Change in weather is a major factor in producing asthmatic episodes. Many of ourstudents have compromised respiratory status during this time of year. As you know,strong scents such as colognes, deodorants, and perfumed hand/ body lotions are an

allergen for many individuals, possibly causing an asthmatic attack for some stu-dents. Parents, we are asking you take this under consideration as you arepreparing your student to school each morning. Parents, please be advisedthat if your student is wearing strong scented cologne, deodorant, or hand lotion atschool and another student is having respiratory issues in that class, the teacher hasbeen informed to speak with these students discreetly and ask them to go to therestroom to wash off the scented substance with soap and water (those studentswith mild deodorants, etc. will not be impacted by this practice). This will protectall of our students. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation in this important

health issue.

You can help in the following ways: PTSO membership of $7 Volunteering to help in school events

Using your grocery tags to help us earn money

Participating in our donation fundraiser (costs you less and helps us

more, than selling products or coupon books)

Using your grocery tags to help us earn money and sending in baked goods or

chili when we hold those events!!

Chick-Fil-A biscuit sales are Friday, October 4th! We are ordering more biscuits

this time, but come early if you want to be sure to get one!

Chicken Biscuits $3, Water $1

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held toward the end of October, so watch for news

on that. We will be sending home information on all of the above as soon as we get all

of our grocery program information in (there have been some changes, so when you

PTSO Notes...

Thank you all for your support so far for the PTSO. Our organization helpsthe school directly, by providing volunteers to help with events, sponsor-

ing teacher and staff appreciation events, and purchasing equipment for

the school. It cant be successful without the help of parents!

IHS Speech and Debate needs your help!Saturday October 26

The Irmo High School Speech and Debate Team is hosting a speech and debate tournamentto be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 and we are requesting your support.

Approximately 150 students travel from all over the state of South Carolina to compete in ourtournament. Because our tournament is so large, we are in need of volunteers to judge theevents. No prior experience is necessary and all volunteer judges will be provided with infor-mation on how to judge.

Any assistance throughout your members can provide will be greatly appreciated. The tenta-tive schedule for the tournament is as follows:

9:00 1:00: Rounds 1 and 21:00 5:00: Rounds 3 and 4(Complimentary refreshments and lunch is provided for judges)

Eighth Graders begin to EXPLORE their future Career opportunities

More than ever before, it is important that all students have the skills needed to be successful in college and theworkplace. Becoming college-ready does not happen overnight; students develop these skills by taking rigorouscourses in middle and high school. On Tuesday, September 24th our 8th graders will take the EXPLORE Assess-ment.

EXPLORE helps 8th graders build high school course plans that will prepare them for college and work. It intro-duces them to relevant career options.

EXPLORE identifies;

Areas where they need extra help or additional courses.

Suggestions for improving their skills.

Careers that match their interests.

EXPLORE scores provide early indicators of whether students are on trackfor college. With plenty of time before graduation, students and teacherscan use this information to focus on areas of need. To learn more about

EXPLORE, PLAN or ACT resources at www.actstudent.org.

EXPLORE includes:

Tests in English, math, reading, and science just like thePlan (10th grade) and ACT (11thgrade).

A career section that shows you which careers match your interest.

Questions about your plans for high school and beyond.

A guide stating what your scores mean and how you can use them.

Tips for Doing your Best on Explore:

Get plenty of sleep the night before the test.

Follow directions exactly, and dont be afraid to ask questions.

EXPLORE is a timed test, so pace yourself! Dont spend too much time on any one question.

Not sure of the answer? First rule out every wrong answer you can. Then, pick the best answer from thoseleft.

If you finish early, go back and review your work.

Field Trips

Need Chaperones

Dear 8th Grade Parent/Guardian,

Your student came home with the following letter last week about the

upcoming field trips.

We need volunteers to help chaperone each trip.Irmo Middle School is excited to have the opportunity to take our 8 th grade students to tour District 5Career and Technical Studies Center. We are thrilled to have such an incredible learning experience inour District. This tour may help your student to make informed decisions with upcoming IGP confer-

ences.

Dates are assigned based on last name:

Tuesday, Oct. 22 for students whose last names begin with the letter A G

Tuesday, Oct. 29 for students whose last names begin with the letter H N

Tuesday, Nov. 5 for students whose last names begin with the letter O Z

The buses will leave IMS at 8:30 AM and return by 11:30 AM.

This field trip is free to our students. Please complete the attached field trip permission form with yourchilds name and fill in the date he/she will be attending the trip according to the above assigned dates.

Please ask your child to return to his/her 4 th Block/Enrichment teacher by Friday, October 4th.

When: Sunday, Oct. 13th 1:00 5:00 pm

Fee: $50 Entry Fee Required

Chili:

Participants should supply at least 2 gal of chili

Creativity with your recipes is encouraged all bases (beans, meat, veggie, etc.) are valid

Participants must submit an ingredients list. No lists or recipes will be given out unless you

would like to share. This cook-off involves sampling by event attendees for a donation toJDRF, please be aware that liability is based on ingredients cooked in your chili. Anyone pre-paring and serving harmful ingredients will be held liable. Any non-traditional or unusual ingre-dients must be disclosed to prevent allergic reactions (seafood, peanuts, chocolate, etc.)

Chili should be prepared and heated before 1 pm on October 13

Chili must be prepared and served in a sanitary manner.

General Info:

Participants must furnish their own cookware and serving utensils

A heat source can include a number of different methods including traditional propane campstove, Coleman fuel, or BBQ (limited electricity and no running water will be available in thebooths)

Sides and Supplements: (Cornbread, bread, salsa, cheese, etc.) are optional but encouragedto support your chili

Set-up Rules and Times:

All Participants will be allowed to set up no earlier than 10:30 am

Advertisement and decoration is encouraged

At the close of the event, all equipment, advertisements, and decorations must be removedfrom the site, but should remain until 5:00 pm

Shelter and picnic tables will be supplied

Votes will be cast by the event attendees (announced at 5 pm)

Prizes will be awarded to First and Second places (to be determined)
