Tokyo is rich in variety. Each region, including

Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Akihabara and Roppongi,

has its own peculiarities. One of the more interesting

areas around Yanaka, near Ueno station, is called

“Shitamachi.” There are many temples and shrines in this area

and you can sense a taste of the past when you visit. The

family-run Sawanoya, the most well-known ryokan (inn)

among foreign tourists, is located here.

The ryokan has only 12 rooms, but between 5,000 and

6,000 tourists stay each year. Ninety percent of the guests are

foreigners, of which 90 percent are westerners. Why do they

have so many foreign guests? Sawanoya owner Mr. SAWA

Isao explains: “This is related to the changing of Japanese

traveling styles.” Sawanoya was founded by the mother of Mr.

Sawa’s wife Yoneko in 1949.

In the early stages, school excursion groups and

groups of traveling guests were their main source of 

income, but over time, the number of these guests

decreased as travelers selected to stay in other areas.

As a result, the

ryokan’s owner Mr.Sawa looked for a way

to attract business

guests coming to Tokyo. However, as many companies built

their head offices in Tokyo during Japan’s period of rapid

economic growth, the number of these guests also decreased.

On the other hand, many business hotels with single rooms

were being built in convenient locations. Subsequently, the

number of Sawanoya’s guests continued to decrease.

The family reduced the number of rooms from 24 to 12,

which were converted to apartments to cover their living

expenses. Sawanoya’s operations plummeted by about 50

percent, creating hopeless amounts of red ink on the

company’s books. Mr. Sawa had to lay off their employees

and he himself resorted to taking a job as a helper at the

banquet hall in the Daiichi Hotel. In July 1982, there were no

guests at all for three straight days.

Ms. Tricia LEE, an American who came to Japan on her

honeymoon, said with satisfaction, “As this area is quiet, I can

relax here. I love tatami rooms and the soft light that comes

through the shoji screen.” Sawanoya has served many guests

who have been introduced by past guests, as well as those

who come back. Ms. Urusla ZULCH, a German

guest, smiled when she said, “I was introducedby a Mexican friend. It is clean and comfortable

here.”

French student Degouys ESTELLE stayed at the ryokan for

two weeks in 2005 and made eight day-long reservations this

year. “I like this ryokan because it is quiet and friendly and

feels like a family home.” This year she joined in the neigh-

borhood bon dancing wearing  yukata (Japanese summer

kimono). She says she is very fond of katsudon (pork bowl),

udon (noodles) and zarusoba (buckwheat noodles). She seemsto be quite enjoying her stay in Japan. Mr. Sawa is taking the

role of her father in Japan.

Sawanoya’s present occupancy rate now surprisingly

exceeds 90 percent. It is ironical that the small family-run

ryokan and its Shitamachi location which were deserted byJapanese guests is now a big attraction among foreign tourists.

In Shitamachi, caring humanity still exists. These people

maintain close communication and live helping each other.

Their honest lifestyle itself acts as a tourism resource.

from our guests. A Canadian guest who returned

home sent me some mail saying, ‘My son who

went with me says the most unforgettable scene

he witnessed in Japan was Sawa-san’s grand-

children riding in a bus to their kindergarten.’ I

learnt that what impresses guests is not in what I wanted to

show, but simply our common daily lives.”

He continued, “A friend of mine took his guest to experi-ence Japanese cuisine including a full course meal, but he

recounted that the guest said that the most delicious food was

croquettes he bought from a street

stall.” Mr. Sawa realized that some

had to reconsider his idea of ‘true

service’ and stopped carrying guests’

It seems Sawanoya’s success is owed greatly to Mr. Sawa’s

warm and big-hearted character, in addition to his passion. He

is providing data, or what should be called “Sawanoya’s

Know-How” to many different organizations. Tokyo

Convention & Visitors Bureau analyzes tourism statistics

using the data. “By sending off information, I receive

more information,” Mr. Sawa says. To prove it, he has had

more than 800 interviews.

Mr. Sawa’s achievements have even

been officially recognized when he was

appointed as a “Tourism Ambassador” by

the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, whichwants to use his talents to attract tourists to Japan on a national

level. However, he has no intention to make Sawanoya itself 

bigger, since he well knows that the biggest attraction for

Sawanoya is its “family ryokan” style. The TV family drama-

like stories of Sawanoya’s will no doubt continue.

