SOFTWARE NEWS
Konica Minolta has launched an enterprise platform which integrates directly into legal practice management systems, such as ProLaw, Tabs3, PC Law and Timeslips, Proman and more, offering an ideal option for billing back clients and matter accounts.
“The software essentially allows the legal practice to spend more time working and less time worrying about the billing process; of course, this has a direct effect on keeping print costs in check through printing efficiency and flexibility,” said Mohammed Vachiat, software product manager at Konica Minolta.
He highlighted that with its innovative low-cost architecture, modular software approach and add-on options, this application provides a full range of benefits.
Advantageous too, is the software’s capability to offer variable pricing between users, clients, matters and projects – that is, calls can be priced according to the number dialled with per-second billing. Its simple administration, which aligns with environmental policies and extensive graphical reporting capabilities, adds an additional edge to the software.
To ensure a sound workflow of the law practice, the embedded copier interface is consistent with the workstation print interface, meaning users only have to learn one system and one set of terminology.
Offering efficient print queue management as well as the convenient definition of print policies and rules, Vachiat points out that the solution effectively answers the legal sector’s requirements with regard to reliable output management.
Importantly too, because it is installed on an organisation’s server the application can also track, manage and account for any print job produced on the network. In addition, the applications, monitoring and accounting capabilities can include local printers, providing full control and transparency with regard to what is printed, when, by whom and on which device.
Users benefit from secure printing because confidential print jobs are no longer lying around unattended in output trays, where they might fall into the wrong hands.

Konica Minolta launches the
AccurioLabel 190 Digital Label Press
Konica Minolta launched the AccurioLabel 190 digital label press to the South African market which has been developed and manufactured in co-operation with Danish company, Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM).
Konica Minolta’s AccurioLabel 190 provides a range of new benefits such as in-line finishing capability, slitting while printing, accommodates larger media rolls to promote uninterrupted printing for 1,000 linear meter, single-phase power, web guiding systems on both unwinder and rewinder as well as pneumatic tension control to mention but a few.
The AccurioLabel 190 fills the gap between entry level and high-end digital printing presses and will benefit clients from stable colour consistency while using true 1,200 x 1,200 dpi at 8 bit colour technology to produce offset-like quality. No pre-coating is required avoiding additional label manufacturing costs, providing a wider selection of media capabilities from traditional media suppliers as well as an increase in productivity. Converters benefit from its ease of operation, production flexibility, fast turnaround and variable data printing capabilities, as well as world-class local support, service, spares and consumables throughout Konica Minolta’s 70 direct and indirect channels in southern Africa.
Konica Minolta in South Africa continues to grow its reputation within industrial print markets after several successful digital label press installations.
The AccurioLabel 190 allows label converters to capitalise on the short-run market – a sector that has traditionally been difficult and expensive to enter with current label technologies. Although the AccurioLabel 190 Press has all the quality characteristics of high-end machines, it offers the convenience of smaller systems, and is perfect for the versioning of variable data labels, label proofs, sampling, short runs on-the-fly and custom designs for promotional purposes. It is a truly complementary system that can benefit existing label converters as well as giving new printers an opportunity to enter the market. In addition, Konica Minolta is offering users an all-inclusive maintenance charge. This static, unwavering ‘flat-rate’ cost is hugely beneficial to label printers as it allows them to prepare an accurate estimate for any job, eliminating the risk of potential loss through incorrect cost calculations.
Konica Minolta’s proven digital electrophotographic dry toner technology for labels is used extensively at customer sites across the world and this includes several successful installations in southern Africa.
ADVANTAGES
• High Productivity
• Offset-like quality
• Connect to finishing equipment
• Ease of use

See what clients have to say about the Accurio 190 Digital Label Press:
“The Konica Minolta machine gives us exactly the
quality we are looking for. The print results are good,
resembling offset, and the colours remain in place –
scratch-resistant. Moreover, the physical dimensions
of the machine are absolutely ideal for us.”
Jarle A. Skarseth, General Manager
“We were aware of the good quality and reliability that
Konica Minolta stands for in general. When we looked
at the machine and analysed the combination of the
print quality and the price, we were fully convinced:
the print quality can definitely keep up with machines
in the higher segment. And some of our customers
without experience in digital were really blown away.
Additionally, we value the personal relationship with
the Konica Minolta representatives, it ‘felt right’ from
the start. This acquisition surely paid off well for us.”
Phil Achurch, General Manager
“The fact that we can now meet requirements for
short runs and fast turnaround times will surely pay
dividends. The quality produced off the Konica Minolta
digital label press is undeniably superb. Another plus
point is that no pre-treatment of materials is required.
Not only is this press amazingly compact, it is also
easy to run.”

