Introduction to HURREVAC?

Hurrevac is a hurricane tracking and evacuation decision tool for Gov’t EMA’s

The Report Button allows you to select a report or table from a list of options. You can also access these reports from the Function Tree which we will demo later.


The LOG Button shows you a text log of recent monitoring and download activity.


The yellow check mark in the upper right corner of the window appears when you are not using the latest version of Hurrevac. When you click on it the window below appears and tells you what version you have and the latest version available.

8.Current Storms Tab Data Tree

The current tab is for active storms. A + sign means there’s storms in that basin. The number in () is how many storms are active

Another item in the current TAB is the rainfall forecast. They are issued twice a day, around 8am and 8pm


Each time you turn on the River Gage layer Hurrevac downloads the latest gage information.


Lets look at the Impacts button

When you select a Gage you get this graph.


Lets look at the Crests button

Impacts describe the effects of floods for various stages


Crests show historic high and low water levels


Flood outlooks are currently issued once a day and provide a 5 day forecast. The legend at the bottom gives the 3 types of flooding


HURREVAC monitors over 100 coastal tide gages. When you turn them on they are downloaded. Updated every hour.

When you click on a tide gage you’ll see a graph of expected tide and observed tide. A red arrow shows when the storm will be closest to gage.



9. Working with Archive TAB

The archives TAB contains old storm data as well as historic rain, river, tide and flood data.


The Exercise heading is populated with STM files that are located in a special ExerciseSTMFiles data directory.


The Archives Tab contains storms that have Advisory data stored in them. These go back to 1995 and Andrew in 1992.


Historical plots are for all other historic storms back to 1851 but show only the tracks of the storms. They have no advisory data.


View Tabs

The Map Display window also has Tab features that allow you to look at Advisories, the Tropical Outlook and other reports. When you select the + Tab the report selection window appears.


MAP TOOLS Provide a quick and easy way of changing the appearance of the map and adding additional information.


Zoom Tool - Click-and-Drag zooming

Pan Tool - Click-and-Drag panning

Extent Button - Left-click for full-extent right-click to zoom to local map.

Zoom IN and OUT Buttons - Left-click for 20% zoom in or out, right-click for 40%


Move Storm AHEAD and BACK – Along the Track Line 1 hour/left-click, 6 hours with right-click.

What do the Circles and Colors represent?


Wind Range by hr.– Shows the extent of winds for a particular hour of the forecast.

Forecast Wind Swath – Shows the extent of winds for first 72 hrs of the forecast

Hourly Error Ellipse - Shows you the average Error for each hour along track

Average Error Button – Shows you the average Error in the forecast track.


Storm Track Labels Button – Allows you to turn labels on and off and set label criteria.

Watches/Warnings Button - Allows you to turn W&W on & off and set display criteria.

Wind Probabilities Button - Allows you to turn Wind Probabilities on & off


The Function Tree allows you to change storm features and text on the map, view reports, browse information and execute helpful utilities.

The first 5 items under the Storm Features allow you to do the same thing as the corresponding Tool Bar Buttons only you check the boxes on and off.


This item applies when you are looking at OLD advisories in a storm file. This feature allows you to turn the actual track on and off.


This allows you to temporarily change the track of the storm


This allows you to display the last 3 or 6 advisory tracks over the current advisory


ANNOTATION. The sub-features here allow you to change your storm information box, change your advisory labels, add text to your map, edit wind tag placement, display Range Marks and turn the Disclaimer and Place names on and off.


REPORTS. features under reports can be displayed in a view TAB or a stand alone window. They include: Storm Statistics, Who's in the Error Swath, Wind Decay or how far winds can go inland, Wind Timing, Evacuation Timing, How close the storm will come to you, Facilities Timing, Lists of who will get rain or who will get flooding


Wind Timing is the next function on the list. Note that all the computations done to determine wind timing information is based on the forecast's wind swath prediction.


When you select a report for a single location you will see this window asking you to select a State and County.

The Closest Approach report shows the closest distance, point in time, and direction that a storm is forecasted to approach each county



The Rainfall Report lists all counties expected to get rain in the next 3 days. The Flood List shows all counties expected to have flood problems over the next 5 days.


BROWSERS open up floating windows for the purpose of viewing available surge maps, county clearance time tables and for getting map coordinates and measurements.


Advanced Features Ahead


The Evacuation Clearance Time Browser is used to view Hurricane Evacuation Study clearance times for a selected county.


The Coordinates/Measurements Browser is used to determine the lat/long coordinates of a map location and to make measurements of distance.


The Surge Map Browser is used to view the surge maps from the old Hurrevac2000 program.

The Utilities feature provides options for: •Alternative Data entry•Historical Storm displays•Map default settings•Evacuation option settings•Decision Arc displays•GIS export options and •An Exercise Wizard





The Historical Scan allows you to find and display historical storms back to 1851 that went thru a specified area and meet a variety of criteria that you select.

Lets you select the Hurrevac scenario, category, tourist occupancy and response rate that best fits the current storm.


HURREVAC finds the Largest Storm Category from the Advisory and assumes you have a Medium Tourist Occupancy and a Medium Response Rate.

Decision Time Alert - can be used to notify you of the first forecast advisory that puts the storm within 12 hours of an evacuation decision time for a select county and evacuation scenario.


SAMPLE


The Decision Arc Tool provides a graphical means of showing your Decision Time for evacuation.


ARC Setup… Allows you to select the decision Arc County or Parish and evacuation scenario.


This is a graphic display of a decision arc for Mobile County. This shows the forecast hour of the advisory when the evacuation decision should be made.

The GIS Export Tool creates shapefiles from HURREVAC's storm tracking display

When you execute the GIS Export function you will see a window that allows you to select which data you want to export.


Then you’ll get a window Asking you where you want to save your data.


The Exercise Track Wizard leads you through 5 steps to create a STM file of your own for an exercise.


Steps1. Set a start location and time and date for the storm.2. Set an end location and time and date. Hurrevac

then draws a straight line between the points and places all the 6 hour advisory points.

3. You move the advisory points where you want them to create the track you want.

4. You then edit each advisory the way you want it for track storm category and forward speed.

5. And last you name the storm and save it. Hurrevac HELP gives more detail on what to do in

each step.