One hundred and seventy members of the

Hakone Feudal Lords Procession will parade

six kilometers along the old Tokaido roads and

hot spring town streets. In the Edo era, the feudal lords of 

each region used to travel in procession as they were ordered by the

Shogun to work in Edo (present day Tokyo) for certain periods of 

time. This procession has now been revived. Furthermore, Yumoto

A festival run by Musashino city, Tokyo, based on the theme

of “Multi-Cultural Co-Existence.” Every year it is crowded

with about 3000 participants. This year the local shop ownerswill join the festival. There will be many events including home

cooking demonstrations from 15 countries, stalls with multi-

cultural themes, puppet shows, music and dance, “Volunteer

world,” “Multi-cultural confectionary plaza,” picture exhibi-

tions, art works and demonstrations held by foreign artists,

“Joyful square,” “Multi-cultural cafes” and so on. Held on

Ａ light and sound event, produced by ISHII Motoko, a top

lighting designer. It is called “Kousai Jikuu (Light & Color in

Time & Space)” and held at Tokyo National Museum, the build-ings of which represent architecture from the Meiji era to the

Heisei era. This is known as a popular spot for architecture fans.

The event makes the best use of this group of construction cre-

ations, their gardens and the location surrounded by the trees of 

Ueno, and you are sure to enjoy this special lighting together with

the live stage performance of traditional Japanese music. Held

from October 31 to November 5 at Tokyo National Museum.

ARAKI Nobuyoshi is well-known by the name of 

“Arachy,” as a photographer who represents contemporary

Japan. He is highly reputed worldwide since he took radicalpictures that have a strong impact on society. This large scale

one-man exhibition introduces 400 of his pictures taken from

1963 to the present, and also 200 new pictures. Focusing on

the ever changing theme of “Tokyo,” people’s lives, their

loneliness, sorrow and joys of life are expressed. Held from

“Our Landscape: 400 years of European Paintings of the

State Hermitage Museum” will be held at Tokyo Art Museum.

The Museum is located in Russia, and is considered to be one

of the world’s largest art museums. It boasts of having

approximately 3 million art works. In this exhibition, about 80

oil paintings drawn by 75 artists based on the theme “City,

Nature and People” are introduced. These include works

painted by artists who belonged to the 15th century Venetian

school of art, to those by modern great masters such as Monet,

Gauguin, Renoir and Picasso. Held from October 19 to

December 24. Admission fee: ¥1,400.

long story about the complicated lives of noble people in theImperial Court during the Heian era in Japan. This book is said

was a little girl due to the influence of her mother. Manami

was 16 when she first began earnestly creating her own music

be broadened.” This thought set her on the road to achieving

her dream.

I think it’s funny myself.”

intensely. It was natural that she started from the lowest level.

Then, as a result of her efforts, her English reached the level

many unexpected responses as well as recording offers from

several British recording companies.

Dr.: In short, it is about leaders’ ambitions, the people who

CIA: Can you explain some of the details?

Dr.: Up until around the mid 20th century, dynasties had

ruled in many countries of the world. In other words, a family

who won in a power struggle in the past had ruled the country

from generation to generation. Naturally, all of the nation’s

wealth was centered with the family and the majority of 

citizens were forced into hardship. Citizens’ dissatisfaction

was often oppressed by a forceful organization controlled by

the leading family, so that the population has no choice but to

tolerate the situation.

Dr.: Surprisingly, Rumanian President CEAUSESCU, who

ended up being killed in miserable circumstances, initially

implemented good policies for his people. And South Korean

President CHUN Doo Hwan, who was later sentenced to

death, warned himself when he came to power saying,

“Gaining power will make people corrupt.”

Dr.: There are many villains around the world who want to

gain a share of the benefits of the leader and suggest many

plots to do so. Then gradually, leaders start to embezzle

national wealth.

right?

Dr.: Of course, not. The ruling system has

changed today as elections are carried out,

but the leaders’ plots are the same. Leader

candidates can only win elections with the support

of certain regions or industries. In other words, they

cannot become the leader unless they represent the

interests of certain groups. Therefore, they use poli-

tics for their benefit. They never stand for ordinary

people, much less weak people.

The characteristic of “vague expression” in which the

speaker shows concern for others’ peace-of-mind is related to

the desire in Japan to maintain a harmonious spirit and avoid

disputes. It is seen everywhere in Japan. Take as an example

the situation where you cause a major problem for someone,

but they are only partly to blame. In the USA, you would

blame their error and make excuses as if you are blameless.

