heart of darkness in al Barsha 1is there anyone – motorist and pedestrian alike – who hasn’t noticed how pitch-black it is at night in large sections of al barsha? why oh why is there such a shortage of streetlights? especially inky is the area around mafraq road and its side streets. these are areas where many residents and shoppers would dearly love to roam at night, but are discouraged by the almost total blackness. this is especially dangerous for ladies finishing their late-shifts and walking to the metro, or wanting to visit the nearest 24/7. the shame is that this is such an up-and-coming part of our neighbourhood (where else can you get that stylish trim at 11pm, or wooden window blinds perfectly cut to order?) and it seems bizarre that threatening darkness has to be a necessary part of the visit. Perhaps it took a Zimbabwe expat to show how it’s

possible to create a quality outdoors lifestyle – and to provide the amenities that make even the summer months a pleasure. James first came to dubai as a publisher working on a key lifestyle and

leisure publication – and he didn’t forget the lessons he learned about residents’ attitudes to their leisure time and the kind of amenities they needed in their homes and gardens. it’s no surprise that a few years later, he’s managing director of associated

response, a company brilliantly spearheading the availability of eco-friendly outdoors solutions – including solar-powered lighting, super-safe and user-friendly heaters, elegant recyclable furniture and a world-leading irrigation product, fertigation.

DIVERSITy our products”, says James, “cut across all the demographic boundaries, since they can be used in many different communities and by companies as well as families and individuals. but here, we find there is an increasing interest in eco-friendly solutions; people want to introduce landscaping in a way that doesn’t have an impact on the environment, or simply open up the use of their garden. of course, in dubai we have guaranteed sun for 8 hours a day 350 days a year and i wanted to introduce new approaches that allowed residents to make the most of this outdoors time. i decided to diversify, offering products that encompassed more than one lifestyle package.”

ADDIng VALuE “innovation is key. for example, people may have had bad experiences with outdoor heating, lighting or furniture products that simply haven’t been made to withstand the intense heat here in the gcc. we offer a better product: two examples would be our top-quality carbon fibre outdoor electric heaters, and a superb range of furniture, called Kayfactor, which is a totally new concept for making outdoor furniture. it’s designed using autocad, moulded in three dimensions and then intricate designs are hand-cut into each and every piece, according to your own design brief. this is ideal for local families looking for a more traditional arabic feel, because every item can carry arabic motifs. or perhaps you

want a very modern, individual look – we can create something that meets your needs perfectly. what’s more, this is also a ‘green’ product, because the material is fully recyclable.”

“here, families living in up-scale villas, or companies who host events, are looking for an integrated solution, and we can supply lighting units, for example, that let you extend an event into the night time and make the most of your facilities. whether you want to light a patio or a carpark, we have the right kind of solar-powered lighting – every type of system from 9 watts to 45 watts!”

“in al barsha, we’ve worked not only with residents but with a number of the hotels – even supplying all the event artwork. the reality is that we’re totally integrated into the diverse needs of the community. this applies especially to our new ‘fertigation’ product, which revolutionizes the way people can hydrate and fertilise their gardens or development. in a traditional system, workmen fertilise the grounds using huge amounts of loose fertiliser, which only leaches straight through the soil,

damaging the ecosystem. about 95% of the fertilizer is lost and wasted. but with fertigation, an accurate and measured dose of fertiliser is released with every irrigation. this is very attractive for people and businesses here in

the local community – it’s not just about helping the environment, but about saving money too, making sure you don’t squander resources. and the system is very robust, with no moving parts and a long guarantee. this is a great

example of providing integrated solutions – and it’s one which is proving very popular with the local municipality too. i firmly believe that when it comes to opportunities of this kind in the region, the sky’s the limit. this level of opportunity simply doesn’t exist anywhere else.” “i also feel with this market that it’s vital to take time to understand how it works, and what’s really needed. i have found that when people realize that you have a proper understanding. they are very ready to listen to what you have to say."

you can contact James waters, md of associated response, on 050 1877 030.

