That time of year is upon us, when the lake is warm, the sun is high and sticks around long into the evening. It’s the time in the year when we all get to leave our wetsuits in the bag, the jumpers at home and the windows open. We get to experience the water being warm and occasionally, the sun on our backs with some good times along the way. The best thing about the summer is riding with your mates at the lake or going on a road trip to another spot or park. It’s felt like a never ending journey leading into this latest issue of Hybrid Wake, with the summer in full swing, there have been a constant flow of events and shoots which have led to some great experiences, seeing the UK’s riding at its best.

From London Docklands mixing it up with Scotty Broome hitting some transfer lines to Liquid Leisure and their Plastic Playground Qualifier which showcased 50 riders battling it for a handful of spots in the main event. Coupled with the King of Vert Qualifier, all spots have been decided for the main event which will see some of the biggest riders in the world compete for the biggest cash pot in UK history. Both Cable and Boat Nationals have been and gone. Along with the JB High Jump competition which left for a few sore knees, proving that there’splenty of UK talent shining through to take the podiums and make way for the new era of riders progressing through the ranks.

As the summer pushes on we have travelled to North Wales not once, but twice, for Wakestock, Glass Butter Beach and the Harbour Project. With the weather being kind at all the events, we

was spared from the usual mixed weather of Abersoch and left with two very different events that made their mark on the local Welsh community.

Wakestock has seen some changes in recent years, with the focus of riding migrating from the site to nearby Glasfryn in the form of the Rail Europeans and of course the infamous boat competition in the marina. This year saw the return of the signature enormous rail. The Harbour Project hasn’t been seen in Abersoch for a few years but made a welcome return at this year’s Glass Butter Beach, with some insane obstacles, the riders were left with a challenging and spectacular night jam course. After a three day build, it was insightful seeing obstacles the riders had chosen to create along with the added factor of riding at night, it was certainly one of the most unique setups of the calendar - so far.

With so much already behind us, it feels like the summer is running away, but fear not, there is still a lot of life left in this British summer and plenty more events to keep the wake enthusiasts happy. Harbour Reach and Plastic Playground are just around the corner and will promise to deliver some of the best action the UK will see this year. Both, well worth the trip from wherever you are in the country. With countless opportunities to meet and catch some of the amazing riding happening before the season ends, make sure to keep an eye out and support these fantastic wake events.

Enjoy your time in the sun and lets hope it keeps shining a few more months...

Brad SmeeleInjuries in a sport like wakeboarding aren’t hard to come by some come and go and others stick around forever. Just like any other sport an athlete has to push the limits in order to better themselves upping the chances of injuries to occur.

Brad Smeele a rider originally from New Zealand had been riding for 15 years, taking world titles and even innovating the sport by landing the first double tantrum to blind. Pushing himself to the limit, perfecting the new trick he’d only landed a few months prior left Brad fighting for his life. Resulting in a shattered C4 vertebrae, leaving him quadriplegic.

Loved and respected throughout the wakeboarding community, Brad’s closest friends and family have set up the Brad Smeele Foundation in the hopes of raising enough money to help Brad and his recovery.

Owen Pick – Moving OnThis is the story of Owen Pick, an ex front line soldier in the British Army. Serving in Afghanistan Owen was ordered to assist a platoon under fire. After engaging in combat Owen found himself up against what some would say a life altering tragic accident. Here is a short film about Owen, his story and what it takes to overcome one of his biggest challenges yet.

The Breddas - We Love WakeboardingIt’s official, The Breddas love wakeboarding. And if you haven’t noticed, they rip. Beyond your regular tricks, beyond your imagination, these guys are pushing wakeboarding and it’s coming from their passion and no doubt their natural competitiveness between the hoard of brothers.

Plastic Playground - Qualifier ResultsThe results are in from the Plastic Playground qualifier! Cain Hamilton takes down the top spot with Freddie Carter chasing his heels into second place. CK Koester, Jack Battleday, Antoine Allaux and Matt Muncey will make the remaining top six that will progress into the main event next month. Check out the results here!

There’s becoming many ways in which so many people can go and get a tow on a wakeboard or skate now. You have any option to ride in any style usually only a short trip away. Specially in the UK, it’s not uncommon that you can visit your local spot and take a spin on a full cable, a two tower System, or behind a boat or jet ski pretty much in the same day. Not to mention the use of winches, even if you live in a built up area with a bunch of water and no park, you can still get out there. The possibilities are all around you..

Page 32: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

32 hybridwakemag.com

Mixing It Up With Scotty Broome

This wide scope for opportunities to ride has meant that good riders and good riding are now at almost every wake spot and behind every type of tow vehicle there is. So how is it that people stand out and make things ever interesting for themselves, if everybody is able to ride the same things?

Be creative!

Obviously everyone wants to learn that next thing, as that is what progressing your own riding should be all about. But good riding and keeping things fun can be as much about how well you use your surroundings, than what trick you are actually doing.

