manslaughter late Sat- urday afternoon criminally assaulte1- Mrs Joseph White aged 20 years and was lynched by a mob of seventyfive- men outside of the limits of Bay Ann- ette ¬ I Sunday night The assault occurred at the wom ¬ ans home six miles below Loxley Clayton entered the house choked Mrs White and accomplished leis purpose The negro reaurned to the convict damp where he was arrested late Saturday night He told the officers- not to take him back to the scene of hiy crime as he committed it and it vas not necessary to have him identi- fied ¬ The officers hurried him to Bay Minette county seat of Baldwin coun ¬ ty As they approached the front gate of the jail seventyfive men arose from behind a fence and took charge- of the negro dragging him and a dep ¬ uty seventyfive yards before it was discovered that the men were hand ¬ cuffed together The deputy was then released and the negro carried away The negros body has not yet been found Clayton was given a fifteenyear sentence in the Mobile courts last summer on a charge of manslaughter- it being charged that he robbed and Tuurcfered John McKenzie an old white man in this city on Christmas eve 1906 He was a model prisoner- at the stockade and was made a trusty BRUTAL DEED OF BURR- A I Mississippi Negro Was Immediate- ly ¬ Expiated by His Death Wesson Miss April 7John Burr- a young negro was lynched near here Sunday for the murder of a while boySunday T night about dark according to Burrs confession and the story f of an eyewitness he was fishing in a mill pond when Earl Smith the 12 yearold son of J W Smith a pros ¬ perous farmer appeared and began a conversation Burr waff an employe of Smiths father and he said to the boy Look up look at the bird As young Smith ga ed skyward the negro shot him in the back of the head with a shotgun Burr admitted- the shooting but said it was an acci ¬ dent He threw the boys body into the mill pond and started to escape During the night he was captured- by officers of the sheriff and was on his way to jail when just as the Sab ¬ bath morning dawned a party of about thirty men appeared and took the prisoner away t from the officers The canture was made on a county road and the negro was quickly hanged from a tree Several shots were fired to hasten his death The body was then taken down and turned over to the proper authorities for bur- ial ¬ Good company ought to prohibit conductors from helping ladies on and off cars her reason being that a con ¬ ductor with a dirty hand had soiled her nice new white shirt waist A dozen or more communications have followed that of the lady with the spoiled shirt waist some approving- her position always on the ground that they had had shirt waists spoiled in the same manner while others commended the politeness and gallan ¬ try of the conductors- So far the ladies who want to be helped off the car are in the lead and have handed some hot talk back to the lady who had to send her shirt- waist to