This is because if you admit it was your fault, you will very

likely be liable for a large amount of financial compensation.

In Japan, most Japanese will not say that the fault lies with

the other person; they will instead apologize sincerely. Seeing

someone not apologize will make Japanese very angry.

Generally, the more you apologize, the less compensation you

will be asked for. Japanese place more importance on caring

for others than on logic. Japanese seldom sue others. Even if a

dispute arises, they will try to settle it through talks. This is in

contrast to the USA where many disputes are solved in court.

A spirit of harmony is also seen in Japanese business. In

Japan, when someone proposes a plan, many companies have

a practice of obtaining approval from superiors and everyone

else concerned. You can then get full cooperation from them

to carry out the proposal. In addition, the person who made

the proposal is rarely blamed even when the plan ends in

failure. Non-Japanese often point out that no one makes a

decision at a meeting. But Japanese place importance on

gaining the consensus of all concerned,

Harmony is also maintained in the commercial world. In the

USA, comparative advertisements that often highlights the

superiority of a company’s products over that of rival companies

Since the United Nations declared 1967 as the

“International Year of Tourism” and proclaimed the slogan

“Tourism, a Passport to Peace,” there has been a massive

increase in the number of travellers worldwide. According to

a survey by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),

763.28 million people traveled abroad in 2004. When you

look at the ranking of travellers by country in 2003, Germany

comes in at first place with 74.8 million travellers, followed

by England and the USA, and Japan takes 15th place.

On the other hand, when you look at the international rank-

ing of countries that accepted foreign visitors in 2004, France

ranks first with 75.12 million tourists, followed by Spain, the

USA, China, Italy and England. Japan comes in at 30th place.

Approximately 6.73 million foreigners visited Japan in 2005,

which is a record. Looking at the places they visited, Tokyo

was the most popular destination with 58.2% visitors,

followed by Osaka with 21.6%, Kyoto (17.4%), Kanagawa

(16.4%) and Chiba (13.0%).

Koreans largest visitor group to Japan

The number of foreign tourists visiting Japan is increasing

thanks to campaigns such as “Yokoso Japan” promoted by the

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. However,

regretfully, the number of foreigners traveling Japan is less

than 40% of the number of Japanese who travel abroad.

When the amount of money spent by foreign tourists in Japan

is subtracted from the amount of money spent by Japanese

travelers abroad, the result is a large loss for Japan. This

means that Japanese spend a money that the country earns

from overseas credit and exporting while traveling overseas.

Looking at foreign tourists to Japan by region, travelers

from Asia number 4.63 million, or 68.8% of the total. This is

followed by North America with one million, Europe with 0.8

million and then Oceania with 0.24 million. To look at visitors

numbers by nationality, Koreans make up the largest portion

of visitors to Japan for the seventh consecutive year with l.75

million. This is followed by Taiwan with l.27 million, the

USA with 0.82 million and China with 0.95 million visitors

(including 0.3 million from Hong Kong).

In spite of the long distance separating the countries, Japanese

make up the biggest group of visitors to the USA, which are the

third largest group to visit Japan. This seems natural since the

relationship between both countries is very good. It is interesting

to note that many Japanese are traveling to China and Korea,

where anti-Japanese policies exist. On the other hand, many

people from both of those countries are constantly visiting

Japan. It seems that politics has very little to do with traveling

and that geographical proximity is more important.

Japanese have basically either Japanese-style or western-

style breakfasts. The typical Japanese breakfast includes rice,

fish, natto (fermented soybeans), raw egg, dried seaweed,

together with miso soup, Japanese pickles and green tea. On

the other hand, a western-style breakfast might include toasted

bread, ham or sausage, egg (sunny-side up or scrambled),

together with either tea or coffee.

Foreigners living in Japan have many opportunities to eat

out. Lots of tea rooms sell breakfast sets, which are generally

called “Morning Sets.” Many busy businessmen often buy

these. In addition, not a few Japanese buy onigiri (rice ball)

and tea at a convenience store and eat them in the office.

It is safe to say that there are three ways to have lunch. One

of them is to have lunch which is brought from home. When a

man is having it this way, the lunch is called “aisai bentou”

(beloved wife’s lunch) and he may be ridiculed by his

co-workers. The second way is to buy a lunch box at a conve-nience store and eat it either in the office or outside. The third

way is to have lunch in a restaurant. In Japan, especially in big

cities, there is a large variety of restaurants to choose from.

