FROM THE PRESIDENT....

Whoosh…and there it went. Summer exited quickly and September—well—it’s been a blur. For many of us, September is the emotional beginning of a new year, and if your calendar looked anything like mine, there is no doubt it’s back to business.

At IFDA, our business is constantly changing. We are charged with keeping up with the needs of the industry and of our members. Which is why we set out this year to accomplish specific goals:

Build collaboration and engage thought leaders to discuss design-related issues with the power to impact our future;

Cultivate relationships; serve as a catalyst for industry information, and help advance professional development — here and abroad;

Use our unique membership to partner with local organizations to employ design to improve lives and forward cultural development.

September was a watershed month for us. We can boast improved communications; more effective, open networking; targeted programming, and industry collaborations that have led to inspiring new events like the recent wallcoverings panel discussion at Hearst Tower (made possible by our partners, Hearst Design Group, Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and York Wallcoverings).

I'm also pleased to report that proceeds from our 2015 Take a Seat Chairs for Charity sponsored a team of 10 IFDA members at last month's Habitat for Humanity Women Build Blitz event. Our uniquely diversified membership was put to work helping build affordable housing for low-income families on three project-sites in Queens.

Proud of these accomplishments and determined to carry out other initiatives set for the coming year, I am delighted to stay on as Chapter President in 2016. With the help of our 2017 President-Elect, Richard Segal, I am confident that our Chapter goals will be met and IFDA will continue to grow.

The Fall season is a perfect time to set your own new goals. Make IFDA one of them. Between now and December 31, 2015, join IFDA as a Professional Member and enjoy a special promotional rate, $350.00, that covers your dues through December 31, 2016. It's easy, too: click here to sign up.

IFDA Spotlight On: Richard Segal An "overnight" success? Never mind that Richard Segal, President-elect of the NY Chapter, joined IFDA less than a year ago: he brings 32 years of design industry experience -- and booming enthusiasm -- to the top job he will assume when current President Andrea Brodfuehrer steps down in late 2016.

Owner of Metropolitan Hardware & Bath, LLC., a 2,700-sq. ft. resource in Brooklyn, Richard started in the business as a high schooler -- No, even earlier: his mother was an owner of Amaru Tile (showroom in the Decoration & Design

Building) and 14-year-old Richard helped out in the company's Long Island warehouse. A lifetime in the business has only honed his appetite for "product," says Richard, who subtitles his two-year-old gallery "A toy store to the trade."

"I love good, well-made product," he enthuses. "I get a real charge when something new comes in." That's happening a lot these days: he's working on a private label collection to be launched next year.

In the midst of all this, why take on the IFDA leadership, too? "I'd been attending events before I decided to become a member. I like the idea behind IFDA, that it's not just about designers, it's a more fleshed-out organization." (Besides, Richard confided, "Su Hilty threatened me if I didn't join!")

The Chapter is already "on a good trajectory" thanks to its current leadership, Richard observes. "But I can see huge potential for growth. New York is a mecca of design."

Step Back into Design History: IFDA EF Tours the MET Collection

Coming up Sat., October 10, the next walk benefiting the IFDA Educational Foundation will follow Gordon Frey, FIT professor of the History of Interior Design, through the magnificent period rooms and American Wing furniture collection at the Metropolitan Museum on Art.

Professor Frey interned at the American Wing and now guides visitors during their explorations of the museum and its treasures.

"Learn the differences between the New York, Boston, and Rhode Island furniture styles, and how each piece of furniture fit into the lifestyles of their owners," promises Susan Hirsh, VP Educational Foundation.

The tour meets at the Met's Fifth Ave entrance (82nd St.) at 9:45 a.m. with an optional Dutch treat lunch to follow. Tour fees ($40 IFDA members, $50 non-members) will benefit the IFDA/EF Valerie Moran Grant. Tour size is limited.

New York was hot in every sense of the word — The City sweltered through an official Heat Wave, and hoards headed for the Hamptons — but there also were a lot of cool things going on at IFDA.

CRYSTAL CLEAR — No wonder the newly opened and Parisian-elegant Baccarat Hotel and Residence (across from MoMA on W. 53rd) attracted a festive summer crowd for Cocktails, Conversations & Connections including Jacob Herskovitz (left) and James Rixner— they don’t serve up bar drinks in plastic glasses, you know!

