Informational Essay: Write a 3-4 page research paper about the United States during the Reconstruction Era. Include major events, newspaper headlines, important people, and anything else you find interesting.

A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 6 GLASSES by Tom Standage (2005)
The particular book you have been assigned to read is one that provides an excellent and thought provoking look at world history
through the humble beverage. What we drink is something most people take for granted, not giving their potables a second
thought. As you will learn throughout this class; everything, from what we drink to the clothes we wear, from the technology we
use; to the religion we practice; everything has an interrelated history.
ASSIGNMENTS
1. Reading Questions: The questions provided for this book are meant to jump start your historical
thinking skills. It is not enough to read about history; you must learn to “do” history.
2. Create a cover page for PERIOD 1: Students will create a magazine add as for period one (BEER). Include an image,
tagline, health benefits, beer’s relationship to early civilizations, and year of issue (which will be the years of the time
period).

Summer Reading Assignment: AP Literature 2017 AP Literature and Composition AP Literature and Composition
AP Government and AP MicroEconomics Overview: The purpose of summer reading is to provide students an introduction to the style and quality
of literature that they will encounter in a 12th grade AP Literature course. Your commitment to these assignments will give you a head start, which will prepare you for the upco ming year,
the AP class, the AP exam, your college career and beyond. This year you will have the option
to choose between an AP-Aligned piece of literature and a high-interest novel.
The Advanced Placement class will focus on close readings of multiple texts. A close reading
involves a careful analysis of passages leading to synthesis with the larger work. This year you
will also get to choose from a list of creative summer assignment activities to engage with your chosen work.
In addition to optimizing the power of choice this year, the grade that students receive from
their AP Literature & Composition summer assignment will also be utilized as a summative
grade for AP U.S. Government & Politics.
Texts: May 22nd is the deadline to purchase your book THIS YEAR and to sign up for Edmodo. You must show your book to your CURRENT homeroom teacher ON May 22nd for grade.

High-Interest Novel: Suzanne Collins – The Hunger Games
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining
Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long ago the districts waged war on the
Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send
one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games,"
a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with
her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to
represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation

Extra Credit (Optional Assignment): Students will receive 5 extra credit points on the end of course exam in December that counts for 15% of their grade for AP U.S. Government & Politics. Students have the option to write a 3-4 page paper that compares the government in 1984 or The Hunger Games to the U.S. government. Additionally, students are required to cite specific examples from either 1984 or The Hunger Games and compare them to similar situations in the U.S. These will be turned in the first week of school.
