Elimination of HeavyMetalsExtensive Testing of HumicSubstances in Hungary(Humic/Fulvic Acid) has the capabilityof transferring metals to and frommetallo-proteins in vivo. Theseproteins play a role in metal storageand sequester excess metal ions,
preventing toxicity. Metallo-proteinconcentrations are the highest in theliverwhere metals accumulate in themetallo-thionein portions of thisorgan. Metallo-proteins can be foundin many other human tissues, including small amounts in the bloodplasma, which suggests that theseproteins play a role in the transport ofmetals as well.

of (Humic/Fulvic Acid) gets

saturated, or contains a highconcentration of a metal humate(attachment of metal to humic/fulvic
acid), then (Humic/Fulvic Acid) willtransfer this metal to the protein-type molecules that are able tobind and utilize it.
On the other hand, if the free metalbinding capacity is high, then(Humic/Fulvic Acid) will form
complexes with metals that are freeor attached to metallo-proteins,helping in the excretion of thesemetals (i.e. in the case of toxic heavy
metals like cadmium). Therefore, itmay be concluded that(Humic/Fulvic Acid) may act
somewhat like metallo-proteinsdue to its chelating activity andion exchange capacity. Whenmetals are a part of a metallo-protein, they can modulate itsbiochemical reactions.
Primarily, investigations have
focused on the ability of a(product), containingstandardized (Humic/Fulvic Acid), todeliver essential minerals while

also eliminating toxic heavymetals like lead, cadmium, andmercury. Oral consumption of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) administereddaily for six weeks significantlydecreased blood cadmium levelsand increased urine cadmium in31 adult workers continuouslyexposed to occupational cadmium.
In themajority of subjects, initialabnormally low serum iron levels
increased, and markers of kidneyand liver function improved.
Research indicates that absorption ofcadmium from the gastrointestinaltract and its toxicity are influenced bythe supply of element such as Zn, Cu,Fe, Se, Ca, and Vitamin C. The ability
of (Humic/Fulvic Acid), as an ionexchanger, may free its traceelements bound in chelate formfor uptake into the tissues andbind other elements that are
readily available, such as cadmium. At the same time, a number ofessential elements are providedthat may decrease the ability ofcadmium uptake and absorption in

the gastrointestinal tract. The
improvement of liver and kidneyenzymes could be attributed to theeffect of the preparation on the micro-element status and balance in thebody, which would then play a role inthe functioning of these enzymes.
(Humic/Fulvic Acid) was studied forits effect on the metabolism oftrace elements in 51 healthy adultvolunteers. Following two-weeks oforal administration of (Humic/FulvicAcid), blood lead and cadmiumlevels decreased significantly.Furthermore, (Humic/Fulvic Acid)
decreased absorption of cadmiumand lead from food orenvironmental exposure based onurine measures of these metals.(Humic/Fulvic Acid) had nosignificant effect on blood parametersstudied (i.e. haematocrit, haemoglobin, leukocyte count; SGOT,GGT, ALP; and, Na, K, Ca, and P).
Further pieces of evidence of thebeneficial effects of (Humic/FulvicAcid) have been documented inclinical trials evaluating
occupational and

environmental heavy metalexposure. In a three-week
clinical observation with subjectsscreened for routine occupationalhealth check-ups, 21 subjects were
found to have higher than usual Pblevels (exceeding 1.0 micromol/l,the health risk limit being 1.5micromol/l) and 26 subjects had Cd
levels exceeding the acceptedhealth limit (0.08 micromol/l).
Subjects given (Humic/Fulvic Acid)
showed a significant decrease intheir blood Pb and Cd levelsfollowing the daily oral intake of(Humic/Fulvic Acid). No
significant or pathological changeswere observed in the blood chemistryof these subjects. Additionally,(Humic/Fulvic Acid) was administeredorally to six adult subjects withmoderately elevated lead levels thatdid not require penicillamine.(Humic/Fulvic Acid) was administered
to each subject for three weeks.Four of these six subjects (66%)had significantly lower blood leadlevels following three weeks ofdaily administration. The rate of

decrease in lead levels in thesubjects was similar to that
reported for penicillamine. Twopatients in the (Humic/Fulvic Acid)group reported mild side effectsand therapy was discontinued. The results from these clinical
observations indicate that reducingtoxic levels of heavy metals inhumans is apparently influencedby treatment with the(Humic/Fulvic Acid product)following its administration.
Two open clinical trials examining theeffects of (Humic/Fulvic Acid) involunteers exposed to lead haveprovided further documentation ofthe beneficial effects of (Humic/FulvicAcid). Twenty individuals with highoccupational lead exposure weregiven 20 ml per day of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) forsix weeks.Blood levels of lead decreasedmarkedly and significantly from the
beginning of the study whencompared to the control group. Noneof the clinical or haematologicalparameters changed during the
course of the treatment. Two