Events around the world are now geared towards a new realm of wakeboarding where what we thought was “regular” riding has been thrown out to make way for something completely different and ground breaking for a new world of tricks and new obstacle lines. The influence undoubtedly more from Skate and Snowboarding has given rise, in a big way, to events around Europe like RB Rising High, Wake The Line and FISE. But also here in the

UK with Red Bull Harbour Reach, Plastic Playgrounds and the recent GBB Harbour Project.

These full on obstacle assault courses challenge the riders to not only complete the sections of each run, but do it in a way that makes them stand out from the other competitor’s because of the risk in making that next section, making for the most interesting and crowd pleasing riding that events have ever had. Double Flips, Double Mobe’s, 1080’s and 1260’s are all a part of our sport now because of a direction and influence that these events have taken and more importantly the riders that are taking part.

The same creative influence on riding can be seen in the many feature length videos being released in the past year and also the daily release of web edits from riders around the world. Films like ‘The Debut’ or ‘Drop The Gun’ really showcase this creative flare from very different groups and styles of riders from all over the world. Seeing the lines and things that go down in these films you can’t help but think, firstly how awesome it is, but mostly, how well the surroundings have been used in the shots.

Why not take some influence from these guys, buy that new movie and head along to that next pro event that’s happening because it could be just the thing to inspire your riding. If you ride the same park a lot, then keep things fresh every time you hit the water. Try all the obstacles a completely new way. Try a new line of tricks. Learning to do everything you can already do, switch, could just be the best thing for your riding and to keep you loving the sport for a long time to come.

So next time you are heading to the local spot for a shred, think about how you and your mates are going to make the session that little bit more exciting. Get creative and have fun!

The possibilities are all around you..

Hello James, welcome to Hybrid. We find you here at Liquid Leisure. Can you tell us what brought you over here and what you’re up to?Well, I’ve been invited to Plastic Playgrounds, an event that Stu Marston is putting on. It’s really sick to see someone put on an event that has so many good rails and riders coming from all over the world to ride here in the UK. I really like the park here: they have so many different obstacles to choose from: the pool gap and the Henshaw, to so many different kickers. It’s everything you need in one place, it’s a cool place to shred and hang out!

With not long to go before the event, do you have any trips planned?Yeah, I’m going to travel around with Slingshot to a few cables around the country to see what’s happening in the parks in the UK. We’re heading to Sheffield, Liverpool, Abersoch and the New Forest - it’s going to be great trip.

A new board under your feet we see? When did you first get your pro model and how has it changed to your last one?Yeah it is - I’ve been riding the new board for about a week or so, nothing’s really changed on this year’s one. I really like the black tip and tail plus the

graphic turned out really sick, so I’m super stoked on that! We tried to get a bit more flex in the tip and tail but besides that it’s pretty much the same as last years and I love it!

You just got in a couple of days ago, where did you fly in from? I just flew in from the US, I’ve been hanging out with Graeme Burress, travelling around riding and filming. Went to Jibtopia, Terminus and Wake Nation Cincinnati. It was sick to ride everyday with Graeme and hang out. We rode a new cable everyday or just travelled to go ride a cable for a week,

38 hybridwakemag.com

Thisguyloveshisjob

Page 39: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

UNSTOPPABLEJames Windsor

film and hangout with the people there. It was cool to see the different cable parks. The change of vibes - you can go to one cable and its got such a unique vibe then go to another cable, somewhere completely different, say five hours away, it’s just like everyone’s super cool and chilled.

Why the choice of trips and the destinations? We just wanted to go ride and film at parks we’ve not filmed at before so it was pretty much to go and make an edit. Graeme got a new helicopter and he’s loving that. Always flying it, going

everywhere and filming. It was really cool. We put out a helicopter edit from Wake Nation Cincinnati but there’s going to be a few more edits to come.

How long was the trip?I went to the States for two months just travelling around.

What was your favourite spot on the trip?I’d have to say Terminus - it’s rad. The cable is amazing, the whole place is astroturf,. When you walk in and out of the lake, you’ll always be standing on grass. But it looks so amazing just like because it’s all fake grass - it’s really cool

and to have the Raph rail there was cool because I hadn’t hit one of those before.

What type of setup do they have there? They have two full cables and a Sesitec System 2.0

Where were you before that, back home?Nope, I was at FISE in France, Wake of Steel in Austria and then went to America for the Triple Crown.

What’s on your agenda, are you going to stay here until Plastic Playgrounds?Yes, I think next week we’re hitting up the Harbour Project and Glass Butter

39 hybridwakemag.com

TailpressontheHenshaw,-anamehewouldn’thaveknownacoupleofyearsago..

herman

Page 40: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

UNSTOPPABLEJames WindsorBeach. We’re going to check that out and build some rails and ride. I’m pretty excited about that - fun with some of the boys!

