult ones.

The aim of the action is to create future doctors who will be ready to work with terminally ill patients

Medical Education Students’ National Awareness Campaign

It is a medical education awareness campaign. It is the first of its kind to be directed to the medical education issues. The campaign targets the med-ical students in the different faculties of medicine in Egypt.

Each year , a theme is chosen that is relevant to the current medical education problems in Egypt and throughout the whole year, activities and awareness campaigns are targeted to reach the projects outcomes. Last year, the theme of the project was about Research and Research meth-odology which aimed to increase awareness among medical students on how to perform a research and opportunities available for medical students to participate in research

Post Graduation BookletAims to Increase medical student knowledge about postgraduate options whether national or international. Provide an up-to-date reli-able source of information ( booklet ) regarding regulations & proce-dures of various postgraduate options.

This includes information regarding rules, regulations, procedures, fees, frequently asked questions, and short comparisons in an at-tempt to make it clearer for anyone reading the booklet

Provide an up-to-date reliable source of information regarding regulations & procedures of various postgraduate options

Beside the various projects taking place at a local and national level to improve medical education at the faculties, there are a number of international projects and workshops taking place under the

umbrella of the IFMSA network.

Structure and Objectives: The World Federation for Medical Education was founded in 1972 and has its office in Copenhagen, Denmark. The federation serves today with the purpose of being an umbrella organisation for its region-al associations for medical education, following the regional structure of the World Health Organisation. Four other institutions related to the field of medical education are also members of the WFME Execu-tive Council.

The four institutions are: • WHO – World Health Organisation • WMA – World Medical Association • ECFMG – Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates • IFMSA – International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations

WFME aims at enhancing the quality of medical education world-wide, taking initiatives with respect to new methods, new tools and new management. It covers all phases of medical education (graduate education, specialist training and continuing medical education).

The general objective of WFME is “to strive for the highest scientific and ethical standards in medical education, taking initiatives with respect to new methods, new tools, and management of medical education”. The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) was founded in 1972 in Copenhagen (Denmark) to foster communication among medical educators and to help promote national associations for medi-cal education throughout Europe. It is the European regional association of the World Federation for Medi-cal Education (WFME).

Several European national medical education associations are corporate members of AMEE. Over the past decade AMEE has developed steadily both in size and in the sphere of its activities and is now a worldwide association with members and contacts in over 90 countries.

AMEE helps teachers, doctors, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers, assessors and students keeping up to date with developments in the rapidly changing world of medical and healthcare profes-sions education.

AMEE’s activities include the annual conferences, Publications including Medical Teacher and AMEE edu-cation guides, courses such as ESME, FAME and RESME, projects including BEME and MedEdCentral, and Special Interest Groups.

National partners: It is one of the main goals being aimed at by SCOME team members is to make some external partners interested in medical education because our aim is the same and we can get great ben-efit from them and we can also exchange experience with them in the field of medical education and we must keep in contact with them and any further organizations that me help us in our mis-sion.

For now, SCOME has two official partners in Egypt:

1. National Research Center (NRC) :

Which is an independent Egyptian public organization that aims to foster basic and applied scientific research,particularlyin industrey,agricualture,public health and other sectors of na-tional economy. It is the target of all institutions affiliated to the ministry of scientific research in Egypt and employes about 60% of all scientists working in these institutions.

2. National Agency for Quality Assurance Accreditation (NAQAAE): Is the accrediting body for all Egyptian educational institutions (higher education,pre-univer-sity and Al-Azhar education). Their main goal is to support Egyptian institutes by fostering their quality assurance practices.
