In the Brush creek precinct i George Ricket and Ad OwensI jf were nominated Owens receiv p red 8 vote and Rickets so Mitch L ell and Owens were elected as the new members of the County Committee Irhe next order of business wasI h the selection of five Republicans tV whose names should be sent to m the State Election Board from f which to select one as a member of the County Board of Election Jf Commissioners Mr John W Slusher present ed a list of five composed of JI D Tuggle R M Stansberry Sc Vf r ed five as follows AJ Croley i i a J W Parker D W Clark T i D Tinsley and John Mills A substitute was offered by Steve Gilliam to select five i x names from the two lists this was voted down then the list a s < presented by Slusher was vote d I upon and defeated a vote i 12 to 4 Thou the list as present t ed by W B Dir nay was voted upon and elected by a vote of 11I to 2 This was quite a surprise to partyv contiol of the party aflairs but a r theyt cont a r t The Committee long trestle and if the spirit of Benj Franklin the idol of all printers will forgive us we will never walk itagain Ev- ery minute seemed an age and expecting every second to see a train hove in sight our 2 Pana mal hat raised away up on our prepared the waters of Richland some 80 feet below but we landedsafely at Moss Rock and were warm ly greeted by Capt Geo Taylor the affable foreman of the Moss Rock mines who regaled us wth u drink uf cold water and a good cigar we started on our trip into the mine Lighting his miners lamp the Captain saysuCome on boys and in we went Af torgoing in about one hundred feet we stopped to examine the work of those who had been be fore us The mine is laidoft into rooms and are numbered one man to a room The mine has splendid ventilation and the comlort and safety of his men is Capt Taylors special pride and delight A minature railroad ex- tends the entire distance through the mine from the mouth to the tail we reckon on the other side of the mountain a distance- of nearly a thousand feet Pony cars hauled by Tobe as smart- s mule as ever Mnd dared to be is loaded and hauled out to the tipple where it is loadedand shipped to the four ways of the earth as Moss Rock coal ranks with the best coal known to the market and being free from sul- phur it finds a ready sale and is contiually being called for twentysix Gem coal that was ever placed- on the market Oapt Taylor is a miner of long experience compatively a young nan he has 29 years experience in the mining business We spent an Jiour or two in mine jf other sights that we will long re- member To those who have never been in a coal mine weI would say go in once but wear a blackshirt and leave your Pun ama huts on the outside Now as to Tobe he is without doubt the smartest as as well as the held under Southern skies will be featured more than at any previous State Fair The new halfinile track now In process of con- struction when completed will be one of tbe fastest halfmile courses In the country and there Is every indication for a firstclass harness race meeting this fall Four stake five purse and three gentlemens road races have been announced In addition to these there will be two running races each day so the Kentuckian who thinks that his days visit at a fair is Incom pleto without seeing n firstclass horse race will not be disappointed at this years State Fair Among the early closing events are the Kentucky Brew- ers Association stake for 220 trot ters the Louisville Retail Merchants Association stake for 230 trotters and tho Louisville Commercial Club stake for 218 pacers Stake entries closed July 14th purse entries close Sept 7th and entries for the cup races 12 oclock the day before the race The stake races will be contested on the three In five heat plan with a fiveheat limit and the purse races on the two In three heat plan It is the ultimate intention of the State Fair management to build a full mile track encircling the present halfmile course which If the hopes of those In charge the racing program are realized will compare favorably with the best State Fair mile tracks in the country and Louisville will doubtless become one of the most popular