Christine Jacobs -- Now the owner and Chief Tile Officer of Hudson Tile Supply, a boutique to-the-trade tile showroom on Seventh Ave., Christine has logged 20+ years in creative industries (book and magazine publishing, creative studio,

marketing communications agency) and spent five years in architectural sales at Nemo Tile before launching her own firm.

AnnMarie Negretti --- A recent graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology with an A.A.S. degree in Interior Design. Currently, working on several independent design projects, AnnMarie's path to the design world has been anything but conventional. Growing up in in a creative family in Queens, New York, she developed her love of art and design at a young age. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Nutritional Science from Queens College. Although her post graduate work as a Nutrition Counselor was interesting, AnnMarie had a strong desire to pursue more creative endeavors. This brought her to the the New York Botanical Garden Floral Design program. From which she began a career in floral design before opening her own floral design company. That later expanded into a decorative home

accessories business. This, in addition to several home renovation projects led her to pursue her passion for Interior Design with a formal education and a membership in the IFDA.

Rikki Tenenbaum -- Currently studying at the New York School of Interior Design -- she graduates next year with a BFA in Interior Design -- Rikki is also a design associate at the renowned design firm of IFDA member James Rixner. Earlier, Rikki served an internship with Donghia, Inc.

Adam Skalman -- Trade Program Director, The Shade Store, Port Chester, NY. IFDA'S new international Platinum Sponsor, The Shade Store is a custom window treatments company with a rich heritage in luxury textiles and interior design. Adam, a 15-year veteran of the home décor industry, works to build national awareness of The Shade Store within the high-end design community. Color yourself alert to what's going on in the world around you if you want to keep ahead of trends, says mega-successful designer/entrepreneur/trend forecaster Stacy Garcia, NY Chapter Gold Sponsor.

"Technology, politics, the environment, and the economy all spur new trends," she told the NYNow color forum sponsored by the IFDA NY Chapter and Pratt & Lambert. Other trend "drivers" include art, fashion, media, and entertainment, Stacy said.

At Stacy Garcia (one of two thriving fashion companies she's built since her 26th birthday, LebaTex and Stacy Garcia design house), the product development process always begins with trend forecasting, she said. "It's our job as designers to edit these color trends and create an updated color palette for consumers...."

Six Trends Stacy Foresees for 2016:

1. Blush & Plush: Reflects a growing desire to disconnect from technology and unwind. Look for neutral colors like oatmeal, buttery creams, toasted almond, and materials that muffle sound: fur, felt, Neoprene, suede, macramé, and crochet.

2. Gentlemen: “Handsome-but-roughed-up” interior décor and an emphasis on craftsmanship. The palette will be nostalgic with neutrals like taupe, camel, tobacco, and cognac with pops of color. Materials favor menswear —inspired textiles, industrial elements, metals, reclaimed woods.

3. Art-Inspired: A "bright, bold, and flamboyantly playful" trend to hyper-color and a surreal sensibility. Unapologetic hyper-neons, and saturated jewel tones with painterly techniques: watercolors, brush strokes, color blocking.

4. Classic Revival: Greco-Roman classicism offers a new direction for traditional and for luxury, with an educated, high-end, well-traveled appeal. Colors include black, white, gold, red, and Santorini blue. Materials are marble, stone, and silk; graphic patterns, and classics, like Greek keys, columns, and acanthus leaves.

5. Surfaces: A hyper customization and personalized trend, all about new and futuristic surfaces in a new blend of architecture and nature. It's less about colors than surfaces, but construction is pertinent. Expect iridescence, highly polished, and reflectivity.

6. Urban Nomad: Festival--inspired, drawing ideas from global influences and nomadic expeditions. Speaks to the independent creative with vintage ideas like wallpaper, wood-paneled walls, and shag rugs in colors like indigo and natural dyes, spice tones, jewels against tones of cement and cashmere. Materials include overall pattern-on-pattern: henna-inspired patterns, paisleys, suede and tooled leather, fringe, feathers, and wicker.

