Warren County Government

Document ShreddingWarren County government recycled more than 13 tons of paper fi les in less than a year’s time instead of incinerating them, county offi cials announced at the April 3 Recycling Seminar of local recycling coordinators.

Freeholder Director Edward J. Smith commended the effort as he read a letter from Warren County Depart-ment of Public Works Director Alex J. Lazorisak to coun-ty Recycling Coordinator Victor Camporine outlining how the county signifi cantly boosted its recycling.

“This shows how some simple changes in the way we operate can make a great difference,” Smith remarked.

According to Lazorisak, the WCDPW’s Buildings and Grounds Division has the responsibility to pick

up and destroy paper fi les upon the request of each county department. In the past, fi les slated for destruc-tion were brought to the energy-from-refuse incinera-tor located in Oxford, a process that was “very time consuming and the material was not being recycled,” Lazorisak wrote.

In May 2013, Lazorisak began to have the documents professionally shredded, and then recycled. In less than a year’s time, Warren County recycled 26,110 pounds of paper through this new approach, Lazorisak wrote. Moreover, the Buildings and Grounds Division recycled 42,806 pounds of metal, consisting of old library shelving, fi le cabinets, desks and other metal items that were no longer usable.

LATEX PAINT DISPOSAL

Here’s how to properly disposed of latex paint:

1. Make sure the paint can is ½ full or less. (If the can is more than ½ full, pour the excess into another container, like a milk jug, coffee can or trash bag.)2. Add a clay-based kitty litter or speedy dry so that the can is ¾ full.3. Stir paint/kitty litter or speedy dry mixture.4. If liquid paint remains, add more kitty litter or speedy dry.5. Allow paint/kitty litter or speedy dry mixture to dry until it is no longer pourable.6. Dispose of can in the garbage.

***DO NOT PUT THE LID BACK ON THE PAINT CAN!

Paint cans will NOT be picked up by your trash hauler if he/she can’t see that the paint is dry.

OIL-BASED PAINT DISPOSAL

Oil-based paint is a hazardous & fl ammable material. It can be disposed of at one of the PCFAWC’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.

What To Do With Excessive Grass GrowthDouble Mow: Set the mower higher than usual and cut no more than the top third of the grass. In a day or two set the mower height down and bring the lawn down another 1/3 of its height. Continue this process until you reach the desired height.

Mulch Heavy Clippingsinto the Garden: Bag or rake the clippings and apply them to your garden as mulch. Spread them an inch deep, to cool the soil, retain water, prevent erosion and compaction, and smother weed seeds.

Mix Them with the Soil: Soils can be improved by adding organic matter. Added organic materials make heavy clay soils become more productive, and sandy soils retain more water.

Compost: Grass speeds up your composting, but can cause odors and deplete oxygen if not properly managed. If you compost large amounts of grass, turn the pile often with a pitchfork. Contrary to popular belief, clippings don’t cause thatch. Thatch is formed from the accumulation of dead roots and stems. The more you fertilize and water your lawn, the more it grows and the faster thatch accumulates.
