talk about credibility

when it comes to personal trainers, credibility is everything - and no-one has more than Craig Jensen. he served in the 1st Battalion the royal Irish regiment, as part of Combined Forces in a nato base in Kabul from 2004 to 2007.

he was responsible for clearing improvised explosive devices (IeDs) in afghanistan, during routine security patrols. Craig has since jumped out of that 'combat' career for an electrical engineer's job in Dubai; though the 'combat' character can't jump out of him.

today, as part of his off-work 'leisure' time, this al Barsha resident offers voluntary fitness training sessions to people living in and around the Barsha area. his programmes include total body fitness and self-defence sessions - without actually pressing dumbbells in the gym (which Craig believes is an artificial environment).

speaking to hypersun magazine, Craig said that he

green and clean

Forget all the talk about energy saving and reducing the carbon footprint. here, we're talking about real life. the physical green landscape where you can take a walk, relax and experience fresh air, relishing the surrounding vegetation. and that's where al Barsha seems to be heading, courtesy of the on-going Dubai municipality's (Dm) plantation week.

this week, Dm inaugurated the 16.600 sqm al Barsha park 1 right next to al Qiyam school. the park comes with rest areas, kids play courts, shaded and open areas as well as facilities for people with special needs. this 'new generation' of parks aim at providing a completely integrated leisure concept, with facilities for sports fans, families - or those just looking to chill.

By the time we went to press, two more parks were due to be opened - in al Barsha 3 and al Barsha 2 on march 9th and 10th, respectively.

Ibn hamido is knocking on the doors of al Barsha - bringing a new speciality restaurant.

well, it's not just a restaurant - more a top-quality a seafood experience. hypersun magazine talked to tarek muhamed, the restaurant owner. he said that Ibn hamido seafood restaurant will hit the ground with a full spectrum of delicious offerings - including mediterranean and middle east seafood cuisines manned with super-fresh ingredients.

when? "Before the end of march." seafood lovers will enjoy special discounts on the restaurant's sweet clams, tender scallops and fantastic shrimp.

while there is no shortage of restaurants in al Barsha, Ibn hamido promises a unique seafood culinary experience. there will be more than enough choice for even the most finicky seafood lovers. along with a relaxing ambience that's more like a hotel than a restaurant.

welcome to this week’s edition of hypersun al Barsha. I think you’ll particularly enjoy our ‘shout out loud’ section this week, because we chose a selection of neighbourhood ‘characters’ – familiar faces whom you may have seen around – and asked them about their jobs, lifestyles and how they feel about the community. I especially like the way that almost none of them have ended up doing the jobs they were originally trained to do – but seem to have found new and interesting ways forward nonetheless. meanwhile, you'll find lots more local news and events listed here in this issue of hypersun. If there’s an issue that you want to discuss, please contact me on [email protected] and I’ll make sure to answer you personally.

a fork in the road

Golden Fork Group of Companies (GFC) is in the final stages of opening an outlet in al Barsha, according to a company source.

Is it al Barsha's demographics and market potential that's pulling the top fast food restaurants to the area? or had GFC planned to come to al Barsha for a long time?

"over the years, our passion for seafood and delicious experiences has kept us evolving. we've developed the atmosphere to keep up with the times and to provide our guests with convenient, accessible and comfortable places to dine, enjoy and celebrate," commented the GFC source.

GFC has evolved from a modest beginning at nasser square in 1986 - and now, the al Barsha restaurant will be the 19th of its kind in the uae. the brand has built great popularity and loyalty.

It's a completely integrated community, and promises to be one of the most ambitious of its kind within al Barsha. apI obviously sees the benefits of working in this area: the company is also involved in the construction of a stand-alone hotel, barely half a kilometer from the new complex.

It's a recognised truism that most medical treatments simply don't provide a holistic, 'mind, body, spirit' solution. this is where reiki comes in - a holistic medical approach that channels 'universal energy' to the patient. and where to benefit from reiki therapy? Four years in the making, one of al Barsha's premier projects is soon to be revealed - and it's set to make quite an impact on the landscape, not to mention the opportunities and amenities that our neighbourhood has to offer. ShOUT OUT lOUd Al bArShA!every week, we’ll be asking four al Barsha people - perhaps you see them around the community - for their views on the neighbourhood, their lifestyles , or key current issues. see what you think of their replies.

taher patrawaLa sales executive with a real estate company

how long have you been staying here?one year in al Barsha and three years in uae. the time has gone so quickly.

did you plan to be working here?this was my primary target. at first, I failed to secure it because I didn't have enough GCC experience at that time. But thank God I finally got it after a few years in Dubai. this is the business I feel most comfortable with, and plan to progress here in this sector.

what do you like about your job?I love it when a client calls me, in need of a solution for accommodation. they then tell me their budget; and I offer them something that is way beyond their expectations.

any interesting stories about your customers?rates have dropped, so when you show someone a two bedroom apartment, and quote them the price - which is always in

Dirhams - they can't believe their ears. they always ask: "please tell me the amount in Dirhams, not dollars." I can't help but be amused by this.

do you like working here?yes I do. so many people are moving to al Barsha and it's becoming a very busy area. I see many good changes here and it's very much a key area to live and work in the future. I think this can be an excellent area to live and work - one of the best in Dubai, perhaps. I would definitely see my career development in terms of this area, which is generally a very strong territory in my industry.

do you feel part of the community?yes I do. I come across many of my clients all the time. sometimes we discuss how they're feeling in their new homes, others invite me for coffee, lunch, dinner…. I become good friends with many of them, building relationships that may last many years. this sense of belonging is one of the best parts of my job. the community is also growing here all the time and there are all kinds of interesting people to meet.

does your job support other family members?not really. at the moment, it's just a question of providing for myself. But I am planning to get married very soon, so I am saving for that. the advantage with the work I do is that it can provide a very satisfactory income, but of course it's better if the economy is strong. nonetheless, my job is good at the moment.