TOTALLY ON TREND — Chapter Sponsor Stacy Garcia forecast the colors and materials of the future at the trend seminar opening NY NOW in

FROM DRUGS TO RUGS (AND PILLOWS) -- After a long career in medicine and pharmaceuticals, IFDAer Jay Sethi is now working to cure some of the world's ills with good design.

It all started during a trip to India once he retired after spending 12 years on staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY. He'd done his post-doctoral training in cancer research there before joining the pharmaceutical corporate world (as a senior executive at Novartis and Sanofi- Synthelabo in their Neurology and Oncology Divisions).

Visiting the Kashmir Valley in the Himalayas, Dr. Jay says he was fascinated by the crewel-stitch embroidered work used by local artisans in creating hand-made woolen rugs and pillows, many with floral, sea world, and animal kingdom themes.

"This work is a profound expression of the skills and the creative urge of the Kashmiri artisans," says Jay, who launched his new company, J & S International, to promote the art and provide support to the artisans. "Which is what matters to me the most," he reports. "This is my new world and I love it !"

MARTHA BRANDWEIN may be racking up accolades (and sales) as an artist -- two of her paintings sold

opening night of a juried show at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta, ME, where she summers -- but Martha is still holding onto her career as a celebrated textile designer. Look for her next new sheet design at Intercontinental Hotels this fall.

"I maintain my textile connection by working on projects in the five-star boutique hospitality area," she explains. "It's hard to let go of my love of textiles."

SUSAN SLOTKIS, member of the IFDA Speakers’ Bureau, has been selected to be a seminar speaker at the 13th iteration of NeoCon East, which will be held in Philadelphia for the first time, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The organizers have scheduled her IDCEC-approved CEU Color Psychology & Perception for October 28th from 2:30 – 3:30 pm.

Also on tap: a book-signing of Susan's impressive tome, Foundations of Interior Design, 2nd edition.

ALSO ON THE CEU CIRCUIT -- It's been a busy summer, smiles IFDA NY Chapter secretary Julie Schuster, Julie Schuster Design Studio. First, she presented a June session on Feng Shui to fellow designers and architects at a NY gathering sponsored by Lefroy Brooks. At another Feng Shui session in September, Julie helped raise funds for Pink Aid, Long Island, Breast Cancer at Mitchell Gold+ Bob Williams in Manhasset, NY.

In July, she and Susan Slotkis (see above) teamed up to teach Susan's NYU design students why it's important to develop resource relationships within the industry and join industry organizations (like IFDA).

Next up: Robert Allen has invited Julie to the D&D showroom during fall market next month to tell fellow design professionals how to make the most of Houzz, the six-year-old, now-international online photo data base focused on decorating and remodeling.

ANGELO DONGHIA: DESIGN SUPERSTAR -- Cool, elegant, mega-talented, Angelo Donghia is still influencing interior design 30 years after his death. The NY School of Interior Design exhibition on the Superstar

opened this month and runs through December. Also, see the special issue of New York Magazine/Winter 2016 that features this titan of our industry.

ELLEN DeGENERES introduced her first decorative accessories and home furnishings collection at Bergdorf Goodman in September in a pop-up shop on the store's 7th floor (to Sept. 30). The intro of the ED by Ellen Decorative Home Collection drew such boldfacers as Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Robin Roberts, and Diane Sawyer to the opening. The luxury priced home goods were to be available at stores only through Sept. 22. DeGeneres also has a partnership with QVC, which is selling less expensive homewares.

Observes IFDA VP Hermine Mariaux, "Unlike a lot of other celebrities, she really knows her home decorating stuff. She's owned and decorated multiple homes of her own, so this is a real personal passion.”

LEAF THROUGH THESE THIS FALL -- Metropolis magazine knows a good industry read when it sees one...actually, there are 50 design-oriented books on its you-should-read-these list. Click here to view the list.

The exhibition will feature original artwork, including rarely seen hand-drawn sketches, paintings and sculptures, revealing how Pixar develops popular characters, and fosters emotional connection to its films. Opens October 8; through August 7, 2016.

MAD (MUSEUM of ARTS & DESIGN) -- Wendell Castle Remastered will be the first museum exhibition to examine the digitally crafted works of Wendell Castle, acclaimed figure of the American art furniture movement.
