reer Specialist at Irmo Middle School. In my role as Career Specialist, I will beassisting all 7th and 8th graders in career awareness and exploration.

    What is a Career?

The most common answer is a Job. A Career is the combi-nation of your Education, Training and the Jobs you haveduring your lifetime. As part of the Career Exploration pro-gram, weeducate students on the relevance of their academics to therealworld of work. We also teach students the requirements and how to prepare forthe future Career opportunities that will be available upon graduation. There areseveral ways to do career exploration likecareer speakers, job shadowing and internships.

Career Speakers are invited throughout the year to speak to our classes to sharetheir career path and the relevance it has to academics today. If you are willing toshare your career

experiences with our students and teachers, we would appreciate your participa-tion, please contact Allison Redick, Career Specialist at 476-3668 or email [email protected].

Dan Koon is the father of Anna who is a 7th grader at IMS. Dan Koon writesI believe our biggest challenge is integrating technology into the classroom in a way that will engage our stdents, increase learning, and prepare students for college and careers. I previously served on the IMS SICfrom 2007- 2012, and chaired the IMS SIC from 2010 2012. I also served on the District 5 Parent AdvisoCouncil. I describe myself as loyal, compassionate, analytical, trustworthy, and dedicated. I would like to

serve on the IMS SIC as I want to be involved in my childs school and to be of service to my community. Ienjoy researching family genealogy and local history and am a farmer at heart. I am a strong proponent opublic education.

Hayley Gossett is the mother of Caroline who is an 8th grader at IMS. Hayley Gossett writesI think it will be a challenge to make sure ALL schools in our district are held to high performance standard

and provide rigorous and exciting programs for our students. Balancing the programs at the schools throuout the district and having enough funding for all the new schools and programs will continue to be a chal-lenge that we face as a community, as well as recruiting the most highly qualified staff. My volunteer posi-tions have been IES PTA President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Volunteer Coordinator CRMS fundraising IMS PTSO Treasurer, Membership, Fundraiser, Secretary, IHS membership and fundraising. I habeen on SIC at IES and IMS several different times over the years and have been a homeroom parent matimes. Being on SIC is a wonderful way to be involved in various aspects of the school. I greatly enjoy kno

ing what is happening at the school and district level and helping to make decisions and provide guidance needed. This is an exciting and challenging time at IMS and I would love the opportunity t be on SIC. I amvery big fan of the Irmo schools and have had 4 children either graduate or still attend Irmo cluster schoolsThey have had a wonderful experience and I want it to continue. I also teach in District 5 and have experi-ences as an employee as well as a parent and citizen.

    L. Thomas Solet is the father of Devon who is a 7th grader at IMS. L. Thomas Solet writesDistrict 5 must continue to be active in recruiting and retaining staff who hold a high standard of academicachievement and motivation. I have not held any previous volunteer positions in the past for any school. Idescribe myself as tenacious, loyal, grounded, sensible, and creative. I am interested in furthering the opptunities the school has by adding my experience to the conversation. A Louisiana native, Im a father of twgreat kids and husband to a wonderful woman. I have traveled globally for the medical industry and look fward to serving District 5 and Irmo Middle.

Rachel Ray is the mother of David who is a 7th grader at IMS. Rachel Ray writesI believe the biggest challenge the district faces is keeping up with technology and being able to implementhroughout the district. I describe myself as loyal, dedicated, determined, consistent, and passionate. Impaing the future generations is so important to me. If we fail any students in any way, we have failed. I try toeverything within my own knowledge, skills and understanding to teach my own children and would like to the same for others at IMS. I have 2 other children in LexRich 5 as well.

Vasanthi Jayaram is the mother of Sunjay who is an 8th grader at IMS. Vasanthi Jayaram writesThe biggest challenge our district faces is improving the school climate to infuse a culture of pride in aca-demic achievement. I have been an open volunteer at Irmo Elementary School and Crossroads MiddleSchool to be contacted and assigned tasks in any area/activity in the school that needs volunteers. Severayears ago, I also volunteered to initiate a math enrichment program at Harbison West Elementary. I describ

myself as a problem solver, creative, hardworking, pragmatic, and genuine. This is my third year (my daugter is a sophomore at Irmo High School) at Irmo Middle School. I have seen a lot of wonderful changes takplace in the school during my tenure here and would like to contribute, if I can, to the process. The focus omy work at USC is educational research. I am from India and could bring an international perspective to thdiscussions. Lastly, I strongly believe that education is the number one solution to most of the problems inthe world.