Lucy nJambisales executive with starbucks Coffee at mall of the emirates

how long have you been working in dubai? It will be two years in april of this year.

did you plan to be working here?I had never imagined myself doing indoor sales. I studied hotel management, applied for a hostess job with emirates airlines when I had just got here (I wasn't successful).

what do you like about your job?I like it when a customer asks me to 'keep the balance', which I

experience all the time. the only drawback with my work is long, long hours - up to 12 hours a day, amnd more sometimes.

any interesting stories about your customers? It surprises me when almost seven out of every ten customers that I serve ask me where I'm from. some are quite surprised when I tell them I'm from Kenya.

do you like working here? Before I didn't, but now I'm getting used to the job and it's becoming part of me. I feel better and better about it.

do you feel part of the community?no, not fully part of it - although I like what I see and I would like to get closer to the community here. I don't stay here though, and largely come to al Barsha (moe) to sell coffee.

does your job support other family members?of course. that's why I'm here in the first place.I look after my entire family back home in Kenya. But I'm getting used to it now.

“so many people are moving to al Barsha and it's becoming a very busy area. I see many good changes here."

amani hassanmedia sales executive, autotrader magazine

how long have you been working in dubai?I've been working for four years now, but I've actually been in Dubai for 22 years. It's totally home for me now.

did you plan to be working here?no, but I took the job as a challenge and things have worked out really well. alongside the job, I'm actually studying for a Business administration Diploma at Computer College in Garhoud. I want to develop my career and this will give me the knowledge to be an effective manager.

what do you like about your job?I especially like dealing with my clients and the atmosphere here is very good. the team around me is excellent, there's a good feeling of teamwork - we all work together really well - and everyone has a nice sense of humour.

do you feel part of the community?oh yes, absolutely. the area is nice and quiet - I really like that a lot. there are excellent facilitiesaround here and the area itself is very central. there's lots of development going on around here these days, but most of what I see is a change for the better. I expect that al Barsha will become more and more a business hub as companies realise its value as a place to be - more companies are moving in.

does your job support other family members?oh yes, it supports my mother and father who live with me here in al Barsha. It's a vital source of income, ensuring that we can all enjoy a good lifestyle together.

ronaLd nyaLiBell Boy

how long have you been working in dubai?I have been here for almost two years now.

did you plan to be working here?well, this was never my intention to be a bell boy, but eventually I feel I love it.

what do you like about your job?well, something I do like about my job is that I'm always offered tips from clients. and most of the times I get to meet big personalities who come to hotels. one time I actually shook hands

with the movie star Danny DeVito. Can you imagine?

any interesting stories about your customers?here, we receive guests from all walks of life. From high profile personalities to average people. But whenever they are leaving the hotel after their stay, they always say: "It's been so nice staying here with you guys.."

do you like working here?absolutely yes. the salary is not all that much, but that is covered up by the fun and joy of meeting people I would otherwise never meet in all my life.

do you feel part of the community?yes I do. Because I always meet guests coming from abroad and al Barsha residents as well.

does your job support other family members? If it were not for the tips (laughs), then I don't know how I would support my family back home. the tips really help me a lot.But thank God I can pay for my brother's tuition now.

an extremely fierce level of competition. after some tough matches, DIa's teams won the overall competition. yesss! this is an extremely impressive performance and the school's cabinet will indeed display the trophy with immense pride.

the year 5 boys played the wellington International school tournament on 10th of march, and the year 6 boys will play in the same tournament on the 17th at the same venue. the year 5s are likely to be favourites for this competition after being runners up in the sony Football league to Dubai British school who will be absent from this tournament. overall, excellent results.

the roof of the worldas part of its outreach programme with a nepalese local school, wellington International school’s IB Diploma cohort were treated for a life-changing expedition to the highest country on earth – nepal, from 11th-17th February 2011.

the students worked through a variety of team-building activities designed to test their physical and intellectual skills while honing their leadership qualities. so, they navigated through spider webs, had some time on race circuits, were verbally quizzed through complex building instructions - before making their way (blindfolded) through a natural obstacle course. easy, huh?

challenges which saw students out of their comfort zones and forced them to learn some tough lessons.

"It was heartening to see our students face each challenge with undaunted resilience and enormous reserves of perseverance. most impressive though was their ability to make light of their difficulties, find ways to laugh through some of the more extreme challenges and generally support one another throughout our stay," Kosta lekanides, the trip leader told hypersun.