Shredding the misconceptions of print
Day in and day out, we are faced with messages about the harm that printing does to our environment. This is partly due to a misconception that the paper used in your company printer is from a rainforest that was torn down. Few people realise that all paper in South Africa is produced from plantation-grown trees, recycled paper or bagasse (sugar cane fibre). We are told that tablets, laptops and other smart devices are eco-friendly with no impact on our forestry, but this is simply not true.
South Africa’s timber plantations lock up 900 million tons of CO2 a year, which is a massive environmental service and a key means of mitigating climate change. Forests mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen through the natural process of photosynthesis. If it weren’t for the pulp and paper industry operating worldwide for the last 150 years, the CO2 levels in the atmosphere would be five percent higher (about 0.5 degrees) than they are at present. Managed forests play an important role for a sustainable future. Over 80 percent of South African plantations are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ranking South Africa as having the highest level of international certification in the world.
Some 600 million trees across 762,000 hectares are specifically farmed for use in pulp and paper manufacturing, just as maize was planted for our cereal, and wheat for our bread.
While the print industry cannot stop the digital age of communication and its convenience, the electronic distribution of information should not be flaunted as being more environmentally friendly than print. Every decision to communicate has some impact on the environment. In fact, server farms that power computers have become the fastest growing users of fossil fuel in the world, and the amount of energy they use is doubling every year. Consider that manufacturing a computer typically requires the mining and refining of dozens of minerals and metals, including gold, silver and palladium, as well as the extensive use of plastics and hydrocarbon solvents. Most computers come from overseas on either ships or planes – the two types of transportation with the greatest carbon footprint. And, that’s before they are shipped on trains or trucks domestically.
Whether we e-mail or send a letter, we consume energy and resources. There are environmental trade-offs in every choice we make, and there is no simple ‘right answer’, says Leon Minnie, manager, production print at Konica Minolta.
11
One doesn’t realise that reading a document on screen produces more carbon dioxide (CO2) than printing out the same document. A printed document can be read over and over again without further emissions and can also be recycled.
• A 700-page printed document emits 85g of CO2 (one copy can be read over and over again without further emissions).
• Reading it on a computer for one hour emits 226g of CO2 every time.
• Burning the 700-page document to CO2 is estimated to emit 300g of CO2 for every copy.
• Burning it to DVD is estimated to emit 350g of CO2 for every copy.
Looking at our own country, paper’s impact on the South African economy has been a key contributor since 1970 and its annual growth surpasses the international average. Much of this was invested in local resources, innovation and people power. In 2013, the forestry-to-paper value-add to the local economy was R18.2 billion and equated to 0.6% to South Africa’s gross domestic product. Around 150,000 people are employed in this sector covering forestry, pulp and paper manufacturing to recycling, according to Forestry South Africa. Imagine this impact on a global scale?
Modern commercial printing has significantly enhanced sustainable practices in recent years. From recycling to energy usage, commercial printers and manufacturers, like Konica Minolta, are making great strides in reducing their environmental footprints.
These include:
• Purchasing products, materials and services from individuals and organisations that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability
• Gaining third-party certification credentials
• Reducing the impact of chemicals by using vegetable-based inks, eco-friendly soy inks, alcohol-free chemistry and aqueous coatings
• Using biodegradable packaging materials and waste paper instead of petroleum-based foam peanuts
• Using a higher percentage of paper grades that are recycled, post- consumer and third-party forest certified to be from responsible sources
• Educating employees on environmental information, recycling procedures and certification training
• Equipping presses with ink monitoring devices to reduce waste
• Recycling printing plates, to name a few
A future without print or paper would have a devastating effect on society and is not the immediate answer.
It is the paper, but equally so, the print industry’s responsibility to be more influential in addressing governments’ and corporates’ ideology or ignorance of a paperless world. The fact is, paper is still as relevant as it was before electronic devices and should be promoted as a key product for environmental sustainability. It should have an equal importance to future electronic technology and water. The credentials and activities of paper are hardly being adequately communicated to the sector’s key stakeholders.
We have international summits about global warming and sustainability for our children, but yet we are blind to the biggest and most impactful product that addresses those requirements in totality - the paper and print industry is ignored as a suitable commodity for our future society. Very few industries can compete with the environmental benefits of pulp and paper, whether these are in first or third-world countries.
Whether we e-mail or send a letter, we
consume energy and resources. There are
environmental trade-offs in every choice we
make, and there is no simple ‘right answer.’
Effective stewardship requires a careful
examination of the bigger picture, one that
encompasses the entire lifecycle, from raw
materials to energy use and end of life, to
fully understand the impact and performance
of both electronic media and print on paper.

The 10.1-inch multi-touch panel makes the device and the intuitive user interface easy to operate. The devices are highly customisable through the creation of own user interfaces according to exact user needs. HDD mirroring in combination with first-class security features minimise the possibility of data loss.
The C759 has enhanced eco-performance with standard embedded Air-Cleaning unit and UFP-filter, Excellent Energy Star 3.0 TEC (4,3 / 5,2 kWh/week), BAM, Reduced Sleep Mode power consumption 0,5 Watt (or only 0,2 Watt in ErP mode) and Dynamic self-learning Eco-Timer.
Additionally, by relying on the award-winning Simitri HD Toner technology with eco-friendly biomass as an essential ingredient, maximum print quality comes with sustainability benefits. Simitri® HD E toner fuses at a lower temperature, which brings several benefits for professional printers, it puts money in your pocket by saving electricity, and it also increases the range of materials that can be handled by the printer engine. It allows the printing of labels, envelopes, glossy papers and heavyweight papers, at the same time reduces paper curling.
The printed output is more durable and consistent, maintaining print quality especially when producing corporate brochures. With the colour vibrancy and the 1,200 x 1,200 dpi 8 bit colour technology, the devices also assist customers to stand out from the competition in the market place.

With conventional flexo and offset printing, it is hardly possible to produce such orders profitably. However, they can be processed
easily and efficiently thanks to the flexibility of digital printing.
