But what is ice? Ice is very, very cold water!

Page 5: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Water is made up of tiny, tiny, tiny little water molecules. Water molecules are called H20, which looks like this.

Page 7: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Water can be liquid—we call this liquid water.

If water gets very hot, like when somebody puts a pot of water on the stove, it boils,

Page 10: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 11: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

and if it gets even hotter than that, it makes steam.

Page 12: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 13: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

But what happens when water gets cold? Water freezes

solid, like a rock—which we call ice, or water ice.

Page 14: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Water turns to steam when it is 212 degrees—that is hot!

Page 16: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 17: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

But water freezes, and turns to ice at 32 degrees—that’s

cold enough for hat and mittens.

Take some water,

Page 20: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 21: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

put it into an ice cube tray,

Page 22: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 23: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

wait for the water to freeze, and out come ice cubes!

Page 24: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 25: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

We use ice cubes to keep a drink cold.

Page 26: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 27: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

If the air is warm, like it is in the house, an ice cube will melt. That means the ice

turns back into water!

Page 28: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 29: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

If you put many ice cubes in warm air, they will melt, and

become liquid again.

Page 30: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 31: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Other things can melt, and become liquid; butter can

melt.

Page 32: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 33: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

When the weather gets warm, snow and ice melts. First, it

becomes slush,

Page 34: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 35: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

and then it becomes water.

Page 36: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 37: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Ice can be very pretty, like when icicles hang from a

house,

Page 38: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 39: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

or when ice covers tree branches.

Page 41: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Sometimes, rain freezes when it is falling. This is called

freezing rain.

Page 43: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 44: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

This coats everything with ice, which can be pretty,

Page 45: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 46: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

but it can also cover power lines.

Page 48: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 49: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

and that can make the power go out!

Page 50: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

In the winter, when it gets very cold,

Page 52: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 53: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

creeks can freeze over,

Page 54: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 55: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

and rivers can freeze over,

Page 56: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 57: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

and lakes can freeze over—so people can even drive on

them, sometimes!

Roads can get icy in winter,

Page 60: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

You can slip and fall when you walk on ice!

Page 64: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun

Glaciers are made of ice.

Page 68: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
Page 69: Ice. You can go skating on ice, and that can be fun