subjects reported mild andtransitory diarrhea, whichnormalized without stopping
treatment. Four subjectsreported moderate nausea andone a transitory headache.Another open clinical trial in 60subjects has demonstrated a similarbut not as profound outcome. At the
end of a 12-week administrationperiod, the change in serum leadparameters became significantcompared to pre-administrationvalues. The results of this trial arenot as profound as the six-weekadministration of the (Humic/FulvicAcid) in volunteers exposed to lead.
Although the reduction in blood leadlevels was significant, a longertreatment time was needed due tothe smaller dosage of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) that wasadministered to the individuals. The
examined laboratory parameters
(i.e. serum blood, routinelaboratory tests, liver and kidneyfunction, and urine examination)exhibited no significant changes, which supported the safety of

(Humic/Fulvic Acid) in the
recommended dosage. Data fromthe two former studies indicatethat the higher the serum or bloodlead level, the more significantreduction in this parameter canbe observed.Furthermore, doses of20 ml per dayof (Humic/Fulvic Acid) appear moreeffective in the treatment ofoccupational lead exposure.
Studies in animals have confirmedthe beneficial effects of (Humic/FulvicAcid) on heavy metal chelation. Some studies using isolated humic
acid have demonstrated that itdoes affect cadmium speciationin the intestine and thus absorptionand distribution of this heavy metal.Additional studies using
(Humic/Fulvic Acid) in animalsprovide support for the ability of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) to chelateheavy metals. Adult pigs were fedvarying doses of (Humic/Fulvic Acid)or a control supplement and the
excretion of a mercuryradioisotope previouslyadministered, was examined. Those

animals that were fed (Humic/Fulvic
Acid) excreted more of themercury isotope, than did thecontrol animals.Although the data was notsignificant, due to the smallnumber of animals, this studywarrants further research todocument the efficacy of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) in alleviatingmercury accumulation.
The effect of (Humic/Fulvic Acid) on
the absorption and incorporation ofisotope-labelled strontiumchloride has also beendocumented. Not only did
(Humic/Fulvic Acid) slow thestrontium absorption and its
incorporation, it also affected theurinary excretion of this toxicelement. Theurinary excretion of strontium wasless intensive in the animals fed with(Humic/Fulvic Acid). he authors
concluded that a lower amount of thetoxic element complex was absorbedwhen (Humic/Fulvic Acid) waspresent.
This same effect has been

documented in humans exposedto cadmium and lead. Based onurine measures of these metals,
(Humic/Fulvic Acid) decreased theabsorption of cadmium and leadfrom food or environmentalexposure.
Furtherdata indicate that cadmiumand lead urinary excretion
increased in humans during theadministration of (Humic/FulvicAcid), indicating the removal ofthis toxic element. Although it ispremature to state the exactmechanism of action occurring inthese animals and humans exposed
to various heavy metals, it is safe topresume that the absorption andurinary excretion of heavy metalsis affected by (Humic/Fulvic Acid).
Evidence for the protective effect of(Humic/Fulvic Acid) bound withmicroelements against
environmental exposure toirradiation has also been provided inthe literature. The radio-protectiveeffect of standardised (Humic/Fulvic
Acid) was tested in female Wistarrats. (Humic/Fulvic Acid) was given

in one dose of 240 mg/animal (960mg/kg body weight) and the rats
were subjected to whole bodyirradiation. Baseline and outcomedata (white blood cell, erythrocyte, platelet counts, andtotal serum iron binding capacity)were taken to substantiate claimsof efficacy of the (Humic/Fulvic Acid)
treatment. The results showed improvementsin platelet counts (leukocytes andthrombocytes) which had markedlydecreased after irradiation.Platelet counts began tonormalise in the control group
one week earlierthan in theuntreated control group of rats with
just one dose of the (Humic/Fulvic
Acid) formula. No side effects ortoxicities were noted whileadministering (Humic/Fulvic Acid)to this group of animals.
As indicated by the previous data, thestandardised (Humic/Fulvic Acid)
appears to be an effectivechelator of offending heavymetals. Furthermore, it shows a

12/13
protective effect against radiationin vivo. Its benefits could beutilized in the prevention of heavymetal contamination in workers inhazardous occupations, bydecreasing the absorption andincreasing the elimination of toxicheavy metals like cadmium.
Furthermore, this standardised
(Humic/Fulvic Acid) would bebeneficial in eliminating heavymetals that can be accumulatedthroughout a lifetime ofenvironmental exposure, andalleviating the physiologicalconsequences that occur with
irradiation.Animal studies show a similarmechanism of action whencomparing them with the studiesin humans. Both indicate that(Humic/Fulvic Acid) may work todecrease the absorption of these
heavy metals as indicated by itseffects on the excretion of thesetoxic elements in the urine.
