The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decision Roe v. Wade reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help and our prayers will be heard. As a nation, we are called to take pause and to pray, fast, and offer penance, especially on Monday, Jan. 22 nd , for the legal protection of all unborn children and for the promotion of a culture of life. May our hearts and prayers be with all of those lost from an abortion and with all of the mothers and fathers suffering from its effects. DearSt.Athanasius&St.FrancisParishioners:Jesus,attheLastSupper,prayedthatallofus“maybeone”asHeand His Heavenly Father, with the Holy Spirit, are One. Hespecifically prayed for his Apostles and he also specifically prayedforus, aswell—wewhobelieveinHimbythewordsoftheApostles, handed down in Tradition, written down in Scripture. And eventhough, today, we see many different Christian congregations, separated by buildings, split up by varying beliefs, divided bydifferent forms ofworship, Jesus’s prayer did not go unheard thatnight that hewas betrayed. Ever since then, through themerits ofHisPassionandCrossandbythepowerofhisResurrection, theHolySpirithasbeenconstantlyatworkleadingallpeopletowardsunity:a unity of faith, a unity of charity, a unity of hope.Wehave yet torealize that fully, but itdoesn’tmeanthat itcan’thappenorwon’t;becauseitcanhappenanditwill!Butuntilthen,wemustbepatientandjoinourheartstotheprayerofourLord(Jn17)andallowtheHoly Spirit to work through us to accomplish His task.
