Greetings Comet Community

First and foremost I would like to thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome I have received since I took the reins as Junior Senior High School Principal I have been overwhelmed with the positivity and well-wishes from all corners of the Fallsburg Educational Community

It is a busy and exciting time at the Fallsburg JSHS On Wednesday February 17th Mrs Bruestle and I had the pleasure of hosting three virtual Honor Roll Celebrations We were able to recognize and celebrate the achievements of many of our schol-ars Videos of these ceremonies will be posted on the website for anyone who was not able to attend but would still like to see the program Special thanks to all parents and other family members who took time out of their days to join us

We are more than halfway through the school year We are now requiring students to turn their cameras on during virtual instruction in order to boost academic achievement improve morale and decrease feelings of isolation Additionally starting in March we will be offering after school tutoring programs for students in need of additional academic support I would like to thank our Athletic Director Ms Lendzian for helping facilitate this important program

We know and recognize the numerous challenges many of you are facing right now due to issues from COVID-19 and its impact on society At the same time we are still dedicated to promoting academic excellence for all students and we are here to provide support in any way needed If a student is in need of assistance from an academic emotional or social standpoint please contact a member of our school faculty We are here for you always

A number of initiatives are being planned in order to increase student morale and promote feelings of connectedness within our student body Please be on the lookout for upcoming activities and initiatives by watching our school website and the JSHS Facebook page

Thank you for all your support for our school and our learners

Yours truly

Mr Kyle Roddey JrSr High School Principal

Warrior Kids Return to FCSDWith the arrival of the pandemic and remote learning in

March 2020 Fallsburg Central School District (FCSD) has altered or temporarily lost many programs both in-classroom and after school One of the most special programs was Warrior Kids Brought to FCSD and a few other Sullivan County schools by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan and Orange

Counties (CCE) and Garnet Health Medical Center-Catskills (GHMC-C) hundreds of children

enrolled in this after-school pro-gram Because the program fo-cused on healthy eating and rigor-ous exercise the sponsors wanted to revive it at a time of great need for the

school children They also added a mental health component to promote well-being during the challenges of the pandemic

CCE and GHMC-C welcomed the Warrior kids Program back to FCSD in January as a pilot hybrid program Ms Moira Mencher Manager of Physician Relations amp Community

Health at Garnet Health did a wonderful job in managing and coordinating the entire program Two hundred and six 5th and 6th graders participated for four weeks three days a week with two classes every Wednesday Thursday and Friday from 2 PM to 330 PM

Benjamin Cosor Elementary School (BCES) physical educa-tion teacher Vanessa Marsilio led a group in each period on campus in a classroom CCErsquos Nutritionist Bee Moser and War-riorsrsquo trainer Damola Akinyemi performed the healthy foods and exercise elements from their homes via Google Meet for all the students in Ms Marsiliorsquos classroom and in their homes

Everyone was delighted at the response of children parents and FCSD Administration FCSD Athletics Director and Chair of the Wellness Committee Suzanne Lendzian was very happy

Al Rasnick Do the Right Thing Award Resumes at FCSD

Fallsburg Central School District (FCSD) and the Rasnick Family are happy to announce that they will be giving out Al Rasnick Do the Right Thing Awards (DTRT) this semester after a hiatus of a few years Superintendent Dr Ivan Katz and Bart Rasnick are very happy to offer these awards during a time of great challenges in the community New Principal Kyle Rod-dey at the JrSr High School will become the coordinator for this outstanding program

Mr Roddey will be sending out a flyer announcing the resumption of DTRT and welcoming nominations from the teachers and the staff As Dr Katz said to Bart Rasnick recent-ly ldquoAs superintendent I am proud and honored about what this program meant for our kids in the past and what it could mean for them in the futurerdquo

Dear parents students and community members

On Monday January 25th we began our third marking period as well as our second semester On this date there were some changes at BCES

The students schedule for their Specials classes (Art Comput-er Library Music Physical Education) may have changed In addition to having a ldquonewrdquo Special (Art Computer or Library) the days that they have the same classes for example physical education may not be the same

However one of the biggest changes is the different faces that the students may see in class This is because as we promised back in the summer those parents who wished

to change their child(ren)rsaquos learn-ing environment were able to do so Therefore there are students who have moved from the remote-only model into the hybrid and others have gone from hybrid to remote-only

We welcome our new faces and send a fond fare-well to those who

will now be working from home on a full-time basis We do know however that whatever model the parents choose for their children the teachers here at Benjamin Cosor Elemen-

tary School will work hard to make their educational experi-ence rigorous fun and rewarding

Be safe Be well Be strong

Mary Kate Stinehour BCES Principal mstinehourfallsburgcsdnet

From the Elementary Assistant PrincipalOf late there has been discussion both in ldquoeducation

circlesrdquo and in the news about the effectiveness of the ldquoon-lineremotehybridrdquo education models One of the more common concerns that I have heard is that the students are not always engaged in on-line learning In other words they are not consistently paying attention to the lesson which of course may result in less learning

As the Benjamin Cosor Elementary School Assistant Principal one of my duties is to observe teachers In my experience this year the teachers whose classrooms I have visited have done a commendable job working to keep the students engaged They have worked hard to include all the students in the class discussions They have reinforced their on-line classroom behavior rules Finally they have provided a variety of assignments which touch upon many different learning styles

We all realize that this is a challenging time for our young people However the teachers at BCES are working very hard to make the best of a difficult situation

55From the Elementary Principal

55From the Elementary Principal