From there we’ll all be heading up to Harbour Reach, which you won last year….I was super surprised! I really like the set-up. I really like the boat and the atmosphere. You get great vibes because it’s in the marina with people watching all around you. So I’m looking forward to going back.

What other competitions do you look back on that you have fond memories of?Always FISE, it’s amazing, I love it. I’m always going, I guess it’s just really cool. So many different sports. You’re never bored, you can always walk away if you’re watching some wakeboarding, you can watch BMX or something you’d not usually watch. It’s really cool to see everyone pushing their sports. At night time everyone goes out and you meet all the BMXers, skaters and stuff like that. It’s really cool that all the sports can come together and have one big party, so it’s really rad!

What’s quite unique about yourself is your short time in wakeboarding. Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into wakeboarding?I started motorbike riding at three and all I did was ride motorbikes everyday. As soon as I’d get off of school I’d just ride motorbikes. It’s all I did. I didn’t even know what

wakeboarding was until 2008. I’d never heard of it before, but one day I went with my school in December 2009 on a trip to a cable park. I had a couple of laps on a kneeboard and thought to myself “This thing is sick, I love the kneeboard! I’m going to be a kneeboarder!” I was hooked! So I went back the next weekend and went kneeboarding. Half way through the day a good friend goes past me and says “What the hell are you doing on a kneeboard?! Get a wakeboard” So I tried wakeboarding, got up second time, made it to the first corner and thought “This is amazing!”.

It just went on from there, I loved it from the minute I got on my wakeboard. I thought to myself “This is what I want to do. This is epic!” I just rode everyday. When I started it was the Christmas holidays. Very quickly all I wanted for Christmas was a membership and a wakeboard. I asked my mum and I got it. I was loving it. Hooked ever since then! Did my first comp six months later.

How did the first comp go?Yeah, good. I entered the rail jam and I won the series. I won 3 stops back to back, I got sponsored by Liquid Force six months after trying wakeboarding for the first time. Getting free boards and stuff, I was like “This is super sick!”. I think it’s that what pushed me so much.

UNSTOPPABLEJames Windsor

All the boys I rode with were around my age and stuff. At the cable I was always one of the youngest of the groms, so I got lots of grommy bashing and stuff like that - it was awesome, definitely a good way to grow up I guess. Shredding the cable everyday and hanging out with all my friends.

Living the dream man! After your first successful year, when did you get your first Pro Model?Last year, I’d been riding for 4 years. I was super stoked. I’ve been riding for four and a half years, won three World Titles and this will be my second Pro Model… So I’m pretty pumped! I hope to keep going I guess - it can only get better!

Which competitions stand out as your overall favourite? When I won Worlds Pro Mens. The traditional and features both in the same year, winning both world titles was insane. That was my first year riding Pro, competing against people I’d looked up to the whole time I’d been riding. I started the year on the dock like “Oh my God, that’s Shawn Watson, that’s Nick Davies..’ standing on the dock being blown away, and when the results come and you’ve beat them, you go on to the next round and it’s like “Wait a minute, how’s this happening?”. It’s really cool though to be watching someone and wanting to be like them, then next minute you’re beating them - its a really cool feeling.

So do you live full time in Australia?I spend eight months a year overseas travelling, wakeboarding and stuff but when I’m home, it’s really good, I like it. I only get to spend a few months of the year there but I love it, there’s no place like home. As much as I love travelling and meeting all these new people and stuff, I do love going home. It’s good to sleep in your own bed!

43 hybridwakemag.com

Page 44: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

When you go back home - do you still ride at the same cable?I used to ride Bli Bli but they got new owners, I still ride there but the old owners bought Mackay GoWake, so I ride there a lot now. I spend like two weeks in Mackay and go home for a couple of weeks. So I’m travelling even when I’m at home pretty much.

I get to go ride a left foot cable at the new GoWake cable. It’s really cool to see. We only have two left foot cables and I’m just used to riding right foot forward, so it’s really handy to go somewhere to practice for left foot tricks. Bli Bli is my home cable, its where I started - so I’ll always ride there. It’s super low and super long, it’s like riding a jet ski, it’s perfect. It’s got awesome rails and when you rock up, it feels like

44 hybridwakemag.com

“Anyone’s local cable, always feels like home - cruising around seeing all your buddies that you haven’t seen in a long time, cutting laps at

home. Anyone’s home cable, always feels like home - cruising around seeing all your buddies that you haven’t seen in a long time, cutting laps at home - it’s super cool. I love Australia and will always live there I reckon.

Do you still ride your motorbikes when you’re home?Yeah, my sister’s boyfriend has 300 acres, so I get to ride there all the time. They have two supercross tracks, 5 motocross tracks and a few enduro tracks. I just go out to her house and go ride. They have national events out there - it’s a full track, 40 gates, full set-up, it’s awesome!