a perfectly stable envi-ronment for childrensince 1989, tiny home has been providing a highly stimulating nursery environment where children learn and play in ways perfectly suiting their individual needs and pace of development. as a montessori nursery, tiny home puts great emphasis on tactile learning materials, close personal observation and excellent interaction between nursery and parent. there’s no better example of the great stability of this nurturing setting than the fact that two members of staff recently notched up 20

years’ service with tiny home.mrs das has been a teacher for 20 years, building a reputation as a caring, wonderful montessori teacher – and many families have had not one, but two children taught by her. meanwhile, ms rosie, a helper at tiny home, celebrates 21 years, and her support and friendship to all is greatly admired by staff and parents alike. congratulations from tiny home – here’s to the next two decades!

by the way, this milestone will be an important one not only for the two legends but also one for the montessori – as an institution for loving care and education. tiny home is a core example of these caring montessori values, which of course place a key emphasis on sensory development and bespoke tuition programmes for each and every child.

the musical week was a smashing success that kept the excited students on their feet, cheering and wanting more, enjoying the occasion.

the X-Factor at dubai British schooltalent runs deep at dubai british school – a line-up worthy of simon cowell himself! a group of year 13 students took on the role of event management team and organized a fantastic school

talent show – the dbs factor. the whole concept was created to support the dubai autism centre (and it successfully raised more than aed22,000!). taking place at one of the best venues in dubai, the dubai community theatre and arts centre (ductac), the event – which took place on 8th february - was part of the applied business and leisure ‘a’ level course. the students were truly in the driving seat, handling everything from auditioning to ticketing. amazing, varied acts performed on the night (acts also included entrants from the teaching staff!), but there could only be one winner – year 9 student holly humphreys.

ExpERIEnTIAL LEARnIng

week without walls at gcsgreenfield community school has pioneered out-of-classroom learning experiences – and the recent week without walls event (www) was a highly-developed mix of team building, leadership skills and educational activities. it’s a week when children forge friendships, travel to locations

outside the school and discover the value of teamwork – and it’s no exaggeration to say that the learning that takes place over the course of the week will shape the way the students become life-long learners. not to mention giving them memories that can last a lifetime.www has grown organically from key elements of the existing curriculum – it’s not an ‘add-on; but a brilliant opportunity to intensify key areas of learning. the off-campus activities help students grow and develop as well as accelerate enquiry and enthusiasm. experiential learning at its best! – a valuable experience for all.

TRADITIOnAL nAnny?

Situated near the ibis hotel, lounge w is a cool hang

out addition to the al barsha neighbourhood. lounge w is essentially a place where you can kickback, relax and hang out with your friends. there isn’t much of a view to enjoy other than the cars driving past on sZr. but why would you want to look any further when the lounge itself provides customers with live in-house music or perhaps even a live ball game on one of the many flat screen tvs. the staff are welcoming, friendly and wear warm smiles, happy to cater to one’s requests.

the décor is a piece of art inspired by an underwater theme. the lounge is a whitewashed

palette tinted with bold colours from under the sea. our visit was during the day but i’d recommend visiting the restaurant when night falls. during the day you will be treated to classic white devoid of the enhanced bold colours.

in the evening the lounge transforms into a whimsical setting of luminous purple 'n blue thus enriching the stunning bright oranges and greens.

the menu is a well-articulated fusion of the arabic and international cuisine. the variety of food available is minimal but nevertheless a good selection of salads, soups, pastas, sandwiches and deserts to choose from.

we ordered the chicken tikka

sandwich and a customized order of a veggie salad with a lemon dressing on the side. the best part of the salad was the fact that the lemon juice was freshly squeezed and not the bottled kind that one

would find at the supermarket. the salad tasted great but did not appear like a burst of nourishment, as one would expect.

the chicken tikka sandwich was complemented by a side portion of salad and crisps. covered by a layer of lettuce, tomato and mayo, the chicken filling was mildly spiced and cooked to perfection. the chicken was a delight but the loaf that held it together was gritty and lacked character. nevertheless, the star of the dish was delectable enough to cover up for the characterless loaf.

coupled with a round of cooling beverages, the bill was settled at an amount of aed 57. the lounge offers an excellent combo of sheesha with your meal amongst several ongoing promotions that can be found on their facebook page. the place opens at 12pm and stays open until late.

make no mistake, this is a cool place to hang out and meet people – it’s one of select cluster of ‘watering spots’ where the food is pretty much incidental to the ambience and the sense of relaxed, chic wellbeing. shall we see you there for lunch, shisha or dinner? tel: 04 3990882www.loungew.ae