 Izakaya are very popular among foreigners

As for a light lunch, noodles, especially ramen are popular,

along with the many fast food chains such as hamburger

outlets. Sushi shops with their revolving tables, which are

quite cheap, are also very popular. Speaking of ordinary

restaurants, many of them provide “lunch menus” — that

means they serve set lunches that change from day to day atprices much cheaper than offered in the evenings.

Many people cook their dinner at home, but there are now

more and more people purchasing “souzai” (half-made dishes

that are easily cooked by just heating or adding something)

and instant foods. You can buy these foods at supermarkets

and specialized shops. When you go out to eat,  Izakaya,

where people can easily enjoy Japanese dishes including

everything from “ yakitori” (roast chicken) to “ yakisoba”

(chow mein), for reasonable prices while drinking, are popular

among foreigners. “Family Restaurants,” that serve a variety

of food for reasonable prices, are suitable for families to gofor dinner.

In Japan’s big cities, you can enjoy eating ethnic dishes

from all around the world, the information of which can easily

be found through free papers and the Internet. Many of them

supply discount coupons which you take to the restaurants.

Two very good aspect of Japanese restaurants are the “no

tipping” custom, and waiters and waitresses welcoming you

with smiles and a loud “irassyai mase!”

A man lost a bag containing three ryou (old currency unit)

on a road. The other man who found it brought it to the

address written on the bag. The man who had lost the money

said, “Since I lost the money, it’s not mine anymore” and he

refused to take it back. The man who found the money said,

“This is the money I found, so it’s not mine” and refused to

keep it. The two stubborn men stood their ground and decidedto take their dispute to court.

Judge OOKA Echizen was very impressed to hear about

this and said, while adding one of his own ryou to the other

three ryou and handing the two men two ryou each. “Both of 

you could receive the three ryou, but you received only two

ryou. So you both lost one ryou and I gave away one ryou.

Therefore, Three of us lost one ryou.” This decision settled

the case peacefully.

But the story continues. One ryou was a large amount of 

money at that time. Upon hearing this story, a duo plotted to

imitate this case and try to gain one ryou. Out of the three

ryou Echizen handed one ryou to each. Then, keeping one

ryou for himself, he said, “If the other person received the

three ryou, you would receive none. But each of us received

one ryou, in other words, all three of us gained one ryou.” He

admonished the two greedy men.

Stories reflected wishes of ordinary people

The above story, called “Three people lose one ryou,” is a

work of fiction that was created in later times, but neverthe-

less is a famous story portraying the fair judgments of OOKA

Echizen (1677~1751). Echizen is well known in Japan due tohis reputation as being a highly competent judge, but his real

name was OOKA Tadasuke. Since he became a lord of 

Echizen (present day Fukui prefecture) later, he came to be

generally known as OOKA Echizen.

Disputes are occurring everywhere in the world. One of the

reasons for this is that there are very few mutual or fair media-

tors. From old times, many books regarding Echizen’s

brilliant judgments have been published and some were even

turned into movies and dramatized on TV many times.

However, most of the episodes featured in these movies differ

from historical facts and were created after Echizen died.

It is safe to say that the wishes of ordinary Japanese people

who ask for fairness are loaded into these episodes. The real

Echizen is famous not only for being an excellent judge, but

also for forming citizens’ fire fighting teams, organizing

garbage collections, rescuing poor people, cracking down on

gambling, private prostitution control, setting of proposal

boxes, etc. Even today, fair or warm-hearted judgments are

called “Ooka sabaki” (Ooka judgment).

The first Japanese words foreigners need to learn should begreetings and social terms. The most commonly used greeting

words will be “Ohayou” (Good morning), “Konnichiwa” (good

afternoon), “Konbanwa” (Good evening), “Sayounara” (Good-

bye), etc. The next most commonly used words would be

words “ Arigatou” (Thank you), “ Douitashimashite” (Not at

all), “Sumimasen” (I am sorry), “ Hajimemashite” (How do you

do?), “Yokoso” (You are welcome), and so on.

“ Doumo” is a very convenient word. It is generally used to

emphasize a meaning such as “ Doumo Arigatou” (Thank you

very much), or “ Doumo Sumimasen” (I am very sorry), but it

can be an abbreviation of these words. When you say“ Doumo” as an expression of thankfulness, it means “ Doumo

 Arigatou,” and if you are expressing an apology, it means

“ Doumo Sumimasen.” When you say “Doumo” to a person

who you are meeting for the first time, the person will under-

stand that your words mean “How do you do?”