Is that a family thing? It’s her boyfriend’s family - they own the farm.. It’s really cool,

you get to go out there and have hangouts in the middle of freaking nowhere. In the town there’s only one pub and one police station. If you blink you’ll miss the town! Seriously, there’s only one street in the whole town - 3 people live behind the pub and 4 dotted around and that’s about it. That’s like 20mins away from my sisters house. So she has to drive into town and town’s not that big at all, so it’s cool to go out there, ride bikes and have fun!

That sounds incredible! Well, there’s not going to be many bikes but plenty of wakeboarding over the next few weeks. We’ll look forward to seeing a bit more of what we saw on the water today while you’re here!

Since its inception Wakestock has changed beyond recognition. All the way from the top down, it has expanded and evolved as the years have passed. From what started out life as a tiny festival in North Wales, it grew year on year, every one bigger than the last. The list of invited riders has always been a hot topic and the chance to compete; a thing of honour and pride. In recent years however there has been a change of direction for the Welsh wake fest, the absence of the infamous Pool Gap has left some riders feeling a little disjointed from the event. What with the lack of a signature rail in the harbour last year, there was a fear it had lost its way. It of course hasn’t, 2014’s event saw the rail reinstated in the Pwllheli marina along with a new towboat for the event in the form of a Super Air Nautique G23.

Outside of the boat event, the main site was still without its wake feature however focus had been moved to Glasfryn and the continuation of the WWA

Rail Europeans coinciding with the competition. With an event that attracts so much attention within the community and outside alike, the title is one of the most coveted on the UK circuit to this day. It’s importance was reinforced by the winners of this years event making it a memorable and defining moment. The lineup of riders looking as strong as ever, there were multiple previous champions in both the Mens and Womens categories, it was going to be no walk in the park for any of the riders.

Qualifying for the finals took place on the Friday before the festival, there was a solid crowd attending and they were given a great display of wakeboarding from the field. A few solid crashes throughout left some heading for the LCQ’s to try and eek a place out in the finals. Luca Kidd displaying some solid riding and staying on his feet despite the pressure, the young gun found his way into the Wakestock final! Not bad for a grommy.

Despite Luca’s best attempts, he was to be no match for the top runners, with David O’Caoimh, Dan Nott, Sam Carne, Jorge Gill to name but a few - it was a tough field. Sam Carne had a couple of unlucky falls in his final run, with a rare full pull on the rail it was all to play for, taking a tumble just before the corner on a roll to blind at the end of his first pass then going down on a toeside 7, there was to be no gold for Sam. Dan Nott was another hot favourite before the final, he is never to be underestimated in competition, his cool attitude and technical riding always makes an impression. Dan was out to win, coming back to the dock with two 7’s, a whirly, huge batwing, tootsie roll, crow mobe and more…but it was not enough.

David O’ had his own ideas about victory that day. His signature slim chance off the dock leads only into more moves, and more 7’s and more everything. Consistency and an enormous bag of tricks that would make even the best look twice, David O’Caoimh is a force to be reckoned with on the boat, a worthy Wakestock champion. Rolling back to the Saturday afternoon and we find

ourselves at the Fox Big Air on the Abersoch main beach, the format remaining the same from previous years with the riders getting two hits to try and land the best trick of the day. A strong crowd were in attendance despite some fairly imposing clouds and the occasional shower, with plenty of spills behind the two tow jet skis. The sea was unforgiving at best, with some wind swell the landings were far from predictable. Despite the tough conditions there were plenty of takers to have a go at the title. Some monumental crashes and splashes ensued as some of the riders regretted their previous night’s escapades. CK Koester was not one of those however, landing a chunky, well controlled heelside backside 540 to take the 2014 title.

The next highlight for the wake enthusiast to talk about is the WWA Rail Europeans, with Industry Wake Parks working alongside Glasfryn Wake Parc to create a course that adds a little spice for the riders. With heavy focus on a jib style layout, The Leviathan and regular kicker were complimented by an incline to barrel tap and a missile that had been mounted on a platform straight off the dock.

Wakeskate, Womens and Mens were on the running list, with Megan Barker fresh off her boat win, heading up the field with Sophie Cordery who took the Womens title after putting together a solid run, not least including a pressed back board with a full pull on the UNIT hand rail. The wakeskaters were out next with the riders getting a decent amount of time on the water to get their best tricks down and put together a decent line for the judges. It was no surprise that Ollie Moore would take the win, with a front board on the hand rail, The Leviathan plus a 3-shuv, ollie north and a few others for good measure, it was clear cut. Props have to go to Matt Crowhurst who landed a back shuv off the kicker for the first time in the session. Not to be forgotten along with Matt, Luca Kidd who made yet another appearance in a Wakestock final, this time in the skate and landing a back board on The Leviathan along the way.

