Following an increase in pupil numbers in the Huntington area, Children’s Services secured funding for a new 2 storey, 420 place Primary School with a 26 Place Nursery. The school was built to replace the previous 1 Form Entry Huntington Primary School, situated approximately 1 mile away from the new site. Central government funding, secured by Cheshire West and Chester Council, and school funding was used to build the new school.
The building features Key Stage 1 and 2 classrooms, nursery and reception with secure separate play area, library, staff areas, kitchen, hall and studio. Externally there are formal hard play/games courts and informal hard and soft play areas.
Collaboration to deliver a suitable design in line with budgetOn entering into the Pre-Construction Services Agreement, the contractor was provided with the incumbent design that had been used to secure initial planning approval. It was evident that this design was not favoured by the wider client team, was not developed to full stage 3 and was also unaffordable.
The contractor’s team took immediate ownership of the design and developed a Value Engineering schedule that was collaboratively reviewed and agreed with the client and the school, leading to a revised scheme that was affordable and incorporated minor changes to room layouts to address end user requirements and provide a compliant solution. The effective delivery of the project to budget and ahead of programme resulted in a 100% post completion client satisfaction score.
Social value and sustainability • All targets agreed with the client and set within the CSR plan were met or
exceeded with 98 apprentice weeks, 5 work experience placements, 4 new jobs and 6 community engagement activities provided
• Although there was no BREEAM requirement for the building, a sustainable design was developed for the school resulting in low running costs and an ‘A’ rated as built EPC certifi cate
• The team worked closely with the local community and developed a good relationship during pre-construction and throughout ensuring continued engagement, site visits, minimal disruption and robust traffi c management plans
Kier worked in close collaboration with the Council and other key stakeholders to achieve the necessary savings, whilst improving the design. Kier’s attention to detail was exceptional and the Council, school governing body and wider community are happy with the result.Gavin Griffi th- Project Delivery Manager,Cheshire West and Chester Council