On the other hand, “Sumimasen” can be either an apology

or an expression of gratitude. When you fail in something and

say “Sumimasen,” it is taken as meaning that you are sorry for

it. When someone is kind to you and you say “Sumimasen,”

then it is taken as meaning that you are thankful. It can also be

used as a request such as “Excuse me.”

It is also recommended that the following words be learned:

“Kirei” (pretty),” Kawaii” (cute), “Subarashii” (wonderful),

“Oishii” (delicious), etc. However, there are many foreigners

who pronounce them incorrectly, ie: “Kirai” (dislike) instead

of “Kirei” (pretty), or “Kowai” (awful) instead of “Kawaii”

(cute). Incorrect pronunciations of certain words can make

people laugh because they take them as a joke. Finally, the

most necessary words for an English-speaking foreigner must

be “ Eigo ga hanaseru hito wa imasenka?” (Is there anyone

who can speak English?)

On the occasion of the start of Hiragana Times’ 21st

year marked by this month’s issue, when I review the

internationalization of Japan, I am perplexed by the

amazing changes taking place. When the first Hiragana Times

was published in 1986, Japan was in the middle of the bubble

economy period and was a giant economic power that seemed

to be outstripping the U.S.A. As a result, the “fever” among

non-Japanese for learning the Japanese language increased.

An equal society existed in Japan at that time, where, in

response to the national awareness survey carried out by the

Prime Minister’s office, more than 90% of Japanese replied

that they belonged to the middle class. This situation was

made possible mainly due to a progressive tax system that

imposed higher taxes on high income earners, and by a fami-

ly-like Japanese management system that introduced lifetime

employment and a seniority system. It was safe to say that

Japan at that time was a country where anyone, regardless of 

ability, was treated equally.

Japan created an equal society, which socialist countries

couldn’t achieve, in a capitalist country. However, it only last-

ed for a short period of time. In the 1990s, the Asian countries

that could supply cheap labor, including China, became more

powerful, while Japanese industries had to move their manu-facturing bases overseas where cheap labor was available. At

the same time, Japan’s bubble economy collapsed and the

country entered a long period of recession.

The Japanese economy was completely integrated into the

global economy and Japanese people realized that their coun-

try’s prosperity alone could not continue. But while Japan’s

economy has now emerged from out of the long dark tunnel

of recession, it was achieved with mass layoffs and companies

abandoning their subcontractors, both of which have never

happened before in the Japanese business world. Japan has

now became an American-style society where the law of the

 jungle rules and the income gap between rich and poor is

becoming wider.

Globalization buries regional cultures

Once, many unique cultures rooted in the nature of the

regions they were located in bloomed all over the world, and

each was original in its own way. For instance, folk costumes.

Japanese used to wear kimono, but nowadays these garments

are rarely worn except at ceremonies. Instead, easy to wear

clothing such as T-shirts and jeans are now commonly worn.

Living standards and the level of democracy around the

world are very different among nations at present. The differ-

western-style democracies, underdevel-

oped countries’ values will be seen as non-

democratic and sometimes demeaning to

their people. On the contrary, from the

confrontation, and to make matters worse,

leaders will often make use of this for

political purposes.

Kyoko and John (US) first met in September 1999 at

the University of Illinois in the USA in the final year

of the MBA program they were both attending. John

says, “My first reaction to her was, ‘Wow, that is the tallest

Japanese girl I have ever seen!’ ” One day in the fall John

overheard Kyoko say she wanted to go skiing. John already

had plans to do just that during winter break with a friend, so

he invited Kyoko to join them. Kyoko said she would invite

some of her classmates, but they all cancelled at the last

minute leaving only Kyoko, John, and his friend to hit the

slopes for 5 days. “At the end of the trip, I realized Kyoko

was a unique and amazing girl,” John recalls.

After returning to their University for the spring term, their

interest in each other quickly grew, however little did they

know at the time that the road ahead of them was not going to

be an easy one. Over the winter break, the pair had been

attending job interviews and had both accepted ‘dream jobs’

— his in the US and hers in Tokyo. “We realized it would be

difficult for any relationship to last under these circum-

stances,” John says, “but Kyoko convinced me to continue.”