The main focus was however on the Mens heats, with riders being picked out of a hat by Mitch Langfield, they were drawn head-to-head and would battle it out over two rounds. With some more casualties of Wakestock leading to some interesting runs and some surprises as the rounds progressed, the odd weird fall left those making it through to the semi-finals equal favourites. Mitch Langfield, Lee Debuse, Nick Davies Louis Floyd and CK Koester were looking strong throughout their heats. With the heats only consisting of a few short passes of

the course, every hit counted. When it came down to the final two, Lee Debuse stood on the dock next to Louis Floyd with everything to play for. Sadly he didn’t get it together and couldn’t put down a complete run to beat Louis’ well constructed run to victory. While the event is hosted off-site, it remains well attended, even with the late Sunday timing, it was great afternoon in the sun.

A weary trek back to the site through the inevitable festival traffic and once more into the breach before the event closes its doors for another year to the revellers. While Wakestock has changed significantly recently and the “Festival of the Sea” continues on its own path, there is something that is still so heartwarming about it. Although there are other events that might be more official or count on some imaginary points ranking, Wakestock will always be Wakestock.

For one week a year the peninsula sees some amazing wakeboarding and a tremendous amount more. The atmosphere and community at the event is always a big draw, the fact that riders from all over the country travel to mutual ground and become one unit of fun for a few short days. Each cable will have their area but there is no doubt that those around you are there for the same reasons and are having just as much fun as you are. Well…that is if you stay in the rider camping.

Abersoch welcomes the return of the Harbour Project. With an impressive course and a huge crowd, wakeboarding returns to the sleepy Welsh village in style.

A relatively short trip across the northern side of the Welsh hillside and we arrived at our digs for the week, the Offaxis clubhouse in Pwllheli. A long standing hub for wakeboarding in the area, the clubhouse has its fair share of history and it was well suited to housing the team - our thanks to the Offaxis crew for hosting us. With the tides being at an awkward time in the morning the build team were left to count sheep as the early morning high tide meant we weren’t able to access the build site until lunchtime on the Tuesday. With a depth test at high tide and Freddie showing us his skills on the SUP during the site survey, we were entertained from the get go.

A large wall of rocks on the outskirts of The Abersoch Boat Yard, who kindly donated a large part of their forecourt for the entirety of the build, as well as tools and advice on the abnormally large tides that we had during the event, would provide the perfect standing for the pallet wall ride that had been conjured up. With a kicker transfer to wall ride, flat bar and pallet box planned, we certainly had our work cut out for the build, especially as the build window between tides and light was about seven hours a day. This time would have to include unloading the trailers of materials, building and then completely repacking the two trailers and trucks of all the equipment before the tide came in and trapped us all inside the walls of the harbour.

The Rydium tower stands tall in the Abersoch harbour

Packing up the materials ahead of the build

A few years ago the The Harbour Project was setup as a winch jam between a small group of wakeskaters who built a couple of rails in Abersoch’s narrow harbour. This summer saw the return of the Harbour Project but in a much different guise to that of before. Upgrading from the original pull of the winch to a Rydium two tower cable, plus a group of hand picked riders to travel north and create their very own course - it was set to be a unique and interesting event for all. The concept was simple - the riders design and build whatever they choose from our collected materials and session it throughout a floodlit night jam.

Travelling up to Shropshire and the Rydium site, the build team (consisting of Freddie Carter, Cain Hamilton, James Windsor) had free roam of their neighbouring site, TG Services, who kindly let us strip as much as our hearts desired from their enormous wood pile. Meeting Julian Tomlinson from the Offaxis Nautique crew, with his pickup truck and flat bed trailer we were able to load up a solid amount of rail parts. With a solid wood staircase, long pipes, 20 pallets, boxes, telegraph poles and some old broken roof trusses. It was a varied bunch of treasure that probably made us look like we were building some sort of recycled house! Nevertheless, after a couple of rogue nails poked their way into our skin along the way, it was looking like we were off to a good start.

the harbour project 2014

The harbour in Abersoch is a fairly short and narrow stretch that is, of course, tidal. The issue this brings is in the build. Creating something that can be knocked into the ground makes for a relatively easy process, however when you need to build something that is elevated two metres above where you stand makes things a little harder. It leaves you with a choice to either float the obstacles or to build a larger frame that will support the obstacles and stay in the same place even after a large tide.

Our first project was to create our flat bar. The base would be made from our reclaimed roof trusses, tacked together with the help from Brett Hodgkins who was already in the area and waiting for our arrival. A key player to the team’s success and a long-standing member of the wake community is always a valuable member of any team when it comes to knocking rails together - there used to be a time when all obstacles were made onsite - think about that kids!

While the construction of the flat bar was under way the tide rose rapidly behind us. It left us with half a rail built outside the water, and with nowhere to keep it while the tide was in - it had to go in. A few hands on all sides soon got the three supports in place. A quick addition of the top section of the rail on and it

was suddenly looking all too good to be true. Which of course, it was. The biggest tide of the week came in that night and before we had got our feet up at the Clubhouse, we had news that it was having a bit of a lie down in the harbour. Johnny from Offaxis kindly came to the rescue and took a midnight dip into the chilly waters to secure the rail and preventing our hard work making its way out to sea.

