The negro reaurned to the convictdamp where he was arrested lateSaturday night He told the officers-not to take him back to the scene ofhiy crime as he committed it and itvas not necessary to have him identi-fied

The officers hurried him to BayMinette county seat of Baldwin coun ¬ty As they approached the front gateof the jail seventyfive men arosefrom behind a fence and took charge-of the negro dragging him and a dep ¬uty seventyfive yards before it wasdiscovered that the men were hand ¬cuffed together The deputy was thenreleased and the negro carried away

Clayton was given a fifteenyearsentence in the Mobile courts lastsummer on a charge of manslaughter-it being charged that he robbed andTuurcfered John McKenzie an oldwhite man in this city on Christmaseve 1906 He was a model prisoner-at the stockade and was made atrusty