So, what did the pair do? Kyoko invited

John to make his first visit to Japan after their graduation in

May of 2000. John accepted and Kyoko and her parents took 

him all over Japan that summer. “At the end of the summer

when it was time for me to return to the US, neither one of us

wanted our relationship to end,” John says. “We decided to

keep our relationship going as best we could.” Their daily

e-mails, weekly phone calls and trips to see each other every

3~4 months stretched their patience and their bank balances

for more than two years. “After that time, we really wanted to

However, fate sometimes works in mys-

terious ways. Around the spring of 2002,the Tech bubble burst in the US and the

company John was working for began

bleeding money until one day the CFO

announced that everyone in his division

would be made redundant. However, not

everything was going wrong. Soon after-

wards, Kyoko came to visit John and he proposed to her.

Kyoko’s response was, “John, I have been ready for a long

time to be your wife.” The couple held wedding ceremonies in

both countries and after John moved to Japan in January 2003

and studied Japanese for a year, he found a position with a

securities trading company in early 2004.

For John, the biggest challenges he has faced have mainly

been coping with the transition from American life in

Colorado, to building his life in Tokyo. “I was raised in a veryrural area in the US, so Tokyo living can be challenging at

times,” he says, “in particular having to get used to the typical

issues of crowds, small housing, high prices, long commutes

and long working hours.”

For Kyoko, the biggest challenge she

has faced was her decision to become Christian. Kyoko was

born and raised in Japan in a typical Japanese family that was

influenced by the Buddhist and Shinto religions. “I was afraid

that I may betray my family if I changed religions,” Kyoko

says, “however, I became determined to accept Jesus because

I saw that John was a strong witness and evidence of 

Christianity.”

that featured a chart showing divorce rates. Divorces among

Japanese have risen since 1990 and are only now beginning to

decrease after peaking in 2002. “They are decreasing, aren’t

me that the words “Another half year” are being spoken secret-

ly among housewives now since the Pension law is scheduled

CHIBANA Kurara is the Japanese representative who

won second place at the 2006 Miss Universe competi-

tion. Her long black hair deeply impressed the

audience. In Japan, women’s eyes are focused on black hair.

The fixation began when Kao Corporation, a major Japanese

consumer products manufacturer, released their new shampoo

“Asience” in October 2003. In the commercial, the model’s

black hair ruffles against a background of music by

SAKAMOTO Ryuichi and the catch phrase “To the hair

Asience is a shampoo created to suit Japanese women, but

the model in the advert is not Japanese. She is popular Chinese

actress ZHANG Ziyi, who acted as the heroine Sayuri in the

movie “Memoirs of a Geisha,” about Japanese geisha. Her

appointment as the model for the commercial was as surprising

as her role in the movie. However, this product, that uses

Oriental natural ingredients and that make hair more supple,

became a big hit in spite of the comparatively high price.

In Japan, camelia oil has been said to be good for hair.

Shiseido Co., Ltd. focused on this fact and started to sell

“TSUBAKI” (Camelia) shampoo in March 2006 to help draw

out the beauty of Japanese women. “Japanese women are

beautiful” is the catch phrase. They used six big-name talents,

in spite of the fact that one alone would have provided enough

impact, and popular pop group “SMAP” sings the commercial

Mr. KAMII Mitsuhiro of 

Saitama prefecture has 120

qualifications. He explains

how he came to be an enthusiast for

qualifications as follows. “In the compa-

ny where I am working, there are many

professionals who specialized in one

field only, but very few people are experts in more than two

fields. That’s why I made up my mind to become a profes-

scope of his specialized fields, and at

present he is knowledgeable about

Financial Affairs and the

management consultant, in which he

had to pass many subjects. “Now I

am making good use of this knowl-

edge in various fields. Except forthose qualifications necessary for my

Hokkaido Food Meister, Nara  Mahoroba Sommelier, WorldHeritage, Edo Culture and History, Chuushingura (Loyal

subordinates), Movies, are becoming available. The organizers

money by selling the study books and charging test fees, and

then raise “professionals” in their fields. Most examinees on

the other hand want to have their knowledge and expertise

examinations is that planning study and patience are the keys

to success. “It is important to start by taking an easy examina-

but staff remodeled the animal display methods so that the

animals’ natural habitats could be seen more dynamically. Now,

Asahiyama Zoo has become the most spotlighted zoo in Japan.