Our first job on the second day was to reset the rail and ensure it wasn’t going to disappear before the event - a bunch of stakes and 30 or so sandbags made sure of that. The task was still looming above us! The largest feature was always going to be the wall ride and the kicker to get onto it. Both had to be solid and secure with the underlying rocks, it was not a place to take a fall or have an obstacle fail on you. Thankfully we didn’t have to deal with either of those issues. Built in two framed sections, the pallet wall was man handled by the entire team along with the recently recruited Rydium team.

After a slightly adventurous securing job, the wall was in place and the second layer was fast taking shape to complete the second obstacle. The kicker was our next hurdle, after scouting the area for a suitable vessel we found an RNLI charity raft that was kindly lent to us to support the wedge. After being told it leaked

we were dubious as to how we might find it the next day. However, she held up well and in fact needed ballast to ensure it wasn’t too much of a wall itself.

The final instalment was a pallet fun box, standing high off the water, the ollie on was formidable to say the least, with half the stair case at one end and open ollie on at the other, it was going to push the pros and their abilities, especially given the night time slot. After some more bashing and screwing we were starting to look like we had a park in place. It was time to test the setup and the cable ahead of the event. Scotty Broome was first on the water, with just riding speeds and turning points being tested we knew the obstacles would still need some height tuning and placement changes. Regardless, Scotty was keen to test the pallet box olllie and accidentally clipped

his tail in doing so. A seemingly minor clip led to a hyper flexing of his back knee leaving him hobbling around for the rest of the event and watching from the sidelines. Freddie took the next runs, ollieing over the box and getting a few hits on the flat bar as we were still waiting to position the wall ride kicker, it was still not operational. This didn’t stop Cain from trying to ollie onto the wall (the wrong way) leaving him with a wrenched shoulder and strictly observational roles for the reminder of the build. James Windsor was eagerly awaiting his new board delivery while watching the boys session their hard work.

Sadly, due to Customs officials taking their time, his board never arrived for the event and he was delegated a commentary position, one that delivered a unique Australian slant to the event.

The course awaits the tide, and a kicker too

Page 72: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

After spending the evening tuning the rails and setting things in position we were left to wait and see if the tide was going to be kind to us and leave our creations alone.

Thankfully it was and we returned on the day of the event to find everything as we had left it. With nothing more than a few anchors to position screws to check, it was time to wait for the tide and the sun to set before the team could finally get to try out the run its entirety. Sam Carne had arrived by this point along with Jonty Green and Toby Yeo, all eager and fresh - the night was shaping up!

With stage lighting around some of the obstacles and a crowd that started forming a couple of hours ahead of schedule, it was suddenly starting to feel like the town was behind the event and that people had been taking notice of the developments in the harbour over the past few days. The banks of the harbour were soon full and people were spilling onto all available land to get a look

at the action. Nick Coates and the already mentioned James Windsor on the mic, the crowd were entertained and kept waiting in great anticipation as we all watched the tide come in and the tension grow.

The crowd was patient as the sea slowly made its way into the harbour and the riders got ready for the off. They were not disappointed. Being at night and not having practiced much, or at all, it was a true test of skill for them all - riding in low light on unknown obstacles without necessarily being able to see the landings too well makes for a great show. With the wall ride transfer being the real crowd pleaser, and the most spectacular crashes! Toby, Sam and Jonty all took flight into the wall but with mixed results, it was Freddie who was the tamer of the wall, with a sick backside transfer, almost clearing the top of the wall in doing so. The tide continued to come in throughout the event in the run up to high tide, the imposing ollies were steadily getting more manageable

as the riders got a real grasp of the course. Jonty and Sam were flying high off the kicker while Toby Yeo got technical on the rail.

Once again, however, Freddie came out firing on all cylinders dropping a big back lip tail, followed by an ollie on to back lip, back 270 out. Super technical and as always, full of style. Freddie stamps his mark on yet another event taking the title after being unanimously voted champion by the riders, taking home a sweet cash prize and the Harbour Project trophy. The award was presented to Freddie by fellow rider and MC for the presentations, Scotty Broome. The presentations were held on the main stage at Glass Butter Beach ahead of their headline act Soul 2 Soul.

After all the work of the week, it was still a great experience to work with the riders to create something unique and all the while enjoying the ride. Bring on The Harbour Project 2015!

2014 UK BOAT NATIONALS

The most prestigious event on the European boat calendar took place for the 16th time this July and as we say every year, the riding blew us all away yet again. In place to provide a platform for riders of all abilities and ages to perform on a bigger stage than most other events, the UK Nationals is the pinnacle of boat riding here in the UK. 2014, back at Quayside where boat riding all began here in the UK and we had yet another historic weekend of action.

As part of three year deal to support the Nationals Mastercraft was back in play as the pulling power behind the event, providing a rather beautiful black and green X-Star as the launch ramp for a 60 plus strong field from the under 10s to the over 40s. Red Bull were also back for the second year running, further strengthening their visible commitment to UK wake. Not only was there behind the scenes event support from this household energy brand but also the usual liquid refreshments, a sports masseuse to ease the aches and pains of the riders and the party starting DJ truck to keep the atmosphere bumping over the two days.

Every year sees this event and many others taking place only because of the help of many behind the scenes, the backbone of this help and infrastructure in the boat scene has always been formed by Wakeboard UK. Headed up by Chairman, Pete Gill, the team of judges, Graham Creedy, Colin Hart, myself, Jonny Lodge and calculators, Sue Creedy and Ann Hart as well as our dock crew, Dave Bryant and Nick Carter all came together alongside world class boat driver Martin James to make the event run smooth as ever.

As is now tradition, to break up the sometimes ‘on tenterhooks’ atmosphere that the pressure cooker of the Nationals creates, we have the winner takes all cash prize Double Up contest for our Open Men rounding off the Saturdays riding. It was a particular corker this year and notable highlights were Edd ‘The Shred’ Blundell getting swallowed whole by his double-up, managing to go down instead of up and at the other end of the spectrum but equally out of control, Jack Hammersley, getting booted higher, by a good six foot, than anyone else. The landing wasn’t so pretty from Jack and the rest of the field couldn’t trump the very first hit from Jorge Gill of a beautifully clean HS 7, taking his first double-up honours and the cash.

Sunday rolled around and the bleary eyed figures of those looking to get the most riding for their money, the last chance qualifiers, were out on the water first. It was the Junior Men and Open Men who had to wrestle with the early start and stand-outs were most definitely Rory Findlay in the Open Men and the banger dropping Irishmen of David Coates and Paul Johnston who secured their finals places deservedly.

Finals time was here and the Groms out first having to wrestle with what was a head high wake for them. It was the youngest of the Overmeer clan who took top honours in the Groms and the first of many podium claims this year for this rather passionate wakeboarding family.

Then, we move on to the next size up, the boys division, which has quite the ridiculous field of talent as proven by their runs being made up of more ‘upside-downers’ and spins than not which is incredible for an under 15 age group. Overmeer number 2, Johan, just missed out on a podium claiming a respectable 4th with Luke Pearson snagging 3rd and the battle between the top two boys becoming an ever more dramatic part of the UK boat scene. It was Matty Muncey this time taking 2nd to Luca Kidd who squeezed ahead with just an extra grab here and there along with a slight edge on tech. These two are sure

to continue setting the riding world alight and the contest scene on edge with their battles. The junior divisions have always offered some incredible riding as is only fit for the age group set to pounce on those sat atop the wakeboarding field. With numerous international titles amongst the girls in this category this fact was only strengthened in 2014. It was however, our reigning national and Euro champ, Katie Batchelor, who fought her way through to the top for a second year.

The same vibe was very much present amongst the Junior Men. With an even bigger turn out than before it meant for a tougher competition for the riders and better entertainment for us. The crazy intense riding of Rory Findlay got everyone amped for this division and the judges writing like the clappers. Not to be overlooked however are the powerhouse steezey skills of relative newcomer Bryce Corrand who’s squat style grabbed inverts, on and off axis rotations and high end tech’ers

were a welcome addition to this group’s line-up, his time training in the US and the lakes of France very apparent. It was these skills that barged their way through to the top spot against fierce competition from the reigning champ Jeff Haddon who took second and yet another Overmeer, Davie, who took 3rd. Watch out Open Men!

Between our Amateur Men and Masters divisions another 20 riders were added to the roster in 2014 and a whole lot more entertainment. Having an amateur division at this style of event is vital so as to encourage those above the age categories but not quite ready to compete in the Open divisions to get involved. It’s this inclusive mindset of the event that enables the sports growth and allows the likes of James Cook, who took 1st in the Amateurs, to ride in the AOD and then dip a toe in the next level of competition such as the Nationals is. More props to our older crew with Matt Crowhurst keeping hold of the title in Masters 1 but pushed hard by the biggest ever field in this division and especially by the rather imposing Philips twins taking 2nd and 3rd. Papa Overmeer, Rene, rounded off

the family medal haul in Masters 2, just behind Mark Osmond and Mark Goldsmith. In the Masters Women, it was great to see all Emma Pickards hard work with the Quayside crew and LDB Wakeschool paying off for her to take home the title.

Now left with just the Open divisions and the top tier of riding and the action most rounded off the weekend on a high. Nancy Creedy made yet another podium finish at a Nationals event with Robbie Rendo taking to the water with some of the best riding we’ve ever seen of her. Lots of grabbed flips and spins including her oh so smooth signatures of a toeside indy back roll and method toeside roll to revert that many a rider wish they could get on lock. It was Megan Barker who’s seemingly unstoppable form was rewarded with her second Nationals title after the best contest run we have seen from any UK or European female rider to date. A run that was rounded off by a UK contest first. - the first mobe to be landed by any girl in a contest pass. It was a skeezer rounding off her two runs and strengthening Megz’s place at the top further.

81 hybridwakemag.com

Page 82: Hybrid Wake Magazine Issue 8

2014 UK BOAT NATIONALS

The day was yet to reach its climax because we had not yet paid witness to our Open Men final and boy were the judges in for a horrible time of it. Last year Sam Carne finally broke the Dan Nott stranglehold on the title but this year it was most definitely not going to be a two horse race. With arguably the most talented field of riders we’ve ever had in this division, from Hammersley to Coates and Johnston, Green and more, all the talk has been surrounding Jorge Gill and Edd Blundell who’s US training exploits aired across the internet have shown just a slice of their capabilities.

Huge hitting passes were laid down by all in qualifying with grabbed inverts, mobes and 7s in abundance throughout. It was still Sam and Dan leading their respective packs going into the finals, giving them the advantage of being last off the dock. With Hammersley and Johnston locking in two pretty testing runs, the pressure was on for the four riders to follow. Edd came next and rounding off an incredible first pass was another UK contest first, an unbelievably poppy and clean backside 7. Edd’s 2nd pass while clean and with some tech and style, didn’t quite match his first. This was to be the story of the remaining riders, each coming out of the blocks blazing but with less impact on their second runs. Jorge laid down all manner of full rotating inverts including a Crow 5 as his huge hit but perhaps slightly gaining an edge on his second

pass with a tidy HS 7 and back roll to blind. Sam and Dan both added to the big hit count, Sam with a tweaked out toeside method 7 and Dan with an unnervingly easy Whirly 5. Their second passes just didn’t have the same flow as the first with a missed grab here and an unintentional trick there. After a painstaking time taken over the decision by the judges, it was prize-giving time. Come the Open Men awards and it was Edd Blundell to make it on to his first podium place in this division, with Sam just ahead of him in 2nd, leaving just one spot left to be claimed by the youngster who’s been working towards this for many years. Claiming his first National Open Men’s title and deservingly so was Jorge Gill. Every one of the finalists but especially the top four, making it one of the most tense and exciting Open Men’s battle to date.

The 16th UK Boat Nationals raised the stakes yet again, further establishing British boat riding as some of the best in Europe and this event as the one to win. PLASTIC PLAYGROUND QUALIFIERS

With so much hype around the main event, the additional slots for the riders were hotly contested. With there being six spots open to riders going through from the Qualification event, it was all to play for. The top six would join 14 of the world’s elite riders in the August showcase and be in with a shot at the $20,000 prize purse. With first place taking home $5,000 and with paid positions all the way to sixth ($1,000) - it’s no surprise there were 50 riders eager to qualify.

Riders were given two single laps to prove their worth to the judges, no warm ups, straight off the dock and onto the running, one full lap ending on the kickers setup off the dock. Each rider was allocated a time to ride and with only one rider on the water at a time, there was no excuses and nothing but clear runs under the spectacular July sun.

With a good field of local riders met with a few international names making the trek over to the UK for a chance at the main event. Antoinne Allaux from France was first off the dock in the alphabetically ordered runnings, stomping a mute heel 7 straight off the dock, it was clear that the day would bring some solid riding. By not having the chance to go out and warm up it was a refreshing format to watch, with one rider on the water every few minutes nothing was missed and fair play couldn’t be questioned.

PLASTIC PLAYGROUND QUALIFIERS

The UK riders had come from far and wide, representatives from lots of the cables throughout the country made an appearance on the water. Those more local to the cable of course have a home advantage but with so much talent on the water there are always going to be some going home disappointed such as Deano Warboys who had a shocker when it came to the crunch. Coming up just short of the qualification cut were Scott Rosewell, Mikey Bland, Joey Battleday and Ryan Peacock. All had some great runs, with some real bangers but sadly they were not to make the final cut. Rounding out the top six was Matt Muncey, a local to the park who combined some super tech hits and a few big airs to bring in the top qualifiers.

Antoine Allaux and Jack Battleday were a close call but with Jack’s huge moby dick off the dock, it was impossible not to notice the young JB rider. CK Koester took third with stylish

method to fake to start things off, a technical transfer on the box followed by a stand out 180 tail press on the hip, rounded off with a massive and clean heel 9.

The top two spots were a tough call and early calls were made but with a more solid overall run Cain Hamilton pipped Freddie Carter to the post with a great couple of runs in both rounds. Cain led with a pinball off the Fooshee wave kicker to start, ollie up transfer on the box and round the bottom corner into the hand rail. What took the top spot was his pool gap 180 switch nose to 360 out followed by another slick 9 to victory. Freddie wasn’t to be beaten off easily, a massive melon heel five off the dock and his favourite nose grab moby dick were among the highlights of the Wraysbury rider.
